When you earn something, it’s often the safest way to get what you want. Something received free of charge is seldom valued.

Often, when people don’t pay, they don’t pay attention. It reminds me of the saying, “Don’t handicap your kids by making their life too easy.” This doesn’t apply to only kids, but to anyone asking for money or help.

There are movements around the idea of ‘funding Entrepreneurs.’ Yet, the struggle and hard work... the trying to figure it out... being broke and trying to be resourceful to earn… THAT is what builds character and long-term success.

It could be noble to want to throw money at something to try and force it to be successful. But the question is whether that is the best long-term decision.

Remember: It’s hunger, not handouts, that causes people to find resourcefulness within themselves.

About 10 years ago I was talking with Gary Chapman, the author of The 5 Love Languages, and he told me: “If you want to know what someone’s Love Language is, listen to what they complain about.” The reason people complain is because they are crying out.

Now, some people just like to complain, but there are certain complaints that hold the seeds of something great.

Think about this:

If a customer complains to your company, on some level they think you can do something about it. When we buy something, hire a service, etc., and it doesn’t work, or they provide poor quality service, etc. – we either don’t complain because we feel it would be more of a waste of our time to try and fix it… or we complain to try and solve the issue. No one complains if they don’t think the person or company could have the capability of doing something about it.

Yes, some people just want to vent. However, complaints often hold the seeds of something greater.

Think of all the things that irk you and make it one of your goals to eliminate all the stuff that drives you crazy, or delegate it and hand it off to someone else. Or learn to love it. Life is too short to be dealing with stuff you just can’t stand.

I spend about half of my time helping people who struggle with addictions.

When I was 18 years old I was in my worst state weighing 105 pounds, freebasing cocaine for 3 ½ months straight. I also took LSD probably 75 times before I was 18 years old. I snorted crystal meth too. And more… it was pretty bad.

This all stemmed from trauma. Your trauma is your trauma, no matter how severe or mild it is.

A lot of high level Entrepreneurs have taken their pain and turned it into productivity.

But, with all their success comes a lot of pain.

When I joined a high profile group... with famous athletes, movie stars, politicians, musicians, and world famous people... people that couldn’t go into rooms anonymously without being identified... I saw how some of the most admired human beings in the world live with some of the most incredible pain.

With all your success, achievement and influence, think about this...
You’re As Sick As Your Secrets.

A lot of pain, if not addressed, if kept internalized, will come out in weird ways.

One of my goals with addiction is to change the global conversation about how people view and treat addicts... with compassion instead of judgement... and to find the best forms of treatment that have efficacy and share those with the world. This is the mission of our Genius Recovery Foundation.

Today, addiction is at an all time high. We have a “war on drugs,” but a war on drugs is like a war on addicts. Addiction is the modern form of human slavery. We are throwing traumatized people in cages thinking we can “PUNISH THE PAIN” out of people.

As an Entrepreneur, think how much you drive yourself. Think how hard you are on yourself. A lot of success comes out of this – and that’s admirable. Workaholism is the respectable addiction. Yet, when you have these shameful things inside you... without addressing, talking about them or asking for help, it will mess you up… and everyone around you.

A lot of Entrepreneurs are looking for love in all the wrong places.

So, what’s one simple thing you could do?

Well, when was the last time you had a "Super-Happy Fun Day?" My friend Dean Jackson came up with the term Super-Happy Fun Day to describe a whole day where you do fun things all day. If you were a little kid and you could come up with your dream day, what would a Super-Happy Fun Day be for you?

I encourage you to schedule and plan a Super-Happy Fun Day.

Or get a massage every day for the next month.

Or take a yoga class.

Or do all three.

The fact is, if you don’t manage modern life, it will manage you.

Take a look at your addictions. Look at the areas of your life that are unmanageable and ask for help.

And remember... focus on creating an E.L.F. (Easy, Lucrative/Liberating, and Fun) life for yourself.

When you first start out in business, you’re everything. You’re making the phone calls. You’re scheduling appointments. You’re buying the materials. You’re doing the database stuff. You’re going to the bank. You’re trying to get financing. And, so on. You’re also doing a bunch of things you suck at… but they have to get done.

Then - if you’re a capable person- you start to figure things out. But, there’s a part of you that is still that person that had to do everything. It’s hard to let that stuff go. Yet, if you don’t, you limit yourself.

There are two ways to leverage yourself in business. One is through marketing that replicates you. The second is by hiring people.

Whatever you suck at, someone loves doing what you hate. There’s no bad work in the world. The world is full of wonderful work. It could just be bad work for you or certain people.

Get clear on what your expertise is. Get clear on what your ‘stupid human tricks’ are.

In business, 20% of the stuff you do, no one is going to do it like you. But, 80% of the stuff you do, you can hire someone to do it.

The key is to be clear about what your 20% is and hone your skills.

Who are you?

What do you stand for?

What’s your value system?

You need to build that into your company, communicate it to the people you hire, and embody it by culture you have. Your business is the ultimate expression of your value system. Take what you believe in and care about, and turn it into a game that feeds you.

Gary Halbert was one of the greatest copywriters who ever lived. He was a good friend during one of the most difficult times in my life over 20 years ago. He would tell me:

“Some games in life, the only way you win is you don’t play.”

Pick the games you’re playing right now that you’re never going to win or that you don’t like. Get out of those games completely, or let someone else manage them.

As Dan Sullivan says, “You don’t want to be in control, you just want to be in charge.” If you don’t get other people who have the capabilities and skills you don’t have, you won’t grow effectively.

Do you know where the vast majority of the money we make comes from?

Bad news.

If you're hungry, that's bad news. If you own a restaurant, it's good news.

If you break your leg, that's bad news. If you're a doctor, it's good news.

If a loved one dies, that's bad news. If you're in the mortuary business, it's good news.

Imagine if there weren't people who helped in these jobs when bad things happen...

Think about taking out the trash. You have to get it out of your house and take it outside where someone can pick it up. So many people hate taking out the trash because it sucks.

Consider this:

There are third world countries where people would LOVE to have someone come pick up their trash if all they needed to do was take it outside.

You should be thankful you have someone pick up your trash.

Listen, I may sometimes complain about things when they don't go exactly as planned. But the point is, I'm training myself more and more to think about the good things in life. What a luxury it is that people will come and pick up my trash. That's amazing. It really is.

What small or big thing could you be thankful for in your life right now if you wanted to be?

We get so hung up on how difficult life is... but it often pales in comparison when you look at some places people live in the world and the pain and suffering they have to go through.

If you have something that will transform someone's bad news into good news, and you can reduce human suffering, you better be influential and tell as good a story as you can so they can pay you for that transformation... and... you will be making people happy.

There’s a lady I interviewed many years ago, named Terri Lonier, who wrote a book called “Working Solo.” In my interview with her she said: “If you had a million dollar racehorse, what would the job of that racehorse be?...”

Well, it would be to win races! If every time the horse won it made you a million dollars, how would you treat that horse?...

You wouldn’t shove fast food down its throat. You wouldn’t run it into the ground. You would let it get rest. You would make sure it got proper exercise. You would make sure it got proper sleep. You would treat that horse in an exemplary way to make sure it won those million dollar races.

Now, Think About Your Company, Your Business and Your Life:

YOU Are The Million Dollar Racehorse.

You Deserve To Treat Yourself With Excellence.

If you’re the head of your company, the fish rots from the head down. I’m not saying that if you go backstage into many companies that they aren’t a mess – because often, they are.

Everyone has parts of their company backstage that are a mess. People try to act like they have it together, but they can be delusional. It’s okay to have certain messes backstage. As the late Gary Halbert used to say, “Everything is a clusterf*ck until it’s as smooth as silk.”

But, treat yourself like the million dollar racehorse. Ask yourself,

“What am I doing now that is tearing me down?”

Don’t suffer fools. Really think about how you would treat the million dollar racehorse, and that needs to be how you treat yourself.

Andre Norman overcame poverty, gangs, and prison to become an International Speaker and Harvard Fellow. Having survived rock bottom, Andre knew he could help others do the same. Andre’s pledge has been, and continues to be, to help anyone in need. He saves people’s lives.

I hear it all the time from Entrepreneurs: “I don’t have time.” ... “I’m spread too thin.” ... “I’m overwhelmed trying to run x, y and z.”

How do you solve one problem that solves 1,000 problems?

That’s the key. That’s the magic trick. If you can use your skills and ingenuity to get leverage it’s beyond powerful.

Think about it like this: When you're working on a project... start to think about how it will make the other projects you’re working on more ELF® - Easy, Lucrative and Fun. In this way you’re able to repurpose skills and strategy.

Learn, and become excellent at, the Art of Integration.

Many people look at persistence like an elixir. Persistence is a valuable attribute if it’s directed towards a meaningful goal... something important to you and adds value to your life and others.

Otherwise, the best way to get out of a hole is to stop digging it.

Some people are in holes. They are still doing activities that were necessary when they were broke; but now that they have become more capable, they are still doing their old activities.

Almost anyone could afford to hire a personal trainer, even if it’s only once or twice a week. You could change your life and business for the better if you looked at them with this philosophy.

It would shift your rituals and patterns. It would create strategic byproducts and cause you to think of other possibilities. What if you hired a cook? What if you hired an assistant? What if you brought someone in to help you organize parts of your life?

Instead of persisting harder, start adding capabilities. You will stop digging yourself into that hole. It will change the trajectory of your business and life. As Derek Sivers says, “Saying yes to less is the way out.”

Often, your not-to-do list is more important than your to-do list. Knowing what to say no to allows you to free up what you can say yes to.

Everything you say yes to, you’re saying no to something else.

How to have 20/20 vision in 2020. That’s the title of a great Inc article written by GeniusX member Benjamin Hardy. You can read the article here.

Ben talks about how both me and Genius Network Member Cameron Herold are going into 2020 with 20/20 vision. (And, so you know: Cameron actually wrote a phenomenal book on creating a shared vision titled “Vivid Vision.” Ben’s article has some super valuable insights into creating your Vivid Vision.)

In the article, I talk about how one of the keys things you can focus on in 2020 and beyond that can clarify so much for you is treating yourself like a Million Dollar Racehorse. Well, guess what?

YOU are the Million Dollar Racehorse.

And if you are the Million Dollar Racehorse, both in your personal and professional life, then the action step becomes pretty clear: Go into 2020 and beyond treating yourself like the Million Dollar Racehorse!

• Do what you have to do to focus on your HEALTH.
• Do what you have to do to focus on your WEALTH.
• Focus on those relationships and activities that are E.L.F – Easy, Lucrative, and Fun!®

I heard a nutritionist named Keith Klein share something interesting a while back. Let’s say you’re a clean eater and you want to eat healthy.

But, let’s say you're in a situation where you don’t have healthy food with you and there are only limited options around.

In this case, something like sliced cold cuts are not as healthy as, say, organic chicken.

Yet, if you’re hungry and you have to eat, you make a better bad choice. You make the very best bad choice you can.

Right?

A lot of perfectionists are stuck because everything has to be right before they do anything.

But in life, often we are forced to make the best bad decision with the options we have available.

So, here is my permission for YOU to make the best bad choice you can with the options you have in 2020.

Oh, and the good news here is that, if you think like this, you don’t end up making bad choices.

Why? Because you’re forced to think the situation through.

In a lot of ways, this ties back to being an Entrepreneur.

It’s never perfect.

As Entrepreneurs, we’re driving a car 100 miles per hour while we’re simultaneously changing the tires...

...and, we have to know how to change the tires while the car is moving and barreling down the road.

All the things that seem to oppose where it is you want to go are actually the way you get there.

Ask yourself, “How can I find the value in this difficulty?”

In fact, don’t only find the value in it, but realize it’s supposed to be hard.

The reason most people don’t get things done is because it’s just hard.

Yet, what is HARD?

What is hard is all the time you spend thinking about what is hard versus just doing it.

People who are torture victims often find it more mentally difficult to witness their fellow prisoners being tortured than the torture they place upon themselves.

Why?

Because observing the torture play out in front of them is more out of the ordinary than the torture they put themselves through.

When you are observing yourself procrastinating, take notice and take action to stop torturing yourself with the “thought” of doing it. (Actually, that can “seem” more painful than what you have to go through in order to just do it.)

You will get to a point where you know how to do it and where all the things that were seemingly insurmountable, you just do them.

...Without thinking.

...Take action.

Inside every Entrepreneur is a human slowly going crazy.

No one has their shit together.

Yes, there are people that have their shit together enough to have profits, employ people, have a great front stage experience…but everyone’s backstage can be a little hosed up.

When you go to a seminar, or take a course to improve yourself, or read a personal development book – it is important to realize that most people don’t do that.

They wait until stuff is so rotten that they are operating out of desperation. I did an interview with my friend Tommy Rosen on addiction and recovery and we were talking about twelve-step groups and how they are built through attraction, not promotion.

He mentioned how no one goes to twelve-step groups because they are attracted to it; it’s desperation that gets them there. In fact, most people seek out these things out of desperation.

The reason you’re a successful Entrepreneur is because you probably went through enough of the pain that you finally said to yourself, “Let me figure out how to not keep stepping over landmines.”

Once you figure it out and you’ve climbed the mountain and realize all your achievements, you’re going to pick an even bigger mountain to climb that is bigger than your current capabilities... at which point you’ll figure out how to build the capabilities to climb that mountain.

That’s just your life as an Entrepreneur.

Build you. Then start rebuilding.

The most important thing to protect as an Entrepreneur is your attention.

Think about it: What gets your attention?

Value your skills, and hone in on what you do that produces a result. Then, and only then, will you level up all areas of your business and life.

There’s a Member of GeniusX named John Ratliff. He has so many skills. Yet, out of all those skills, there are a handful of them that give him enormous joy and allow him to move the dial.

These are skills that are what I call Easy, Lucrative, and Fun – E.L.F.®

Many skills can be H.A.L.F.™ – Hard, Annoying, Lame, and Frustrating.

In fact, some skills can be Lucrative, but still Hard, Annoying, and Frustrating, and still H.A.L.F.

When you have something, such as a business, that is Hard, Annoying, Lucrative, and Frustrating... you are in a Success Trap.

Success Traps are harder to get out of than Failure Traps. When you’re skilled, you can have a lot of Success Traps you may be dealing with.

The question then becomes... how do you not get yourself in the Success Trap in the first place.

Then ask yourself, how do you get rid of the trap and put yourself where you want to be?

The best way to engage people is to sell them what they want and give them what they need.

Most people, including myself, have areas of our life where we are desperate, lonely, lost, and trying to find help.

We are constant consumers of “stuff” that will help us with our time, health, priorities, sleep, happiness, and more. Yet, some of the things people buy are not very healthy.

When it comes to what you have figured out and what you can offer people, realize that everything you have is actually irrelevant until someone gives you money for it.

It doesn’t matter how good a product or service you have is until someone has actually paid you for it.

At that point, what you deliver better be what you promised – and hopefully even far better than what you promised so you can exceed people’s expectations.

You may have a lot of know-how and spent years going through adversity to get to the point where you have now figured out how to help people.

That is awesome.

The question then becomes... how you get paid for that?

Fuzzy targets don’t get hit.

Getting clarity on what you’re trying to do is critical so you can create a criteria and standard by which to measure the result you’re pursuing.

One way to do this is by having Rules of Engagement. How do people engage with you on your team? How about when you’re in your office? How about when you have meetings?

If you’ve never documented this for yourself, it can be extremely clarifying and help bring awareness to the fuzzy targets that may be lurking in the backdrop of your business.

Another way that can be very helpful is Cameron Herold’s book Double Double on Vivid Vision.

It’s one of the best things you can write up for clarifying what your company is about, what you want to do, and what your company stands for.

When you delegate and hire, with a Vivid Vision, you have another easy and clarifying way for people to understand what you’re trying to do.

So create a Vivid Vision.

Set up your Rules of Engagement.

Both can help you gain clarity in your business.

When I give people money-making ideas, it can come across as simple.

Yet, what isn’t so simple is training your brain to think like a marketer. I can’t download that to anyone as quickly.

You also have to read books and absorb the material.

You should go through courses and programs.

You may even have to join groups.

Learn how to communicate, how to write effective copy, and be willing to go through the initial failures of trying to get your offer right.

When you sell, you need to do a damn good job delivering everything you sell so that when people get your product/service, they consider it the best money they ever spent in their life.

After they get your product/service, they then need to be willing to continue another month with you while referring you to their friends.

Most people don’t have the bandwidth, cojones, or stamina for all this.

Yet, if done right, it could make you a millionaire.

In 1990, William Styron wrote a book called, “Darkness Visible.”

After reading that book, I started making a link between the world’s greatest achievers and how much they struggle with depression, anxiety, suicide, and addiction.

The book tries to describe what it is like to be so depressed you can’t even take your own life... to feel so hopeless that even committing suicide is not an option.

Imagine that for a second.

In the book, he goes on to describe how many of the world’s greatest painters, actors, and so on have committed suicide.

It goes back to something I heard Gary Halbert, one of the greatest copywriters who ever lived, say:

"The world advances on the backs of its neurotics."

Some people are so traumatized they won’t ever get to the point where they have a great life. All “we” can do is try to reduce their suffering.

Yet, sometimes we don’t treat them that way.

Sometimes, the people who have the hardest time coping with life are treated worse.

We need to change how we treat them, and... change the conversation. It requires coming at things from a different vantage point.

The people we look up to and get attention are often wild and crazy. If you took away peoples’ angst, what COULD they accomplish? What WOULD they accomplish?

I did an interview with a tattoo artist at a retreat I was at. She said, “so many people think great things come out of addiction.” But then she went on to explain how she became a far greater artist when she was sober.

Addiction cripples people.

The question is: Are you willing to lose the suffering in exchange for serenity?

Think about it.

I make my money teaching Entrepreneurs how to run their companies and facilitating the highest level entrepreneurial groups in the world called Genius Network and GeniusX.

That’s my mission.

I want to help millions of people struggling with addiction.

If I had all the money in the world, I would use it to help educate people on addiction and change the global conversation about how people view addicts.

Instead of viewing them as moral degenerates, we ought to be viewing them as people who have had trauma in their life and thus, treat them with compassion – not judgment.

I’ve been in my own recovery in different forms for a long time. My addictions have been drugs, sex, and behavioral addictions later in my adult life. So, I’m familiar and can empathize with dysfunctional behavior.

I’ve also spent over $500,000 on my own recovery. I’ve done Ayahuasca in Mexico with one of the most sought after and renowned addiction speakers and authors. I’m the first person in the world to have a before-and-after brain scan after using the plant medicine Ibogaine and 5-MeO-DMT.

I’ve done everything from meditation, floating in float pods, twelve-step groups, in-patient and out-patient therapy programs, nutritional programs and more. I’ve run the gamut on being a sort of “lab rat” on myself, and I’ve been videotaping and documenting a lot of it because I plan on making a useful documentary to help people in order to find the best treatments that have efficacy.

I’m agnostic when it comes to addiction treatment.

I simply look at what has efficacy.

Different people respond to different things. Whether twelve-steps is utilized or not, one of the most essential things is COMMUNITY.

Rarely do people recover in isolation.

It reminds me of a quote by the late American singer-songwriter, Janis Joplin, “Onstage, I make love to 25,000 people - then I go home alone.”

This is even more pronounced in people who have fame and who need to manage their image.

Addicts have to be incredibly resourceful to live a double life.

Addicts lie, cheat, steal, hide things, commit crimes and can do a lot to other people – but the level of self-deception is even greater.

It actually takes a lot of ingenuity to live a life like that.

IF they reach the epiphany that, maybe they have a serious problem, which requires outside help, they can start to honestly look at their behaviors and how it happens.

When you join a high profile group, which I did, with billionaires, famous celebrities, Academy Award winners, NBA players, NFL players, musicians and world famous people, you start to look at things differently.

It doesn’t excuse certain behaviors, but I do have a deep empathy for people who get themselves into bad situations.

Most people are just carrying on the pain that was done to them.

They simply don’t know how to handle it.

People that the world admires can sometimes be so broken.

I’m friends with people you would know by name, but no one has any idea what they are going through.

They can be on the red carpet, get up and address people calmly and coolly, yet no one would know they were molested or the pain and suffering they carry.

Seeing things in this context is part of why I’m able to connect with people today.

...With empathy, but without judgment.

Be kind to one another. There are invisible burdens we all carry.

Years ago I learned something great from best-selling author, speaker, and businessman Harvey Mackay.

He would say to look at every key person in your company and ask this question:

“If this person worked for my competitor, would I be worried?”

If you wouldn’t be, then that individual is probably not as talented as you may think.

Then, ask yourself this question:

“Knowing what I know now, would I hire this person today?”

If the answer is no, then you’re probably just holding onto them because of the perceived pain of letting them go.

It can be a tough situation when it’s time to let someone go, and if it’s someone you have had an ingrained relationship with that you’ve built over many years.

It can be like a psychological trauma bond, and these dysfunctional relationships tend to show up in the workplace.

When this happens, we can end up taking care of incredibly toxic people and we don’t even know it until someone points it out.

However, rotting food doesn’t get better with age – it gets worse.

Remember: If you expect high standards, YOU have to have high standards.

The very best place to go is a well where there is already water.

Especially if you already know how to pull water out of that well.

People buy things from people that they like.

If they like and have rapport with you...if you suggest they take action, most likely...they will.

Instead of viewing them as moral degenerates, we ought to be viewing them as people who have had trauma in their life and thus, treat them with compassion – not judgment.

I’ve been in my own recovery in different forms for a long time. My addictions have been drugs, sex, and behavioral addictions later in my adult life. So, I’m familiar and can empathize with dysfunctional behavior.

I’ve also spent over $500,000 on my own recovery. I’ve done Ayahuasca in Mexico with one of the most sought after and renowned addiction speakers and authors. I’m the first person in the world to have a before-and-after brain scan after using the plant medicine Ibogaine and 5-MeO-DMT.

I’ve done everything from meditation, floating in float pods, twelve-step groups, in-patient and out-patient therapy programs, nutritional programs and more. I’ve run the gamut on being a sort of “lab rat” on myself, and I’ve been videotaping and documenting a lot of it because I plan on making a useful documentary to help people in order to find the best treatments that have efficacy.

The majority of people I encounter make a huge mistake: They send emails or texts without the willingness to make a phone call or follow-up.

Here’s what I mean: I introduce people continuously to each other via Genius Networking.

I then follow up with them to ask them if they ever ended up connecting.

Sometimes I’ll hear back that they exchanged emails, but never ended up getting together or really connecting.

They say the words, “We should get together for lunch”… but they never do.

Part of what I’ve learned being a Genius Networker is that you have to be persistent in your follow up without coming across as annoying.

You need to do it in a way where people feel appreciated and acknowledged. Your follow up has to show concern for the other person. It has to be intentional – and the way most people do things is not intentional.

Whether you’re making money, changing the world, or saving a life... if what you’re doing in your business or your life is important, an email or text is never enough.

To be a really effective marketer that delivers value, you have to be empathetic.

You can sell stuff to people and not have any care or compassion for humanity.

Yet, to sell and persuade in a way that creates value, it requires you to have a deep concern for the person you’re selling something to.

The best marketers who do good things in the world are incredibly empathetic.

If you combine this with direct response marketing, you can almost become a superhero.

With the right words, you can have people all over the world invest in what it is you’re selling.

This is true whether you have a for-profit business or charity.

The truth is, you can be a caring, hard-working person and still not be making a lot of money or making a difference in the world.

It requires knowing how to say something useful, where to say it, and who to say it to.

Think about this: The only difference between a $1 bill and $100 bill is the message on the paper.

When you start changing the words you use in your communications, you can very quickly transform your business and results, without doing almost anything else.

When someone is anti-marketing, it means that they’ve associated in their mind that marketing is bad or evil.

Marketing is just an example.

We all have our biases.

Yet, marketing is just communication.

It’s something everybody does.

In fact, take a breath and hold it. Keep holding it until it starts getting uncomfortable. Then, hold it a little bit beyond that.

When people say things like marketing isn’t important, remember that marketing is as important to your business as is oxygen IS to your body.

If you’re gasping for air, then you’re not getting enough oxygen – and if you’re gasping for business, you have a marketing issue.

If you hate oxygen, it’s going to be really hard to breathe.

The biggest marketing we ever do for ourselves is NOT with the marketplace, the Sales Video, the Webinar. or the Livecast…it’s the marketing job we do TO OURSELVES.

If you wake up and tell yourself a crappy marketing story – no good.

Everything that comes out of your mouth is either designed to attract or repel. Everything is a marketing job – and the biggest marketing job you have to do is the one you do on yourself.

Until the vantage point of how we view addicts changes, the ways we try and scratch the itch isn’t going to have the impact we want.

We have the largest addiction crisis the world has ever seen. In the first ever, Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol, Drugs, and Health it states that, “78 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose.”

In 2014, approximately 50,000 people died from opioid, alcohol or drug overdoses. That same year, 32,744 people died from car accidents. More people died from addiction than from car accidents.

This is a systemic, societal problem.

The greatest thing we need to do is unlearn what we think we know about addiction.

For example, here’s what I was told by an addiction doctor, I recently met with, who not only has been sober from addiction for 29 years, but has been treating addicts for 15 years: There’s a high probability for successful recovery with certain addicts if you can repair their gut.

Many addicts who are homeless on the street and have teeth missing are suffering from modern day scurvy from drinking sodas, eating fast food, and not getting any real nutrition.

Their digestive systems and stomachs are damaged. In order to repair their gut, so they feel better, you could utilize intravenous treatment.

If an addict goes to jail or rehab without fixing their gut, even sitting down with the smartest therapists won’t help their biochemical craving state. If you don’t fix their gut, the chances are they will stay addicts in prison or in rehab.

As long as it’s not a violent crime or repeat offender, if instead of sending people to prison for first time offenses, what if they could be sent to a treatment center? This could be made to work and could be rolled out all over the United States.

Think about it: How many millions of people are going into rehab centers or jail without fixing their biochemistry?

This is just one example of taking a different perspective on addiction.

The savings are significant as well.

In the Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol, Drugs, and Health it also states that every dollar spent on treating alcohol or drug addiction, four dollars in healthcare costs are saved.

If clinics all across the country started taking advantage of this, it could transform addicts' lives all over the world.

Think about it.

Let’s say you have an opportunity to bond and connect with people in an authentic and genuine way.

To do it, you need to come from a place of giving – not taking.

There are some smooth-talking, articulate people who give the illusion of sincerity, concern, and care for others. But, in fact it’s a setup.

Calculated actions are different from genuine care.

I genuinely go through life wanting to make people better off for having been in their lives.

When I interact with someone, I want that person to be better off than before I showed up.

That could mean giving them a book recommendation, listening to them, or just making them smile or laugh.

In the world of business, I’m always thinking about how to be useful, generous, and contribute to other people. I know I’m not entitled to anything.

If I get anything in the world of value, it requires me to create value for someone first. Nothing comes to us in life unless we create value for someone else first.

This approach ensures you’re always producing more than you consume.

This is what makes a productive human being. Many people in the world can be more of a parasite than a producer. But, you don’t have to be one of them.

The best thing you can do for your Clients’, yourself, and the world, is figure out how to create value.

And, one of the best skill sets you could ever learn, to help do this, is ethical marketing.

The more capable at marketing you become, the better you will do and the better off people around you will be.

In your business, think about who you want to be a hero to. If you could spend the rest of your life only serving a certain group of people, who would it be?

Personally, I want to be a hero to Entrepreneurs and I want to be a hero to people who struggle with addiction.

My friend Dan Sullivan, Founder of Strategic Coach wrote a book about being a hero. He says, “By identifying the key audience you want to create value for, you focus yourself on the most crucial people in your life, helping them to grow their capabilities - and growing your own as well…"

My entrepreneurial skills could help everyone on the planet. But I don’t want to help everyone on the planet.

Why? Because it takes me away from the people that matter the most to me.

If you can get clear on who you want to be a hero to, you can design your products/services, packaging, and positioning.

For example, if you wanted to be a hero to homeless moms, that’s a wonderful, noble cause. But, you can’t get paid from them.

If you want to do that, you have to figure out how to get money from someone else so you can fund that cause.

There are a lot of people I want to help who have no money.

To help them I have to make money from check writers elsewhere. Ask yourself this question: Who is most likely to cut you a check?

Your number one job as an Entrepreneur is to get checks.

So, be a hero AND get checks.

Craig Clemens, one of the top copywriters in the world right now, was having a conversation with a seasoned Angel Investor.

As they were looking at a product, the investor said to Craig, “This is a solution looking for a problem.”

The lesson Craig learned from this was simple: Don’t have a solution looking for a problem.

START with the problem.

Often, what you think is a great solution does not necessarily mean anyone is going to buy it.

One of the biggest dangers you can face as an Entrepreneur is falling in love with your own product.

The reason is because you then get into the trap of trying to convince people to buy it.

Yes, once in a while it works...but it’s probably less than 2% of the time.

Yet, that 2% of the time seems to convince everyone else to try and do the same thing.

Most business owners fail within the first 5 years of business because they create a product and business around solutions looking for a problem, and then they have to try and scramble to sell it.

This is how almost everyone operates, but it’s not just about creating the product.

Once you’ve invested that time into the product, you become invested in it. Yet, if you start with the marketing and selling, you won’t be invested in it at the same level as if you invested in the product.

Most books (and products) never sell because the Creator spends so much time on writing the book or creating the product.

They exhaust all their resources, and they end up with zero stamina left for marketing.

So what should you do?

Always start with marketing and selling and you will save yourself years of heartache.

Most people don’t exhibit courage until things are so bad they're forced to take action.

Left to their own devices, humans tend to stay in their comfort zone.

Something usually has to force them out of their comfort zone for them to do something about it.

Courage is life’s way of giving you a challenge.

The adversities and challenges of life will help you develop stamina, endurance, and physical strength.

Right now, think to yourself: “What is stopping me from getting what I want?”

Every problem I've overcome has one thing in common: There was always a discussion.

Either a discussion I had with myself or one I had with other people.

Most people have terrible discussions with themselves, let alone with other people.

By having discussions with other smart people, you learn how to have better discussions with yourself.

If you have a lot of angst in your life and you want more serenity, you have to talk it through.

You can do this with questions, tools, or conversations.

You may not get immediate answers, but if it's the right discussion, you will discover how to think about the problem or issue.

In Anthony Greenback's "Book of Survival" he says, "To live through an impossible situation, you don't need to have the reflexes of a Grand Prix driver, the muscles of a Hercules, or the mind of an Einstein. You simply need to know what to do."

If you're facing what seems like an insurmountable, difficult, impossible situation, you simply need to know what to do - and when you feel lost, it's great to have a place you can go to and talk through your situation.

When you feel hopeless, you want to be surrounded by people who will believe in you more than you may even believe in yourself.

Discussion groups can give people experience, strength, and hope.

I've always been good at getting smart people together and having them talk to each other, and as a result, great things have come out of it.

Wrap a structure around this and you can have magic.

Here's the one-sentence solution:

Seek out people you can have great discussions with and places you can go to continually grow.

Here are 24 Hiring Tips For Entrepreneurs...

1. Resumes can include references and they are better than nothing. However, they can be mostly lies in print. Have people send you a letter and video instead.

2. Be clear about what you want and what you don't want.

3. You can't train integrity. They either have it, or they don't.

4. Hire slow and fire fast.

5. Birds of a feather flock together. If you know a total badass, ask them who they know like them.

6. The best people I've ever gotten have been through word of mouth and through referrals.

7. If you want the best people to hear about you, you have to have something worth talking about.

8. Do a Kolbe (www.Kolbe.com) on yourself first to find your method of operation (M.O.). Then, use Kolbe for hiring.

9. If your Kolbe results say you initiate with Quick Start, make sure you have people with high Follow Thru around you that can execute.

10. You can always train skills, but not necessarily attitude. Attitudinal alignment is crucial.

11. If you're a marketing company, don't put anyone in an important position if they don't have experience with marketing. And, more importantly, have a deep respect for marketing.

12. Treat your hiring like marketing. Utilize all the direct response elements and thinking involved with marketing.

13. Rock stars aren't out there looking for a job; they are already somewhere. The best people don't need a job. Have a compelling offer to be attractive to them.

14. Create a control piece for hiring people into your company.

15. If you are an A.D.D Entrepreneur, make sure you have people around you that have a surplus of attention.

16. Look for Innovation Managers; not Project Managers.

17. Surround yourself with awesome people that genuinely care about your clients.

18. Years ago I interviewed a hiring expert named Barry Shamis. He had a great line he shared with me: "An employee is a behavioral rental agreement." When people hire you and/or your company, you are a behavioral rental agreement too.

19. My dear friend Dan Sullivan says, "Don't look at employees as a cost; they are an investment." Yes, there can be bad investments, but it is still an investment.

20. If the person you hire doesn't make you money, save you money and/or reduce your stress... re-evaluate the investment.

21. Dan Sullivan says, "If you have enough money to solve a problem, you don't have a problem." So if you can cut a check to solve your hiring problem, do it.

22. Make a 'Not To Do' List. Then, if anything on that list is important enough, hire someone to do it. As Peter Drucker said, "There is nothing so useless as doing that which should not be done at all."

23. Liberate yourself from doing activities you may be good at, but drives you nuts.

24. If you are no good at hiring people, find the right person to handle hiring for you.
