Herman Miller Schedules Second Quarter Fiscal 2021 Conference Call and Webcast

Our research with Boston-based, non-profit architecture firm MASS Design Group is a testament to just how powerful the office can be as a tool for broadcasting purpose and rallying everyone around it.

After MASS worked with Herman Miller to create a vibrant Living Office of its own, the proportion of employees who said they agreed with the organization's values and beliefs increased to 96 percent. And the proportion that agreed they are motivated to do their best work rose to 100 percent.

Now MASS has a place where employees are proud to call home, and they use it as a tool to advocate for the value of design with prospective clients. "One of the first things I do when I meet a potential supporter or client is say, 'Why don't you come to our office and meet our team?'" says MASS co-founder Michael Murphy. "One reason is our ethos here and to see how we organize ourselves. You can meet the incredible team that's doing amazing work."

Three Ways to Nurture Idea Development

1. Welcome people back to the office. The collaboration and creativity that result from face-to-face interaction are at least five times more valuable than the increase in individual productivity spurred by remote work.¹ 

2. Make space for solitude. Individual work is critical to the creative process. When people are alone, they are more likely to experience a mental relaxation period that enhances creative thinking, long-term planning, and self-awareness.² 

3. Be flexible. A hybrid method of brainstorming, where people come up with ideas separately and then get together to discuss them, generates three times more ideas than collaboration alone.³
