The Certificate in Non-acute Care Cleaning (CNACC) Train-the-Trainer program offers front-line cleaning and disinfection workers a thorough educational opportunity on cleaning in the health care environment outside of acute care settings. The program prepares front-line workers to break the chain of infection and contribute to ensuring positive patient outcomes. CNACC includes content specific to the full scopes of non-acute care areas such as outpatient, long-term care and behavioral health facilities, and other situations, such as construction cleaning.

CDC resource seeks to reduce infection control risks from surfaces

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released a new resource on decontamination of surfaces. "Reduce Risks from Surfaces" provides a blueprint to help maintain clean health care environments and minimize the presence of pathogens by adhering to six core components. AHE was a significant contributor to the resource''s development, and its core components pull from a number of the association''s guidance and programs, including the Practice Guidance for Health Care Environmental Cleaning, 3rd Edition, and its Certified Health Care Environmental Services Technician program.

AHE launches COVID-19 response eLearning certificate programs

AHE has developed two eLearning certificate programs in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. AHE will release the Pathways to Clean certificate program in late September. In addition, AHE released the Ready. Set. Clean. certificate program in response to an outpouring of inquiries from the hospitality field looking for the resources necessary to educate and train their front-line staff to achieve hygienically clean and safe guest spaces that contribute to combating COVID-19, and that reaffirm customer confidence. The Pathways to Clean and Ready. Set. Clean. certificate programs will both include webinars, presentations and checklists related to COVID-19, infection prevention strategies, cleaning, disinfection, sanitation, emerging pathogens, and preparedness for biological events.

Researchers test antimicrobial curtains to determine effectiveness

Researchers from the University of Iowa tested the effectiveness of antimicrobial curtains in an intensive care unit at the University of Iowa Hospital & Clinics. The authors published results of the study, ''A randomized control trial evaluating efficacy of antimicrobial impregnated hospital privacy curtains in an intensive care setting,'' in the American Journal of Infection Control. In their assessment, the researchers found no statistically significant difference in the amount of time before pathogenic contamination occurred between antimicrobial impregnated curtains and standard curtains; still, the authors say further study is encouraged.

New environmental services practice guidance coming soon

AHE is working to release the third edition of "Practice Guidance for Health Care Environmental Cleaning, The Essential Resource for Environmental Cleaning and Disinfection." The latest edition will include several new sections and expand further on topics included in previous editions. The practice guidance will help to illustrate the growing relationship that has emerged between infection preventionists and environmental services professionals. Other new content includes sections on emerging pathogens, emergency management, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services requirements, linen management and more. The subscription-based resource will be delivered electronically and in a mobile-friendly format.
