24th February 2020
Dear Passengers & Friends,
I am delighted to say that Network Rail have confirmed the transfer of The Shakespeare Express working timetable paths to us. This means we are now able to run trains in these paths any Sunday of the year. So, to celebrate this and the beginning of the new season under our new management, we are running two additional Shakespeare Express trains with Clun Castle on Sunday 5th April. You may book by visiting and selecting the 5th April trains. We look forward to seeing you, either for breakfast/high tea from Birmingham, Sunday lunch from Stratford or simply a ride in either direction. We are giving you advance notice of these special trains before they go on sale to the public, so please don't delay! Of course, if you would like your very own special Shakespeare Express to celebrate a family event we will now be delighted to talk about such opportunities with you!
Clun Castle is confirmed as gauged for her Settle & Carlisle trip on Saturday 18th April. This train is fully booked with a waiting list, which isn't surprising as it was 1967 when 7029 made her last visit to Carlisle! We are planning a second trip in the early autumn, so if you would like to reserve seats pending confirmation, please BOOK HERE.
There are a few seats and 1st Class Compartments remaining on both the Llandudno trip on Saturday 9th May and Minehead trip on Saturday 30th May, but not many. If you would like to book, please BOOK HERE or telephone the Vintage Trains Booking Office on 0121 708 4960 option 1.
We will be running the main season of Shakespeare Express trains on Sundays from Sunday 19th July to Sunday 6th September. Whilst this is a 'walk on' service, if you wish to dine with us for either breakfast/high tea or Sunday lunch pre-booking is essential. You may book here Our restaurant car service is re-introduced for these trains.
We will send you details of additional trains in the year's programme as they are arranged.
This year our open weekend will be held on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th September. Please make a note in your diaries now and we will advise attractions later. We are not holding a June open weekend this year as the major refurbishment of our turntable is currently still in progress and we wish to be sure it is finished before holding open weekends. Thanks to a generous legacy from David Clifford, we have been able to renew and refurbish this interesting and crucial piece of equipment which forms the centerpiece of the 1908 original roundhouse footprint. When completed, the next steps in our depot refurbishment plan will concentrate on tidying up the roundhouse area. We are only able to make strides in our depot improvements by means of generous legacies and donations such as this.
New for this season will be a series of exclusive private invitation only open events where shareholders and passengers will be able to go behind the scenes at Tyseley Locomotive Works and meet trustees to discuss development and day to day plans. Further details will be announced in due course.
We know that many of you enjoy travelling with us in our Pullman Restaurant Cars for a day out or on The Shakespeare Express. So we are introducing a new Pullman Club (details to follow soon!) which will enable covenantors to have priority booking on seats 'of their own' for a year at a time in return for Gift Aided donations which we will use to improve and upgrade our four Pullmans over time, beginning with Pullman Parlour Car No. 99353, currently out of service, but planned to return in the summer. We hope you will join us to mutual benefit.
As a Community Benefit Society, we like to encourage all our shareholders and passengers to join in our activities as a volunteer. Matt Self has set up a registration and induction programme for new and existing volunteers and this can be reached by It would be great to hear from more of you who would like to work with us either with your particular skill set or generally as we can only achieve our vision and objectives with more help. On the two year run up to the 2022 Commonwealth Games there are many opportunities now within our grasp in addition to operating trains and engineering. We have adopted Tyseley station, will shortly annex the GWR staff club and begin planning deeper participation in the heritage developments along the Shakespeare Line, especially now we have our working timetable paths.
Exciting times!
