The Buzz Session will start with a summary of previous discussions around SSNB Family Centered Care, focusing on implementation bottlenecks and opportunities. Following an introductory panel, participants will join virtual breakout rooms, where facilitators will guide discussions and support peers across countries to address challenges and generate potential solutions. Following the breakout conversations, participants will rejoin the main virtual room for a quick summary of discussions.

Breakout room themes include:

Acceptance, motivation and partnership behavioral issues among providers and families
Infection prevention within sick newborn units
Conducive family centered infrastructure in health facilities and within newborn inpatient units for mothers, family members and providers, as well as access to commodities

We hope the Buzz Session, which builds on the momentum created by our inaugural webinar, will allow for a deep dive into challenges and opportunities that countries face around the implementation of family centered, in-patient care for newborns and young infants.

Do no harm

As we mark International Kangaroo Mother Care Awareness Day today, we are reminded of the vulnerability of newborn babies during health crises, as well as the imperative of upholding rights and maintaining hard-won progress in the area of newborn health.

Although there is limited evidence, the current recommendation by the World Health Organization is that infants and mothers with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 should be enabled to remain together and practice skin-to-skin contact, kangaroo care and to remain together. Above all, do no harm.

The experience of delivering a baby has become traumatic in many places. Lessons learned from previous public health emergencies can offer important insight about the potential impact of this pandemic on health systems and care-seeking behaviors, leading to decreases in maternal and newborn care due to disrupted services and fear of seeking treatment during the outbreak. The consequences can revert decades of progress.

Access to quality newborn and maternal care is essential. Let''s not forget it as we celebrate health care professionals, particularly nurses and midwives, and families who are ensuring the health and wellbeing of newborns around the world.

Lives in the balance

The fight to prioritize maternal and newborn health care is becoming more and more urgent as COVID-19 continues to threaten the globe. Newborn health champions across the world are raising their voices, advocating for quality services and, as an imperative, for parents to stay together with their babies.

Family Centered Care for Newborns to improve newborn survival and developmental outcomes

Previously known as the KMC Acceleration Partnership (KAP) Community of Practice (CoP) on Knowledge Gateway, the CoP has expanded its technical reach to cover the Care of the Small and Sick Newborn (SSNB) and is now hosted on the WHO-supported IBP Network platform. Our inaugural webinar will be building on the momentum and expression of interest from participants in the Survive and Thrive report webinars on the Care of Small and Sick Newborns. It will be a facilitated interactive discussion with leading experts aiming to provide more in-depth information on the evolution and definitions around Family Centered Care and experiences in advocacy, policy-making and implementation in a middle-income country, India. The Executive Director of a Ghana parents' association will share her experiences with the group.

Achieving Global Targets for Newborn Health

With the recent launch of the Every Newborn 2025 targets and milestones, we are reminded of hard-won progress, as well as remaining and emerging challenges to ensure that every newborn is cared for and given the opportunity to not only survive, but thrive.

The Every Newborn Action Plan

We are thankful for the immense support and determination of the newborn health champions and experts who joined the SNL Newborn Health Legacy e-Talks. The series was an opportunity to come together, reminisce on the work done over the last two decades and discuss what is needed so that every newborn survive and thrive to achieve their full potential.

Despite progress, too many women and their newborns-including stillborn babies-die every year due to complications in pregnancy, childbirth, and the first 30 days of life. As we move forward, we must ensure that hard-won progress will continue to fuel the journey ahead. We will not waiver and invite you to endorse our Call to Action, renewing the newborn health movement commitment to care for and protect the world''s most vulnerable, aligning efforts for better results.

The IBP network is housed at WHO and works through its many partner organizations to support the dissemination and use of evidence-based guidelines and tools in family planning and reproductive health. We would like to find out more about two groups of tools that IBP promotes: The WHO Guidelines on Family Planning (FP) and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and the High Impact Practices in Family Planning (HIPs). The COVID-19 Infant Feeding Working Group (CIF-WG) implements specific projects to support these four key objectives, such as supporting the development of useful and clear messages targeting improved public health and evidence-informed standards of care for safe and efficacious infant feeding practices in the context of the pandemic. As part of this effort, CIF-WG is conducting a survey to capture breastfeeding beliefs and fears related to COVID-19. Findings will inform a brief to address common beliefs and myths in the space of infant feeding focused on breastfeeding and COVID-19.

With only 10 years left to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), there is an urgent need to accelerate progress toward improved maternal, perinatal and newborn outcomes and ensure women and newborns survive and thrive. As a response to this need, a new initiative AlignMNH: Collective Action for Maternal Newborn Health will nurture a culture of information sharing and priority actions behind which the MNH community can align in the drive toward achieving the SDGs. Shaped by country engagement and priorities, AlignMNH will serve to amplify existing efforts; more rapidly disseminate emerging evidence and science; fuel country-led coordinated advocacy and action; identify, translate and curate learning that is actionable and accessible to guide program implementation; and promote mutual accountability. Do no harm

As we mark International Kangaroo Mother Care Awareness Day, we are reminded of the vulnerability of newborn babies during health crises, as well as the imperative of upholding rights and maintaining hard-won progress in the area of newborn health.

The current recommendation by the World Health Organization is that infants and mothers with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 should be enabled to remain together and practice skin-to-skin contact and kangaroo care. Above all, do no harm.

The experience of delivering a baby has become traumatic in many places. Lessons learned from previous public health emergencies can offer important insight about the potential impact of this pandemic on health systems and care-seeking behaviors, including decreases in maternal and newborn care due to disrupted services and fear of accessing treatment during the outbreak. The consequences can revert decades of progress.

Access to quality newborn and maternal care is essential. Let''s not forget it as we celebrate health care professionals, particularly nurses and midwives, and families who are ensuring the health and wellbeing of newborns around the world.

Family Centered Care for Newborns to improve newborn survival and developmental outcomes

Previously known as the KMC Acceleration Partnership (KAP) Community of Practice (CoP) on Knowledge Gateway, the CoP has expanded its technical reach to cover the Care of the Small and Sick Newborn (SSNB) and is now hosted on the WHO-supported IBP Network platform. Our inaugural webinar will be building on the momentum and expression of interest from participants in the Survive and Thrive report webinars on the Care of Small and Sick Newborns. It will be a facilitated interactive discussion with leading experts aiming to provide more in-depth information on the evolution and definitions around Family Centered Care and experiences in advocacy, policy-making and implementation in a middle-income country, India. The Executive Director of a Ghana parents' association will share her experiences with the group.

The Care of Small and Sick Newborns

June 16th marked the International Day of the African Child. Newborn health champions took to social media to discuss the indirect effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in the continent. The #CovidCollateral rolling live Twitter Q&A addressed barriers that hinder the chances of newborns to survive and thrive.

This ignited a critical reflection on the challenges faced by babies born into crisis. With tools such as the Roadmap to Accelerate Progress for Every Newborn in Humanitarian Settings 2020-2024, practitioners can improve the health of mothers and their babies in emergencies.

The health and safety of the world''s most vulnerable babies, particularly small and sick newborns, should not lessen during crisis, but flourish through research, dedication and determination: with quality, equity and dignity.

We are marking the 20 years of Saving Newborn Lives (SNL) with a series of Newborn Health Legacy e-Talks. The online sessions will cover key newborn health topics, with discussions on the continued importance of newborn and perinatal health in times of crisis.

Please join us Tuesdays and Thursdays from Sep 29 - Oct 15, when experts and global leaders will present the groundbreaking work done in the last two decades by the newborn health movement, while also sharing implementation challenges, learnings and views about the way forward to further strengthen newborn health and survival.

Thank you to all who participated in the introductory webinar "Family Centered Care for Newborns to improve newborn survival and developmental outcomes" of the Care of the Small and Sick Newborn Community of Practice. Please find below the links to the webinar recording and presentations for your files and for colleagues who were not able to participate.

Previously known as the KMC Acceleration Partnership (KAP) Community of Practice (CoP) on Knowledge Gateway, the CoP has expanded its technical reach to cover the Care of the Small and Sick Newborn (SSNB) and is now hosted on the WHO-supported IBP Network platform. Our inaugural webinar will be building on the momentum and expression of interest from participants in the Survive and Thrive report webinars on the Care of Small and Sick Newborns. It will be a facilitated interactive discussion with leading experts aiming to provide more in-depth information on the evolution and definitions around Family Centered Care and experiences in advocacy, policy-making and implementation in a middle-income country, India. The Executive Director of a Ghana parents' association will share her experiences with the group.

Newborn Health Legacy & the Way Forward

The past 20 years have brought many advances in newborn and perinatal health, thanks in great part to the tireless efforts by champions like you. There is unfinished business the global community must attend to if we are to continue moving the needle and avoid losing hard-won progress, particularly in light of COVID-19.

To mark the achievements of the newborn health movement, while also recognizing the many tasks that lay ahead, the Saving Newborn Lives (SNL) program is excited to invite you to join its 20th anniversary Newborn Health Legacy e-Talks. Facilitators discussed major themes around acceptance, infection prevention and conducive family centered infrastructure in health facilities.

WBW was a moment of reflection about the impact of COVID-19 on early and exclusive breastfeeding, an important intervention for newborn health and wellbeing. This section brings resources on how mothers can safely breastfeed their babies and promote a healthier and more sustainable planet.

Researchers are calling on partners to submit examples of networks of care for maternal and perinatal health. The examples will inform recommendations from an ongoing scoping review.

Please join our Buzz Session on 8/11:

Family Centered Care for Newborns: Implementation Challenges and Opportunities

Please register through the link at the bottom by August 10th @ 12pm EDT.

The Buzz Session will start with a summary of previous discussions around SSNB Family Centered Care, focusing on implementation bottlenecks and opportunities. Following an introductory panel, participants will join virtual breakout rooms, where facilitators will guide discussions and support peers across countries to address challenges and generate potential solutions. Following the breakout conversations, participants will rejoin the main virtual room for a quick summary of discussions.

Breakout room themes include:

Acceptance, motivation and partnership behavioral issues among providers and families
Infection prevention within sick newborn units
Conducive family centered infrastructure in health facilities and within newborn inpatient units for mothers, family members and providers, as well as access to commodities

We hope the Buzz Session, which builds on the momentum created by our inaugural webinar, will allow for a deep dive into challenges and opportunities that countries face around the implementation of family centered, in-patient care for newborns and young infants.
