Thank you for joining Heads Up and for your interest in creating a mentally healthy work environment.

Heads Up provides people, and organisations of all sizes, with free, practical information and resources to create mentally healthy workplaces and respond to mental health issues.

Creating a mentally healthy workplace is everyone’s responsibility – organisational leaders, managers and employees. Everyone has a role to play so that positive change can take place.

But the role of an organisational leader is crucial to achieving the change that’s needed. This includes advocating for improving the mental health of your workplace, the approach you take to your own job, and the day-to-day contact you have with employees.

The case for more mentally healthy workplaces is strong and is detailed here. Mentally healthy workplaces are positive and productive and get the best out of everyone. Organisations that care about good mental health attract and keep good talent because they’re great places to work. The facts are clear: as well as benefiting employees, a mentally healthy workplace is also better for your bottom line.

Over the coming weeks we’ll share thoughts with you on how to address mental health in your workplace. In the meantime, the Heads Up website is a great place to start.

The National Mental Health Commission has created easy-to-use guides to help workplaces support the mental health of their employees during the pandemic.

Content includes detecting signs that someone may need support, how to have conversations about mental health and where to find help if it’s needed. There are tailored guides for sole traders, small businesses and medium to large businesses.

New mental health training resource for small business advisers

Those who work with small business owners tell us they’d like to learn more about mental health, how to detect signs their clients or family members are doing it tough, and how to help.

Together, Xero and Beyond Blue have combined to release a free four-module training package that provides the answers to the questions many have been asking.

Tips for spotting if your work colleague is struggling in a virtual workplace

Without physical face-to-face contact, it can be difficult to assess how your work colleagues are coping with life in a virtual work environment.

Fortunately, there are some things you can look out for and steps you can take if you think they need help.

How women and their work have been impacted by COVID-19

The disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on women in the workplace is the subject of Xero Now, a recent podcast that shares honest and powerful stories about the challenges women have faced.

This episode features Beyond Blue’s Chief Community Officer Patrice O’Brien, Book It Founder Karen Kennedy and Xero’s Amanda Newton and Kate Roberts.

You need to look after your mental health at work too | View in browser

It’s often easy to forget that senior leaders and managers are like any employee in an organisation and subject to the same pressures and stressors – in some instances even greater ones. Managers are sometimes assumed to be able to just ‘rise above it all’ and be more focused on the needs of their staff. This clearly is not realistic.

While much of our working environment is determined by others, individually we can take steps that will help protect and enhance our mental health and wellbeing.

Some key things to support your wellbeing at work are:

Limiting working extra hours
Scheduling meetings during core working hours
Taking regular breaks
Trying not to take work home
Taking your holiday leave
Setting realistic deadlines and delivering on time
Being prepared to sometimes say “No”
Having a technology switch off
Making use of an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) or other workplace support
Exploring flexible working arrangements

Free, mental wellbeing at work training: looking out for yourself and others

We are thrilled to announce the release of a new, free, four-module online learning course designed to improve mental health and wellbeing literacy.

With practical information and guidance, use of common work scenarios, role playing exercises, and links to other resources, the training helps you look out for: your own mental health; those you work with; clients you may be concerned about; and even friends and family members. You may also want to forward the training to other colleagues you think will find it useful.

While the training ‘Mental wellbeing: support yourself and small businesses’ has particular value to those who work with small business owners, it has broader value too.

Subjects covered are:

What influences our mental health and how to pick the signs that something’s not right.
How to maintain healthy habits at work and home.
When you should speak to someone about how they’re going.
The tools that can help you have a constructive conversation with them.
Making mental health and wellbeing a priority in your own business so you can support clients.
Ways to proactively help small business owners enhance their wellbeing.

The modules have been developed specifically for the workplace. Each can be easily completed in 25 minutes.

Whether you have clients, employ people, or just want to improve your own knowledge about workplace mental health, these free modules are a great resource.

Australian Government online portal My Business Health, supported by Beyond Blue, operates on the basis that good business health supports good mental health, and vice versa.

My Business Health gives small and family businesses easy access to tools, templates and tips to manage stress and proactively manage your business.

It’s never been more important to keep an eye out for family, friends and workmates to make sure they’re okay.

However, having a conversation with someone you’re concerned about can be daunting. We have some simple tips on how you can approach it.

Beyond Blue’s Coronavirus Mental Wellbeing Support Service website is regularly updated with information, advice and strategies to help you cope during the pandemic.

There’s a dedicated ‘Impacts on my work’ section and you can also speak with trained counsellors 24/7 to discuss your concerns.

Why your workplace needs to think about mental health | View in browser

Mental health conditions are common and don’t discriminate — even the most resilient person can be affected by stress related to their work, as well as other life challenges.

In fact, one in five Australian employees, at any given time, will be working with a mental health condition, most notably anxiety and depression. And 45% of Australians will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime. So, many of your employees are likely to fit into this category and others are at risk of doing so.

1 in 5 employees are likely to be working with a mental health condition
3 million people experience anxiety and depression every year in Australia
60% of employees are more committed to organisations that are mentally healthy
The mental health of a workplace is the second most important attribute (after pay) for employees choosing a new job
Businesses achieve an average $2.30 return for every dollar spent in effective mental health strategies.

In research commissioned by Beyond Blue, 91% of employees agreed that it is important to work in a mentally healthy environment while only 52% agreed that their workplace was mentally healthy.

And 45% of employees said they’d left a workplace because of a poor mental health environment.

There’s clearly more work to be done to make Australian workplaces mentally healthy.

Importantly, a well-developed strategy will not only help reduce the onset of mental health conditions, it can contribute to employees being even more engaged and productive.

Having a conversation with someone you’re concerned about | View in browser

It’s often helpful and necessary for senior leaders to initiate conversations with employees when there are things about their behaviour that are concerning.

It may be a specific out-of-character action, a prolonged period where the person doesn’t quite seem themselves or things like consistently turning up late for work, missing deadlines or withdrawing from colleagues.

Whatever it is that prompts you to talk with an employee, it’s important to go about it the right way.

This means thinking about how to raise the subject, planning how the conversation should go, ensuring you hone your listening skills and considering some of the possible outcomes and support you think might be available.

How to go about creating a mentally healthy workplace | View in browser

Many Senior Leaders, HR and Health and Wellbeing Managers say to us that they recognise the value of a mentally healthy workplace but they don’t quite know how to go about achieving it.

To help them, we’ve produced two documents.

Developing a workplace mental health strategy: A how-to guide for organisations is a practical, step-by-step guide for organisations to develop and implement a mental health and wellbeing strategy for their staff.

It gives them scope to tailor the approach to their own unique circumstances and leads them through how to do it.

To support the guide, we’ve also developed a short brochure that works through 7 key actions to help create a mentally healthy workplace.
