Free Drawing School Online in July

As summer has crept upon us and we''re able to spend a little more time outside, we''re so excited to announce the next group of artists leading the Free Drawing School in July.

Join the Free Drawing School live online every Monday from 10am-12pm.

A different drawing challenge is announced each week for you to get involved with at home guided live with an artist.

The Free Drawing School Online continues over the summer with many more challenges as we invite guest artists to design the weekly challenge for you to join in with.

The Free Drawing School challenges are designed to be done at home with the resources you can bring together from your drawers and cupboards.

Monday 6 July, 10am-12pm
Drawing Challenge led by Isabel Cordeiro

Isabel Cordeiro is an artist living in Amsterdam. She works across painting, installation and video. In her practice Cordeiro explores the intersubjective relations between us and art works (or the possibility thereof), both from the perspective of the maker and the viewer. Isabel was in residency at Hospitalfield for four months in 2017 as part of a partnership with the Mondriaan Fund.

Drawing Challenge led by Jade Montserrat

Jade Montserrat is an artist based in Scarborough. She is the recipient of the Stuart Hall Foundation Scholarship which supports her PhD (via MPhil) at IBAR, UCLan, and the development of her work from her black diasporic perspective in the North of England. Jade works through performance, drawing, painting, film, installation, sculpture, print and text. Jade came to Hospitalfield in 2017 as part of the Autumn Residency.

Drawing Challenge led by Mandy McIntosh

Mandy McIntosh is an artist based in Glasgow. Mandy studied fashion knitwear at Trent Polytechnic and worked with KENZO in Paris as a studio designer before returning to Glasgow to complete a Masters at Glasgow School of Art and is currently mid way through a PhD. Lots of McIntosh's work is figurative, increasingly sculptural and aimed at the body, a large area is community based, where people's drawings collate into collective artworks. Mandy is the lead artist for the Arbroath 2020 Community Pageant which will happen in 2021.

Drawing Challenge led by Free Drawing School Artist in Residence Kirsty McKeown

Kirsty Mckeown is an artist based in Dundee. She graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone in 2012. Recent projects have focused on the influence of war-time Britain on the changing roles of women at work, with specific reference to four factors: political, physical, industrial and domestic. She works with materials and processes including college, printmaking, analogue photography and altered objects; using found materials and her immediate environment as inspiration.

The Free Drawing School is an annual artist commission awarded to an artist in the DD postcode each year. In August Kirsty will begin as the Artist in Residence for Year Three.

A new opportunity for Scottish art school graduates
Thirty Places: three groups of ten artists

Application Deadline Sunday 31 January 2021, Midnight

Hospitalfield''s Graduate Programme for 2021 is designed to support the next generation of artists. This new expanded programme gives thirty artists, who have graduated in 2019-20, significant artistic and professional development pathways in recognition of this time of uncertainty.

The programme will offer artists a year long association with Hospitalfield. At the heart of the programme is the learning that participants will gain from both the Mentors'' Circle, a 16-day residency at Hospitalfield and from each other. This structured programme will provide the selected artists with a new network and a period of time to focus on the development of their work.

Supported by the William Grant Foundation, Hope Scott Trust and Fleming-Wyfold Art Foundation. We thank Dundee Contemporary Arts for their valuable partnership on the development of the mentoring programme.

Eligibility Artists who have graduated from fine art programmes in Scotland in 2019 or 2020

Places 30 (3 Groups of 10 artists)

Funding Artists will receive a ?600 bursary. This is designed to cover the residency period.

Introduction

Over the last few months Hospitalfield house and estate?has been?very quiet?and we have missed the programmes that we had to postpone or cancel which would have brought so many people to Hospitalfield.?The sound of bird song prevailed until at the beginning of July, the diggers returned, dominating the sounds at Hospitalfield once again as we welcomed the contractors back to site.?This was a great moment to see the capital development progressing again.

We will welcome people to join us online this year for the FIELDWORK International Summer School and to the fields around the house?for?our annual?Beer & Berries?Festival. We are very pleased to be able to announce the programmes for these events below.

As we make plans for the residency programmes at Hospitalfield, which is such an important part of our programme, we are developing a series of Micro-Residencies in September and look ahead to a full year in 2021.

The next twelve to eighteen months will be challenging but we know we will move through this period and emerge changed?for the better and?full of energy.

We are so grateful for the continued good will and support of our all many supporters. We look forward to welcoming you all here at Hospitalfield again very soon.

Appointments:?We are currently in the process of appointing a?Head Gardener

We are also putting out to tender a Design Brief?requesting notes of interest from designers for key elements of new graphic design around the Future Plan for the Garden & Garden Buildings. Deadline for notes of interest is 4 September 2020.

The Free Drawing School,?a programme of drawing inspired by Hospitalfield's historic walled gardens,?has been thriving online with weekly challenges set by artists from all over the world. The challenges have been made into learning resources for anyone to download with demand for these coming from across the UK. There are new challenges being devised by artists in the future. We are very pleased that Dundee-based artist Kirsty McKeown begun her twelve month Free Drawing School residency in August, a little later than anticipated, we look forward to working with her very much.?

?The online Free Drawing School will continue weekly led by Kirsty McKeown until the classes can meet physically. The Free Drawing School Online Challenges with guest artists will become a monthly programme from September. Kirsty's workshops at Hospitalfield will take place outside with appropriate distancing until the weather becomes too chilly.?

Lockdown gave us the opportunity to focus on researching and writing a series entitled?Stories from Hospitalfield. Writing these short pieces which delve into the finer grain history of the 19th and particularly the early and mid 20th?century has been a fascinating process, one that will continue monthly rather than weekly from now on.?A theme that is continually emerging from the research, and that we are very interested to focus more on, is the impact that being educated at Hospitalfield had for artists. It is clear that many artists who studied here under different individuals, went on to become respected educators themselves.?Some were little known artists, others much more influential, all provided the teaching and inspiration for the next generation based on their experience and we are very interested in this generational cycle.

The Hospitalfield Kitchen?has been producing great food as we work with Reach Across and Angus Council to support local people at this difficult time. Takeaway Nights which have funded the free meals have become quite a tradition now with sixty or so people coming to Hospitalfield to collect their dinner each Wednesday. We thank them and look forward to seeing everyone again from the 19 August when we move to a new system - still booking online and collecting from under the arch and beside the clock tower!

In the week beginning 21 September, Nigel Dunnett, who is the designer for the new walled garden at Hospitalfield will be working with us to set out the vast soft planting scheme in the walled garden. We already have a?large number of volunteers who will come and help, some local others coming from quite a distance. For all those who sign up, meals and tools will be provided. Nigel will do a zoom meeting with everyone in mid-September and then guide everyone during that week as we get the plants in. The rest of the planting will follow in November with bushes and trees, including twenty one species of apple tree to be planted in the orchard.

Future Plan

The first phase due to open April 2021

The contractors came back on site in early July and the capital programme is back on track, perhaps a few months later than we had hoped, but we will be open for the season in April 2021. We may have the opportunity for a few events before then using the wonderful new caf?. In the week of the 21^st?September we are inviting all those who wish to volunteer to work alongside Nigel Dunnett and ourselves to get the soft planting and bulbs in the ground.

We have had good news that the Tay Cities Committee have passed our funding bid for ?5.5m however the Tay City Deal must still be finally signed off by Government so we cannot celebrate quite yet. This is progress however and when the bid is finally agreed we can start work on the next phases of the project.

We are launching the two part FIELDWORK International Summer School entitled?Now What??programmed with artists Bik Van der Pol. The programme for 2020 will be hosted online and in 2021 we expect to be back in the green fields of Hospitalfield.

Contributors to the online programme include curators Binna Choi, Galit Eilat, Tessa Giblin, and artists Ashanti Harris and Olivia Plender. In addition, the film?What is Democracy? by film-maker Astra Taylor will be screened.?

We are screening a film by the artist collaboration Myvillages and Company Drinks and look forward to workshops with artist Sneha Solanki.

Scottish Government Guidelines regarding Covid 19 will be followed to make this a safe event for everyone.

Hospitalfield is closing until the end of May 2020

HOSPITALFIELD

Like so many other organisations we are closing until the end of May and, as soon as we can, we will let everyone know about the decisions we make for the summer programme for June, July and beyond.

This of course makes us very sad indeed and we will miss all of those who had planned to be with us this spring and who have had to postpone their visits, to name a few; the students from CalArts Los Angeles and the students from the Royal College in the Hague, the ENGAGE Conference, Chamber Music Scotland, Scottish PEN, City of Glasgow College and Less is More.

We are hosting the first of this year's Interdisciplinary programme but only a very small number of the originally selected group as so many had to postpone as they were travelling quite a distance. Everyone in the May programme has had their residency postponed till 2020 and 2021.

Arbroath Festival 2020+1: The work that we are doing with the Arbroath 2020 Committee in developing the 2020 Arbroath Festival is also on hold and we have postponed the Festival to 2021. We look forward to seeing you here when the time comes.

We have seen amazing progress to the Future Plan Capital Development, The Garden and Garden Buildings, with CHAP construction continuing to operate. We are anticipating a pause to work very soon which does have some serious implications.

We are moving some of the communications with our networks and activity online and we hope they will be useful and interesting:

The Hospitalfield Local Network: We are now using Facebook to create a community online who can help each other. Hospitalfield has a large number of volunteers and friends who live close by and who we know but who may not know one another. We are making a network of communication so that people can support each other in whatever is needed through this period. Although this is an online group, we hope those online, could use this group to support those not using Facebook.

A minute and a quarter: For several years now we have been asking all the artists who come through the residency programme to recommend books and gradually we are building a contemporary library through these recommendations for Hospitalfield''s 21st Century Library. Over the next few weeks we are asking our Alumni Network if they could give a performance to camera, no more than a Minute and a Quarter long. We will then create a space on YouTube that is open and available to all but especially signed posted to our very loyal audiences, many of whom will be confined to quarters for a long time and who will really appreciate these recommendations and enjoy the performances that can be quite straight forward or not!!!

Making recommendations for reading must also include the recommendation that you buy the books, if you possibly can, from independent book stores who will send them by post rather than by courier. Of course this is not always possible.

Let''s Draw Together! with the Free Drawing School: For the final three classes of the Free Drawing School, Laura Darling will lead three online drawing challenges which will be announced each Monday at 10am. We'll announce these on all our social media. Primarily this is for regular attendees to the Free Drawing School but everyone can get involved if they want. Check Facebook and share with those not online.

We look forward to seeing everyone on the other side and hope we can keep in touch and talking through these ideas.

Artist Jann Haworth In Conversation Online
'Alternative Ways of Living - an experience of Hospitalfield'

Part of the Stories from Hospitalfield series which reflects, through the experiences of artists, on 20th century history of Hospitalfield.

We invite you to join us online for a very special In Conversation event with the artist Jann Haworth.

Jann Haworth is an artist who first gained acclaim in the 1960s as part of the Pop Art movement in the UK for her 'soft sculptures'. Haworth came to Hospitalfield three times in the 1970s with her young family and then husband Sir Peter Blake shortly after they had created their most renowned collaborative work the cover of The Beatles' 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Haworth recently had a major retrospective 'Close Up' at Pallant House Gallery earlier in 2020. Based in Salt Lake City Utah, Haworth is currently working on a major mural titled the Utah Women Project depicting 240 women, both historical and contemporary, as part of the centenary celebrations of the ratification of women's voting rights 26 August 1920.

We have had the pleasure of inviting Haworth to share her memories of Hospitalfield and her approaches to art practice with us.

Drawing Challenge led by Aniara Omann

Aniara Omann is an artist who lives and works in Glasgow. Omann''s practice evolves around themes of interconnection, ecology and social fictions. Working across sculpture, writing, video and live performance the work seeks to question and blur the boundaries of individual objects and their projected identities. The work is often produced using methods and materials found in manual special effects and prop making, as well as homemade and biodegradable materials. Omann has presented work in Scotland and internationally and was a resident at Hospitalfield in Autumn 2017.

Drawing Challenge led by Mark Aerial Waller
Mark Aerial Waller is an artist based in London. His work integrates objects, video and live performance. He studied film and video with sculpture at St Martins School of Art. Waller founded the event based project The Wayward Canon in 2001; there is currently a selected retrospective exhibition at CAAM Las Palmas. His films are distributed by LUX, London and he is represented by Rodeo. Mark was part of the Summer Residency at Hospitalfield in 2017.

Drawing Challenge led by Fabiola Carranza
Fabiola Carranza is a Costa Rican / Canadian artist based in Vancouver. She examines visual, cultural, and personal phenomena through art and writing. She obtained an MFA from the University of British Columbia and a BFA from Emily Carr University Vancouver, Canada. She is a PhD student in the Department of Art History, Visual Art, Theory, and Criticism at the University of California in San Diego. Fabiola came to Hospitalfield in 2017 and was part of the Interdisciplinary Residency programme.

Drawing Challenge led by Luke Pell
Luke Pell is an artist based in Edinburgh, Scotland who collaborates with people and places, working across forms to imagine alternative contexts for performance, participation and discourse that might reveal wisdoms for living. Maker, curator, dramaturg and writer. Luke's work has been presented throughout the UK and internationally. Currently an Associate Artist at Dance Base, Edinburgh and with Fevered Sleep, Luke was part of the Interdisciplinary Residency at Hospitalfield in 2018 and was an advisor alongside Janice Parker on the Hospitalfield Children's Procession in 2019 with Mark Bleakley and Katie Miller.

Drawing Challenge led by Rachel Pimm
Rachel Pimm is an artist based in London. Rachel works with sculpture, video and performance to explore environments and their materialities, histories and politics often from the point of view of stuff such as plants, minerals, worms, water, gravity or rubber. They have an MFA from Goldsmiths and were 2019 writer in residence at Whitechapel Gallery. Rachel came to Hospitalfield in 2016 as part of the Summer Residency.

We are issuing timed tickets which are now available to book via our online booking system. Scottish Government Guidelines regarding coronavirus will be followed to make this a safe event for everyone.? If you don''t have access to the internet or the online booking system, you can come along on the day however your entry may take a little longer as we''ll need to take some details for Track and Trace.

Beer & Berries is a great day out for all - an outside event happening in the fields and open spaces around the house. It is the perfect opportunity to celebrate and get to know more about the rich and complex food and drink culture across Angus and Tayside.

Laura Darling has been leading Hospitalfield's Free Drawing School brilliantly for twelve months but now her residency is coming to an end with a new artist taking on the mantle for a further twelve months starting later this year.

Drawing Challenge led by Laura Darling

Laura Darling is a freelance illustrator who lives in Dundee. Her work is guided by noticing and she uses drawing to process complicated or challenging information, creating narratives that can be both accessible and multi-layered. Laura is the Free Drawing School Artist in Residence in 2019-20.

Drawing Challenge led by Mick Peter

Mick Peter is an artist who makes knotty and playful objects, drawings and installations that investigate symbols of power and authority. We are working with Mick on the 2021 Annual Sculpture Commission.

Drawing Challenge led by Sally Hackett

Sally Hackett primarily works with clay to create darkly humorous and honest tableau installations and sculptures. Sally is working with Hospitalfield and Muirfield and Timmergreens Primary Schools in 2021 on the Annual Children''s Graduation Procession.

Monday 4 May, 10am-12pm

Drawing Challenge led by France-Lise McGurn

France-Lise McGurn is an artist who predominantly works with painting to create fluid works that spill from canvas onto walls, floors and ceilings. Her ordered chaos of figures and limbs are deftly painted with the characteristic single lines of her brush. France-Lise created the whole room painting 'Extensa Suite' in the Study Room at Hospitalfield in Summer 2018.

Beer & Berries is the perfect opportunity to celebrate and get to know more about the rich and complex food and drink culture across Angus and Tayside.

It's a great day out for all, come along to buy food & drink from stallholders, sign up for the Spirited Talks, the topics this year explore the shifting demands of labour and consider the alternative economies of production. There will be live music from Rick Redbeard and and DJ sets from The Phantom Band''s Andy Wake and Django Django''s Dave Maclean to complete the festival atmosphere.

Year Three of the Free Drawing School launches in September

Year Three

Artist in Residence: Kirsty McKeown

The Free Drawing School, now in its third year, welcomes artist Kirsty McKeown to take up the 12 month long residency.

The Free Drawing School is a programme of experimental drawing, inspired by Hospitalfield's historic walled gardens, and is an ongoing narrative that runs alongside the development of the new gardens at Hospitalfield.

For the residency Dundee based McKeown will be looking at the social and botanic history of the area surrounding Hospitalfield and of Arbroath itself; taking influence from the migratory lives of the Arbroath fisherwives and the Angus botanist Ursula K. Duncan. She will begin her residency by undertaking a series of walks retracing their steps, using drawing, photography and collecting to create new work around walking, waymakers and paths of resistance.

McKeown will spend the year developing her own work and generating a welcoming workshop environment for participants that will encourage experimentation as they work alongside her, with activities including the creation of drawing tools and cameraless photography. She is interested in gathering an understanding about place through seeing, learning and drawing here in the garden and grounds at Hospitalfield.

Programme

Hospitalfield have invited Rotterdam based artists Bik Van der Pol to work with us to programme the FIELDWORK International Summer School for 2020. The ideas and conversation emerging from this year's summer school will be extended into 2021 when we can hold the School once again at Hospitalfield.

Contributors to the online programme include curators Binna Choi, Galit Eilat, Tessa Giblin, and artists Ashanti Harris and Olivia Plender. In addition, the film What is Democracy? by film-maker Astra Taylor will be screened.

Departing from an object, the Forfar Scold's Bridle, and a document, the Declaration of Arbroath, participants and invited speakers are invited to engage in a collective dialogue, to understand place and bodies as carriers of experience, as archive and scene. We will ask, think and talk through what 'muteness' is at the present time. Considering loss of voice and silence as a political imperative, we propose to rethink this as instigator and potential for alternative learning for the future, and to increase the volume of the stories that must be told.

HOSPITALFIELD

We send this, our first announcement in 2020, and the first of a quarterly newsletter, as we hit the ground running with the initial phase of the capital development. We welcome CHAP construction to the site and look forward to the spring when we will start seeing the transformation take place.

The programme this year will find easy companionship with the construction process -?there is plenty of space for us all to work alongside each other.

We look forward to hosting the residency programmes in this 8th year and to working with the range of partners that have become such a strong contributing aspect of our activity.

This year we will launch out Alumni Network. We host nearly fifty artists each year and, through this Network, we aim to find a useful mechanism to keep in touch with the artists who come through our programmes and who we find that we so easily lose contact with. The Network remains a fledgling idea yet we are working towards making it a useful tool for communication and a way of retaining the working relationships gained through the residencies.

We look forward to seeing you at Hospitalfield and in Arbroath this year.

FUTURE PLAN

The Trust appointed architects Caruso St John in 2014 to develop a master plan for the Future Plan vision. By the end of 2020 the Garden and Garden Buildings will be complete and include; the new garden caf? and restoration of the fernery designed by Caruso St John. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh are advising on a collection of ferns that will tell the story of the 19^th century Fern-Fever. Horticulturalist Nigel Dunnett is leading on the redesign of the garden 'to tell 800 years of garden history'.

ARBROATH 2020

Arbroath is the site of the largest and most powerful medieval Abbey in Scotland. This year sees the 700th anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath, a letter sent by boat to the Pope in 1320. The document seeds the first ideas of democracy and is now regarded as one of the most important documents in Scottish history. The Angus Place Partnership, based at Hospitalfield, is working with the Arbroath 2020 Committee to develop Arbroath 2020 Festival. The first event will be held at Arbroath Abbey on the 4th April: Of Light Breaking is a new choral work commissioned for the Festival from the renowned composer Paul Mealor and sung by 300 voices drawn from choirs across Angus.

RESIDENCIES

After an open call process, we are happy to announce the participants in the 2020 Interdisciplinary Residency Programme at Hospitalfield. This year residents are travelling from across the UK, Australia, Canada, USA, Sweden, The Netherlands, Japan, Brazil and Germany.

Joining the first residency in March will be artist Ana Mazzei who is working with Glasgow International on a new commission and practitioners working on a new exhibition Dundee Contemporary Arts. These partnerships are critical to the annual programme as we host seven programmes that are structured to support artists in a number of different ways.
