Kudos to all your #HighwaysHeroes and the interesting and diverse range of entries we''ve received to date for this remarkable industry''s Highways Awards scheduled to take place on 13 October at the Royal Lancaster London.

In such challenging times, we have been overwhelmed by the huge response in entries so far, however a number of you have been in touch requesting more submission time. So in order to help you give your teams, schemes, projects and innovations the justice they deserve, we have now extended the FREE online entry deadline to Friday 19th June. Please note, due to the complexity of our renowned and vigorous judging process, we would be unable to accept ANY entries after this new, extended date.

Please take full advantage of this extra time by taking another look at the 15 categories on offer; some you may have missed. Also, download our special Compare & Contrast document below that includes an easy reference synopsis; you may discover a new or additional category you hadn't considered before, as well as offering you some assistance perfecting your entry.

MENTAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING IN THE HIGHWAYS SECTOR

ENTRY CRITERIA
 

NEW for 2020, the Mental Health and Well-Being in the Highways Sector award celebrates employers that take a joined-up approach to supporting employee mental health and wellbeing and strive to embed best practice across their organisation. Entries must demonstrate activities that:
 

• Promote mental health and wellbeing across all levels of the organisation
• Show how senior leaders champion and lead the mental health agenda in their organisation
• Tackle stigma around mental health and create an open culture so that employees feel comfortable disclosing their mental health
• Upskill line managers on how to support the mental health of their staff
• Provide tailored support for individuals that are experiencing poor mental health

NEW Lifetime Achievement Award

• What has been their biggest achievements and how has this benefited the sector?
• Describe the work this person has done as part of a team or any collaboration with other organisations within the sector.
• Describe why this person would be a role model for others in the sector.

MOST INNOVATIVE HIGHWAY AUTHORITY SCHEME OF THE YEAR

Sponsored by Gaist, the Most Innovative Highway Authority Scheme of the Year will be awarded to the highway authority whose approach and innovation has allowed them, within the last two years, to develop a project or scheme that delivers measurable and sustainable benefits to the community and the authority.

1. Detail the approach to the innovative element of the scheme and highlight the areas of best practice.
2. Explain the challenges met and obstacles overcome.
3. What was the impact of the activity on the community locally or at large ?
4. Explain the approach taken to demonstrate the degree of collaborative working and stakeholder engagement.

MAJOR PROJECT AWARD

The Major Project Award is awarded to the team responsible for the successful delivery of a major project - i.e. bridge construction, highway widening, by-pass or junction improvements, establishment of a control centre or similar, taking into consideration time, costs, environmental impact, stakeholder involvement, feedback and user satisfaction. The project value needs to be above ?5 million and should have started two years prior to entering the awards.

• What innovative measures were taken to achieve a particular goal or aim?
• Describe the range of challenges identified and techniques used to overcome then.
• What is the quality and impact of the project on stakeholders, and contribution to the wider community and travelling public?
• Explain the overall environmental impact.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE. No-one can predict how your celebrations may be affected on 13 October - whether they will need to be re-scheduled or simply adapted on the night. We wanted to assure you that, should numbers be restricted, we are exploring ways that other members of your organisations can join us virtually, and table requirements will be adjusted accordingly. We will keep you updated on developments throughout the summer.

NEW Winter Service Project in the Highways Sector

NEW FOR 2020 Awarded to an organisation, highway authority or partnership that is able to demonstrate the most significant improvement in the service, for example improved resilience, reduced cost or lower claims, through the application of NWSRG guidance.
 

• Outline the key improvements that have been made to the winter service
• Provide evidence that demonstrates the tangible improvements that have been achieved, for example operational performance, sustainability, reducing environmental impacts, cost savings, higher customer satisfaction etc. and how this benefits the organisation.
• What were the challenges met in developing the improvements?
• Show how these improvements link with the new guidance.
