First of all, it is with great pleasure that the PALCOM Officers (Tom Johnson, Antje Schwalb and myself) as well as our esteemed members of the Advisory Board wish you a happy new year and the best of luck and success for all your exciting scientific endeavours in 2020!

You will find associated to the email, the latest issue of Quaternary Perspectives, the INQUA newsletter. The issue summarises last year�s activities, as well as all the changes that impacted the Executive Committee of INQUA for the new inter-congress period (2019-2023).

I also attached a letter from Tom Johnson, President of PALCOM. We are delighted to have already received three proposals for IFGs and and Projects since we started our term last summer. But we need more from you! If you have a project related the the activities of the commission that needs some extra funding, please consider PALCOM. We are here to support your research.

The organizing committee of PASES2020 is closely monitoring the situation with travel bans and continued concern due to the COVID-19 outbreak and spread. At this stage, we encourage you to submit your abstract for the workshop but we recognize the workshop's timeline is subject to change. Should the workshop be cancelled or you are not able to travel, you will receive full registration refund.

Past Socio-Environmental Systems (PASES2020)

The workshop will consist of both contributions by early-career researchers (ECRs) and practical breakout groups in which participants will work on community-driven questions around the application of paleosciences to study socio-environmental systems. We welcome ECRs researching the social side of paleosciences with strong interests on paleoclimate and paleoecological data and models. All the details in the attached circular.

Dear PALCOM members,

I want to take this opportunity to bring you up to date on PALCOM activities this year and to encourage you to consider submitting proposals for Project funding in 2021.

Activities: PALCOM is currently supporting one International Focus Group, "Terminations 5 - 0" (T 5-0) and two Projects, "Glacial Terminations: Processes and Feedbacks" and "Carbon in Peat on Earth Through Time: Tropical Peatland Processes and Ecosystem Services." The Terminations IFG and Project had a workshop scheduled for this month in Cassis, France, but it has now been delayed until September 21-23, 2021 due to COVID-19. However they have now scheduled a virtual workshop, supported by PAGES QUIGS and INQUA PALCOM, to take place in two, 2-hour sessions on November 10 and 12. Look for more information in October regarding (free) registration and access to the meeting. Contact Laurie Menviel at l.menviel@unsw.edu.au for more information. A tropical peat workshop that had been scheduled for May 2020 in Bangkok, Thailand was also canceled due to COVID-19, and it has been re-scheduled for some time in 2021. You may contact Sakonvan Chawchai at Sakonvan.C@chula.ac.th for further information.

Call for Proposals: I encourage members of PALCOM to consider submitting proposals for INQUA funding in 2021 for Projects that you may have in mind. I remind you that INQUA has changed its policy regarding Projects, in that they need not be part of an IFG - that is, they can be for any paleoclimate topic, typically for travel support to workshops or skill development workshops. I particularly encourage proposals from our members in developing countries. And now that we are becoming experts in virtual meetings and workshops, proposals for such activities can be submitted as well. When considering submission of a proposal, please check out the proposal guidelines at INQUA.org especially regarding the categories that qualify for funding. While proposals for new IFGs will also be considered, our funds are limited and PALCOM is committed to funding T5-0 through this inter-Congress period. The proposal deadline is listed as October 15, but given the nature of this COVID year, contact me if you have intentions to submit, but find the mid-October date difficult to meet.
