After graduating from the IslandWood Graduate Program, our students are uniquely prepared to choose between a variety of options for their next step. Read on to explore the paths that three alumni took after earning their IslandWood graduate certificate.

Putting Your IslandWood Graduate Education

Within Reach

We are committed to making graduate-level education accessible. Explore the ways we can help make an IslandWood education possible for you:

Monthly Stipend

IslandWood offers a graduate program stipend of $500 per month to all enrolled students to help cover basic living expenses. The stipend can be spent by graduate students in any way they choose and is intended to help our students focus as much as possible on their learning and less on how to cover basic living expenses.

Scholarships

IslandWood offers scholarships for candidates demonstrating financial need, or candidates from underrepresented communities in the education field. Students may also contact the?University of Washington?for more information on?grants and scholarship?opportunities for graduate students.

Fellowship

IslandWood is a proud partner of the YMCA GOLD/BOLD Dudley Edmondson Fellowship. This 15-month graduate degree fellowship provides adults of color with the opportunity to lead outdoor expeditions with low-income youth as a?YMCA GOLD or BOLD?instructor during two consecutive summers while completing the IslandWood-UW M.Ed program.

Service Awards

To make graduate-level education more accessible, we offer service awards to students affiliated (members, alumni, interns, staff, etc.) with service corps, military, and partner organizations, as well as teachers and paraprofessionals.

Loans

Once accepted and enrolled in the UW Master's in Education degree program?as a?matriculated student you are eligible for federal financial aid.

Work Opportunities

Paid?on-campus work opportunities?are available at IslandWood in various departments for all graduate students, regardless of financial need. We can also help connect graduate students to?off-campus work opportunities?on Bainbridge Island.?

We're here to help! Here are the steps to making your application process as simple as possible

Ready to Apply to the IslandWood Graduate Program?

We're here to help! The steps and guidelines below will help make your application process as simple as possible. Remember that all steps of your application must be received by the desired priority deadline (November 30, January 6, March 15) in order for you to receive the respective tuition discount ($750, $500, $250).

Both the IslandWood and the UW-COE M.Ed. degree application can be completed concurrently. Letters of reference and transcripts must be submitted for both applications, which are processed through separate systems. Therefore, requesting these items at the same time may be more convenient for you.

3 Steps to Apply

We're here to help every step of the way. Please reach out to Kathie Bradford at kathieb@islandwood.org with any questions.

Step 1: Apply to IslandWood

We accept applications year-round. Decisions cannot be made until all application materials have been received. Students are generally notified of their admission status within 4-6 weeks following receipt of their application.

Step 2: Apply to the University of Washington's Master's in Education Program

When completing the UW online application:

.	Select either the "M.Ed.-Curriculum and Instruction-Science Education (IslandWood)"- OR -"M.Ed.-Curriculum and Instruction-Teaching & Curriculum (IslandWood)." Applicants interested in the UW Master's in Teaching (MiT) degree must start out as an M.Ed. student.
.	Apply as a?matriculated?graduate student. Matriculation status means you intend to eventually earn a Master's degree, can have up to 31 credits transferred towards the UW M.Ed. degree, and are eligible for federal student loans.

Step 3: Apply for Financial Aid

We are committed to making graduate-level education accessible, and offer scholarships, service awards, and tuition discounts to applicants.

Make sure you're set up for success by making sure you meet these requirements.

IslandWood's Admissions Requirements:?

An undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university (minimum 3.0 grade-point average preferred).
Demonstrated interest or experience in culturally responsive teaching, environment and social justice issues, experiential education, and working with you.

Additional UW Admissions Requirements:

The GRE is required for the UW application for matriculation and scores must be reported to the UW by their January 4, May 1, or July 1 deadlines. Late applications will be reviewed on a space available basis.

Friends,

My heart is breaking. I don't have wonderful words for you, but I wanted to speak from my heart.

These past few weeks, I have been taking the time to share links to stories about the injustices we're seeing, ways of sense-making through art, and finding joy as an act of resistance.

Standing in solidarity from isolation is hard. I am trying to balance my health with my desire to be active, to speak truth to power, and to show up for my community. I have been checking in with my community, offering money and other material supports, and taking stock of my skills.

In the IslandWood Graduate Program, we believe that intentional, individualized mentoring plays a key role in supporting our graduate students in becoming exceptional educators for a more equitable and sustainable world.

Weekly sessions with a faculty or staff member allow grads the space to thoughtfully talk through individual strengths and challenges, gain confidence in their skills, and share insights and ideas.

D?ana Scipio, Ph.D. | Director of Campus Education

An IslandWood alum herself, D?ana has experience as both mentor and mentee. She is passionate about broadening participation in STEM for learners from non-dominant communities, and cultivating the tight-knit, practice-oriented learning environment that sets IslandWood apart. John Haskin, Ph.D. | Senior Vice President for Education

For John, supporting the development of new educators is the most important aspect of his work. He strives to cultivate an environment where students feel safe taking risks, being vulnerable, sharing their struggles, asking for help, and learning from mistakes. Ray Cramer, M.S., ED, NREMT | Senior Faculty for the IslandWood Graduate Program Teaching Practicum
