#GivingNewsDay expands

#GivingTuesday is a day of charitable giving. In the news industry, there’s a slight variation called #GivingNewsDay: a movement to raise awareness for ethical journalism. 

But why limit your support of local, independent, ethical journalism to just one day? 

Quite a few Civil newsrooms launched #GivingNewsDay campaigns and many are still accepting donations. Giving to a Civil newsroom means that you’re giving money to news outlets that you can trust because they have been vetted by the Civil community.

Ain’t no party like a (2020) decentralized party.

Earlier this week, the New York Times reported that Twitter’s CEO Jack Dorsey was looking to fund the creation of software that would shift control over the service to its users. 

This is just one of many projects around the globe that are looking to decentralization to fix problems of the platform hegemony, and give ownership of your personal data back to, well -- you. 

This vision is at the heart of Civil. It’s the idea behind the Civil Registry, which launched in March of this year -- and is driving our roadmap for 2020. We envision a world where you can trust what you read and control your data because only YOU hold the keys to how that data is being used. This is our vision for 2020 and beyond.

However you’re ringing in 2020, we hope that it’s a great celebration. We’re so thankful to have you along on this crazy, decentralized ride with us.

What we’re reading

This week, Wired released this opinion piece about what the technology companies of the future need to think about when being sensitive to individual users’ privacy sensibilities. Their biggest takeaway? Give the power back to the people. 

The authors write, “We will not reach the next stage of digital growth without greater trust. That trust must derive from the ability of people to ensure their privacy… Building a fair and effective market for de-risked data will require four structural elements: personalized data management; the assignment of data ownership; a transaction infrastructure; and dynamic data pricing.”

What you said about the future of the internet

Last week, we asked how you felt about the future trajectory of tech and the internet. 70% said they were at least somewhat dissatisfied, compared to just 3% who said they were very satisfied.

Some of you fear a complete loss of privacy and extreme censorship, while others fear a rise in corporate consolidation and regulation. One of you voiced a more far-reaching worry:

• “I'm concerned that tech and the internet are permanently changing our brains and our culture to a less humane place.”

This certainly represents many of our fears, too, and describe some of the reasons we started Civil in the first place. 

However, you also have hope. Some believe activists and younger generations, in general, will use technology for more humanitarian purposes, while others believe brilliant technologists will develop new methods for overcoming the abuses we currently experience with tech today. You also mentioned a growing awareness of the importance of a free and open internet.

• “Decentralization can loosen the grip of oppressive governments and minimize corporate's ability to manipulate less informed and less fortunate people.”

At Civil, we’re pioneering the trusted web because we believe decentralization is the path to a better and brighter future for tech and the internet. We’re thankful for your support and glad to have you along with us on this journey.

Facebook too big to fail?

Despite a decade of intense public scrutiny across multiple continents and multiple elections, and essentially becoming the face of Big Bad Tech in the process, Facebook’s actual business has simply yawned and continued to grow with astonishing consistency and scale.

Facebook booked $70 billion in revenue last year, a 25% increase year-over-year and 14X since it went public in 2012. If you’re a U.S. or Canadian reader of this newsletter, Facebook made $41 selling your data to advertisers in 2019. Overall, advertising accounted for 95% of all Facebook revenue. We’re all tired of blaming Facebook for the internet’s problems, but any plausible solution needs to be viewed in contrast to its large shadow online.

At Civil, we believe we’re at risk of losing the promise of the internet forever in favor of something bordering on totalitarian. Surveillance and propaganda are surging, while trust, discourse and personal dignity are in decline. Facebook and Google are the colonists of an internet that could be centralized. Every day, Civil fights for an internet that is permanently decentralized. Our mission is an internet that stays open, true and powered by people. 

After a nuclear winter, blockchain, crypto and decentralized technologies are starting to gain credibility once more. This time, with more maturity and patience but also a growing sense of inevitability. Civil has been working in this space for more than 2 years now, during which time we have honed our command of the possibilities and our vision for how to bring it to market. Our team and our partners are simmering with enthusiasm for 2020 and beyond. Watch this space.

What we're reading

Can we harness lessons learned in public broadcasting to build community-oriented digital tools? The Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia released an essay this week outlining a case for digital public infrastructure. 

“Our solutions cannot be limited to asking platforms [like Facebook, Google and others] to do a better job of meeting their civic obligations -- we need to consider what technologies we want and need for digital media to have a productive role in democratic societies.”

The essay examines the introduction of technologies like radio and television, and how societies regulated those technologies. The challenge for the future?

“Imagine possible futures where surveillant advertising delivered by monopoly providers isn’t the only available option to build a thriving future of democratic communications.”

Ending the Civil journey

It''s with a heavy heart that I announce the end of Civil. The Civil team and technology will be joining ConsenSys to build identity solutions on Ethereum. 

In 2016, Civil was founded on a moonshot mission to create a blockchain-based media platform for trustworthy journalism owned and operated by the public. We set out to decentralize how the news is vetted, how journalism is funded, and how we stay informed as a society. We were among the first startups in the world to experiment with blockchain and cryptocurrencies in the media space. We built innovative technology, supported award-winning journalists, and inspired many people all over the world with our vision for a more participatory media landscape. But ultimately, we failed to sustain ourselves independently.

Several months ago, we started to develop products related to decentralized identity in the media and advertising space, which attracted enterprise interest for use cases such as trackable content licensing and transparent ad decisioning. This pivot led to closer coordination with ConsenSys and the team building solutions for identity and provenance tracking, which in turn started conversations about a strategic merger. We are excited to share that the Civil team and technology will join ConsenSys to be a part of these efforts. Although the journey for Civil is over, our new team continues to develop cutting-edge technology that I believe will contribute to building a better internet. This isn''t the outcome we had envisioned, but nevertheless, we''re proud of what we accomplished. We couldn't have done it without the support of our passionate community.

Newsrooms on Civil have always operated independently, and therefore will remain unaffected. The Civil Registry, Civil tokens, and other work are open-source and operational, but there will be no further active development or management on our part. The Civil Foundation''s future is uncertain, but it is effectively in hibernation for now.

Civil will always hold a special place in my heart. Our grand experiment did not achieve its mission, but we did succeed in bringing many people together around something radically different and in service of something deeply important.
