My name is Andrew Wyant and I am the President of the ISSA. I wanted to drop you a more personal note to thank you for checking out our “Myth Busters” about what life is really like as a personal trainer.
Here are fitness facts and fictions:
MYTH #1: Muscle weighs more than fat
Reality: A pound of muscle and a pound of fat weigh the same - a pound! However, muscles are denser than fat and occupy less space. Adding muscle will create curves where you want them.
MYTH #2: I can turn my fat into muscles
Reality: Fat and muscle are completely different tissues, so you can’t transform one into the other. Although muscles can’t physically turn into fat, they can atrophy. When you start exercising, your goal should be to burn fat and build muscle.
MYTH #3: You can lose fat from specific parts of your body by exercising those spots
Reality: There are no shortcuts to fat loss. Schemes to just target one spot just don’t work. If you do full-body strength training and cardio workouts, the excess fat will eventually come off from the places where you want it gone.
MYTH #4: If I’m not sore the next day, I didn’t work out hard enough
Reality: Soreness does not tell you it was a good (or bad) workout. It’s normal to experience some soreness after a vigorous workout. Soreness can also be a sign that you pushed your body too hard and it can be a sign that you are progressing. Either way it isn’t something to be ignored.
MYTH #5: Walking won’t help me lose weight
Reality: Weight loss is all about energy balance. If you expend more energy than you consume you will lose weight. Walking can absolutely help you lose weight, assuming you walk enough and expend enough energy beyond what you are consuming.
