I used to commute every day from Washington to Delaware. It’s a 250-mile round trip commute.

Like many of you, I liked to look out that window as I passed through big cities like Baltimore and smaller towns, like Newark, Delaware. And when it was 9:30 pm on my way home, all you could see was light coming from the houses along the route.

I often wondered what they were saying at the kitchen table. My guess is they were -- and still are -- talking about the same things that Americans all across the country are. They’re asking, “are we going to be okay?”

What they’re looking for is not a policy prescription. They just want to know their leaders are looking out for them -- making sure they get a fair shot. Not a guarantee. Just a fair shot to get ahead.

And with Donald Trump in office, they don’t have that. Look around. Most of us are worse off now than we were before.

I’m running for president to fix that. And whether you started this with me eleven years ago or are reading an email for the first time, each of us is bound by a common cause: seeking a better future for our country.

I’m going to tell you something most campaigns wouldn’t admit.

The truth is, over 99% of people who are sent this email won’t donate. And on a typical day, 80% won’t even open it. They’ll look the other way.

But that less than 1% who do open, read, and donate to an email, well it’s enough to power a national campaign for another day. I know that’s surprising, but it’s true.
