Rethinking Waste: Thank You!

Wind Turbines, the Circular Economy and the Issue of Composites

ISWA President Antonis Mavropoulos called attention to the problem of wind turbine blades on his blog back in 2017. He stated then that around 43 million tons of blade waste was expected to be generated worldwide by 2050 as wind energy parks decommission older equipment, out of which China would have to manage 40 percent, Europe 25, the United States 16 and the rest of the world 19 percent. Considering that the main options available now for dealing with wind turbine waste are landfilling and incineration, the promise of green wind energy certainly seems to have developed a big blind spot...

Closing Dumpites: New Report!

A Solid Waste Emissions Estimation Tool (SWEET) published by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) was used to investigate waste sector emissions of short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) and other greenhouse gases (GHGs) from Tyre Caza in southern Lebanon, under multiple waste management scenarios. Publications on waste management in Lebanon, including an Integrated Waste Management Plan (IWMP) for Tyre Caza and Updated Master Plan for the closure and rehabilitation of uncontrolled dumpsites throughout Lebanon, provided data that were used in this study along with updated information provided by Lebanon's Office of the Minister of State for Administrative Reform (OMSAR).

Updates Waste Management & Research

This September, WM&R held its first webinar, presenting the latest research from the September ISWA Special Issue. Four speakers, Arne Ragossnig, Alex Pereira, Luciano Villalba, and Dao Sun Lee presented their research. The webinar and more information about the papers presented can be found here. If you would like to read the Special Issue, the issue is open access until mid-October and can be read here.

Waste Management & Research Awards

Every September, Waste Management & Research (WM&R) announces its annual awards to recognize outstanding contributions by authors and reviewers. We are proud to announce the winners for this year's WM&R Awards.

The WM&R Best Paper Award has been awarded to Mustafa Ali, Wenping Wang, Nawaz Chaudhry, and Yong Geng for their article Hospital Waste Management in Developing Countries: A Mini Review. The Best Paper Award recognizes influential papers based on quality of research and citations.

The winners of the Rising Star Award are Mohanakrishnan Logan and Chettiyappan Visvanathan for their paper Management Strategies for Anaerobic Digestate of Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste: Current Status and Future Prospects. The Rising Star Award is an annual award recognizing papers with strong early citation performance.

The journal also would like to recognize the contributions made by its reviewers. The winners of the Best Reviewer Award are Evangelia Vouvoudi and Abhishek Awasthi,. We would also like to recognise two Top Reviewers as runners-ups who made an important contribution, Andr? Nagalli and Gozde Duman Tac.

WM&R also recognises five Top Cited Papers each year, highlighting the runners-up to the Best Paper Award. This year's Top Cited Papers are:

Maja Rujnic-Sokele and Ana Pilipovic for their paper, Challenges and Opportunities of Biodegradable Plastics: A Mini Review.
Conghao Sun, Liping Xu, Xiangping Chen, Tianyun Qiu, and Tao Zhou for their paper, Sustainable Recovery of Valuable Metals from Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries using DL-Malic Acid: Leaching and Kinetics Aspect.
Raquel Greice de Souza Marotta Alfaia, Alyne Moraes Costa, and Juacyara Carbonelli Campos for their paper, Municipal Solid Waste in Brazil: A Review.
Fauziah Shahul Hamid, Mehran Sanam Bhatti, Norkhairiyah Anuar, Norkhairah Anuar, Priya Mohan, and Agamuthu Pariatamby for their paper, Worldwide Distribution and Abundance of Microplastic: How Dire is the Situation?

Confirm the sender's identity before replying to any emails, clicking any links from ISWA officials, even if they appear to come from a legitimate source. Your email client will alert you if the identity of the sender has not been verified. In outlook specifically, you can see if the sender reported is the same as the actual sender (in the case of such phishing emails, likely not). Check here for more information on how to verify the identity of an email.
Alert your IT department to any phishing attempts.
If you have any communication you consider suspicious, you can always call/email us at ISWA to directly to validate this.

ISWA General Assembly 2020

Dear ISWA Members,

On Sunday 27^th September 2020, ISWA?s Governing Body, which is made up of our 48 National Members, met online for the Annual General Assembly meeting.

I would like to give you a brief roundup of the decisions made, some of which were made by email in advance and simply recognised during the online meeting.

Upcoming World Congress Hosts:
In light of recent changes, a new host was sought for the 2021 World Congress. After an extensive call and review, the GA approved Athens, Greece as the host of ISWA 2021. Furthermore, Cape Town, South Africa was selected as the host for ISWA 2024; the first ISWA Congress to be held in Africa.

To summarise, the upcoming ISWA World Congresses are as follows:

2021, Athens, Greece: 4-7 October 2021
2022, Jaipur, India: 10-12 October 2022
2023, Muscat, Oman: tbc
2024, Cape Town, South Africa: tbc

Approval of financial result 2019 and Audit Reports:
The results of the financial result 2019 were approved by the General Assembly. The financial result 2019 (actuals) is positive overall and close to that budgeted. This positive economic performance was achieved despite the uncertainties due to the relocation to Rotterdam, start-up of ISWA in the Netherlands and building a new team with the new Managing Director. Most importantly, ISWA has succeeded in clearing the negative equity resulting from the losses built up between 2016 and 2018.

Approval of Budget 2021:
A conservative Budget with ambitious targets? for additional income was approved for 2021 by the General Assembly. Whilst the budget is conservative, additional funds will be directed towards membership engagement and providing you with better services.

Elections:
Four elections took place during the meeting, with two further elections having already taken place in advance online. The following were elected to the ISWA Board:

President: Carlos Silva Filho, Brazil (elected)
Vice President: Arne Ragossnig, Austria (elected)
Treasurer: Nancy Strand, Norway (elected)
National Member Representative: Ana Loureiro, Portugal (elected)
Organisation Member Representative: Gunilla Carlsson, Sweden (recognised)
RDN Asia Pacific Representative: Melissa Tan, Singapore (recognised)

They join the rest of the board, which is made up of the following:

STC Chair: Bjorn Appelqvist, Sweden
RDN Latin America Representative: Atilio Savino, Argentina
RDN Southeast Europe Representative: Goran Vujic, Serbia
National Member Representative: Doron Sapir, Israel
Organisation Member Representative: James Law, USA

Recognition of New National Members:
Two new National Members were formally recognised by the General Assembly. Both new National Members are in regions where ISWA is seeing a lot of growth and where we are establishing Regional Chapters

Liberia: Liberian Solid Waste Management Association
Mexico: DS Latinomericana

ISWA?s 50^th Birthday Celebration:
Antonis Mavropoulos gave a few words to mark the 50^th Anniversary of ISWA. Many of you already joined our birthday celebrations in September, but for those of you who missed it, we are delighted to share a video with contributions from many of our members wishing ISWA Happy Birthday in their local language.

Approval of New Proposed Honorary Members:
Two new honorary members of ISWA were approved:

J?rgen Haukohl, Denmark.
J?rgen has been a member of ISWA for over 30 years, having served on the Board, STC, and actively contributing to ISWA?s Working Group on Energy Recovery for many years since its inception. The General Assembly recognised J?rgen`s dedication to ISWA over the years.
Antonis Mavropoulos, Greece.
Antonis served as ISWA President between 2016 and 2020 and the General Assembly recognised the incredible efforts and achievements of that time with his Honorary Membership. I would like to share the final President Report of Antonis Mavropoulos with all members. It reflects on our success and achievements over the last four years. Thank you, Antonis!

Member Questions / Input:
Some members sent in some questions and proposals to be considered. This included:

Lebanon - proposals on NM Assistance Funds, Securing projects for ISWA, as well as a question on the efforts to recruit new National Members: See here for more the questions and ISWA`s responses.
Netherlands/Norway - proposals on reviewing policies for board nominations and term limits, as well as a stronger position for the YPG.

All of these have been included in the agenda and will be considered a priority for the newly elected ISWA Board.

The next General Assembly is scheduled to take place on Sunday 2^nd October 2021 in Athens, Greece. However, if you have any concerns or questions that you wish raised by the Board or General Assembly, please do get in touch with myself or your board representative right away.

What is the develoPPP.de Programme?

DeveloPPP.de was set up by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to foster the involvement of the private sector in areas where business opportunities and development policy initiatives overlap. To this end, BMZ offers financial and technical support for companies that invest in developing and emerging-market countries. The company is responsible for covering at least half of the overall costs. In all cases, companies work with one of the two public partners commissioned by BMZ to implement the programme on its behalf: DEG - Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH and Deutsche Gesellschaft f?r Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

ISWA Beacon Conference Asia | Waste Management: The New Norm
7-8 December 2020

While many things have slowed down during this pandemic, waste generation is still on the rise. This is particularly true in low-and-middle income countries, at least in part due to the rise in e-commerce activities, takeaway packages and food waste.

How should we adapt to these changes in terms of collection and disposal? Is the current form of managing waste sustainable? How should we implement successful solutions in our own backyard? Will modern technologies help with efficiency in this time of crisis?

During this first online ISWA Beacon Conference "Waste Management, the New Norm", we dive into two topics, namely digitalizing the waste sector and Waste to Energy moving forward.

Engineering X: Burning of Waste Workshop 1

The open burning of waste takes place worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where there is a lack of waste management infrastructure. The evidence around the prevalence of this issue and its harmful effects are poor.

The Engineering X Safer End of Engineered Life programme seeks to raise this issue on the global agenda, beginning by convening a free, multi-disciplinary workshop of diverse stakeholders.

This invitation only interactive workshop will be led by Dr Mansoor Ali and Dr Terry Tudor, and delivered in partnership with ISWA.

ISWA invites you to join the first online ISWA Beacon Conference "Waste Management, the New Norm", which will dive into two topics, namely digitalising the waste sector and Waste-to-Energy moving forward.

The year 2020 had looked like a promising year for growth in the waste industry all around the world. However, due to the ongoing pandemic, every industry has been put to a halt and a new norm is emerging. Though most industries have slowed down, waste generation is still on the rise especially in low-and-middle income countries, in part due to the rise in e-commerce activities, takeaway packages and food waste.

How should we adapt to these changes in terms of collection and disposal? Is the current form of managing waste sustainable? How should we implement successful solutions in our own backyard? Will modern technologies help with efficiency in this time of crisis?

Dear ISWA Member,

We''re delighted to invite you to an ISWA members-only webinar, September 2nd at 14:00 cest: Europe on the Way to a Circular Economy - Update on the Latest Developments.

The speakers will give an overview about the current status of the waste and resource legislation within the EU and their Member States (especially about the WFD, LD and PPWD 2018, SUPD 2019 and their respective implementing acts and guidelines and their respective national transposition) as well as the Green Deal and the second Circular Economy Action Plan just presented and discussed in Brussels.

Additionally, the webinar will present critical issues in the Hazardous Waste and Healthcare Waste domain that need to be addressed in order to meet the environmental and safety criteria required to allow closing more loops in the context of circular economy. While highlighting these special issues, the audience will get valuable insights and hopefully open a discussion on how to best transform environmental mandates and regulation into practices in specific waste management domains and vice versa.

Attendees will learn not only about the status but about the challenges to achieve a circular economy including the effects to the waste management respective resource management sector.

The content of this webinar targets all stakeholders of the sector as all of them will have to deal with the national and international consequences of these new legislations.

Dear ISWA Family,

2020 has been very challenging, full of surprises, changes and adaptations. However it's been a year for learning new subjects, discovering personal talents and recognizing people and professions who are important to us.

Waste workers are on the front line everyday, come rain or shine. And many of them risked their lives to keep us safe during the Pandemic. We are part of a non-stop industry acting towards a sustainable future for all.

ISWA and its members represent this key industry, to whom I'd like to express my appreciation and gratitude - you are the ones who helped us get through the year, giving us reasons to move forward.

We will continue the tireless and essential work in 2021, aiming at being together in person again.
