I’m not sure how long you’ve been in business…but chances are, you’ve experienced this.

Ever sit at your desk and just wonder why you’re not happy?!?!

I’ve been in business for over ten years… and throughout those ten years, I have had moments of happiness and moments of frustration.

It’s almost like I can have two personalities when it comes to my business! Sometimes I’m PROUD and EXCITED about what I’m accomplishing and other times I just want to stay in bed and never open my inbox again!!!

So what causes these two extremes?

PERSPECTIVE.

Most people would say that it’s a business’s job to do two things:

1. Make money
2. Provide solutions for its’ customers

But what if your business was more than just the daily grind of emails, payments, editing, more emails, and shooting?

What if your business existed for a greater purpose than just providing a service or product and putting money in your checking account???

My HAPPIEST and most FULFILLING seasons in my business are when I am aware that my gifts, abilities and talents in my business exist solely to bless other people. The fact that I get paid is just icing on the cake.

Think about it, we all live life hoping for a certain outcome in the end, right?

Maybe it’s wealth, maybe it’s family, maybe it’s faith, maybe it’s making an impact on the world…..we all want something to be proud of.

Sometimes I think our perspective gets shifted and we start to forget that our talents and gifts and passions were given to us in order to allow us to MAKE AN IMPACT ON THE WORLD. Whenever I forget that about my life, my business just becomes a “Money maker” instead of a “life changer”. When I’m working in “money maker” mode, that’s all I care about. I lose interest in my IMPACT and I get annoyed with the little things that frustrate me and all of a sudden, I DREAD work.

My worst season in business was when I forgot that my ability to take beautiful pictures and genuinely interact with my clients was my way of changing the world. When I choose to realize that my business exists for a much greater purpose than just putting money in my bank account, I approach EVERY aspect of it differently. I have more patience with emails, I view sessions as an opportunity to make a new couple feel amazing and I view weddings as a way to show a brand new group of people that I care about them.

It sounds SO simple…. but it is profound. Perspective shifts everything.

The amazing thing is, when I shift my perspective, not only am I HAPPIER with my job, I am more PROFITABLE as well! People are attracted to genuine hearts and they can tell if they’re just another booking on your spreadsheet or if you truly desire to have an impact on their life through your work!

So my challenge for you today is to evaluate your heart in your business. Do you need a perspective shift? Are you becoming increasingly more and more frustrated? Are you aware that your gifts were given to you to be a gift to OTHERS???

I’m telling you friends, this is a game changer!!!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING from our little Turkeys!!

Now, just to clarify, only TWO of the FOUR are actually ours! The other two belong to my sister and brother-in-law!!!

These precious little people feel like they are all siblings because my sister works for us full time and that means my mom watches the kids everyday at our house while we work. This business is QUITE a family affair and we love it that way!!!

Speaking of family, I hope you are either with yours right now or are traveling to see them soon. We’re getting ready to head to my brother and sister-in-law’s house for Thanksgiving and we can’t wait to see them. By the way, speaking of my sister-in-law, did you know that Morgan works full-time for our business AS WELL?!?!

So why am I sharing this?

Well, I’m just REALLY thankful for our team and I’m grateful for a business that has grown to support not only our household but other parts of my extended family as well. My greatest accomplishment in my business has been watching it change other’s lives….. and I never envisioned that it would be such a blessing to my own family.

A few days ago I shared with you one of my favorite phrases in business, "Micro Changes produce Macro Results"! After being in business for 10 years, it continues to prove itself to be true!

I want to share one micro change that we made during family portraits that has made a big impact on our wedding days!

Now I know that no photographer LOVES family formals, but we actually view this part of the day as one of the most "value adding" opportunities we have throughout the entire experience!

When you think about it, normally, this part of the day is the only time that photographers interact directly with the parents for an extended period of time. Normally the parents are who have invested in the photography and so this is a VERY important interaction!!!

Because our goal on the wedding day is to love and serve everyone well, we especially want to make sure we take care of the parents of our couple!! When you think about it, parents aren't normally celebrated very often at weddings because all of the focus is on the couple.

The parents are often the ones who paid for the day and who helped mold and shape their son or daughter into who they are and I think they deserve to be recognized for that. The mother of the bride is often one of the main planners of the day and yet she doesn't even get a SPECIAL DANCE!!

I realize that there are a lot of broken marriages at weddings as well. We see so many parents who are divorced or separated and I know that that is very common and we try to be very sensitive to those situations. However, whenever there are couples who are together and present at family formals, we try to take a portrait of JUST the two of them!!

No bride, no groom, just their parents!

We normally say something like "It's not every day that you two get this dressed up!! You need a portrait!"

From our experience, 10 times out of 10, the parents are surprised and taken back by the attention being directed towards them for a second!! They normally thank us and say "Well I didn't think WE were going to get a portrait!!! Thank you!"

This is probably the easiest way to love and serve the parents of your couples!! So next time you're photographing a wedding, take 10 seconds and love on the parents and give them a "Parent Portrait"!! It will make their day and will make an impact!!!

Hey Isabella!

I’m not going to sit here and write paragraphs and paragraphs about how to get more business FAST! I don’t think it’s that easy.

The truth is, after years of educating other photographers... the resounding theme of what I have been teaching is that success doesn’t come to those that want a quick fix. Success comes to those who are passionate, who fight for it and who are DEDICATED to it.

I’ll be honest...

I grew quickly when I first started my business….

but I also only slept 4-5 hours a night in college because I was working so hard to make this thing happen.

It was hard work from the very beginning.

Lets fast forward 10 years from those college days of no sleep, late nights and missing out on life going on around me... We now have an amazing business that employs me, my husband, my sister, my sister-in-law AND two contracted workers on a regular basis.

We have grown immensely.... but I don't think I had to put my health at risk in order to be successful, I think I needed to be more strategic with my time and my tasks.

After a few years of almost being burned out, I realized that I needed to really take a look at what was working with the way I was running my business and what wasn't! I needed a plan and I found one!

So what is the trick?

What’s the secret to staying in business AND growing your business?

Is it just non-stop “hard work”?

No.

I truly believe that some small business owners can work their butts off and never truly do themselves or their business any good.

The secret to running a successful business that changes people’s lives, increases profits annually and provides for your family is this…..

MICRO CHANGES, MACRO RESULTS

That’s right, that’s all it is.

As a small business owner, you will NEVER change your business completely just by purchasing a series of online educational courses… but you CAN change your business if you slowly but surely start implementing what you learn in those courses through small changes, one by one.

It could be small changes to your workflow, your shooting, your blogging, your social media sharing, your marketing, your client experience…. bit by bit, you’ll see a change…. but it TAKES TIME.

There isn’t an EASY button.

I wish there was!

I wish I could press a button for EVERY student and they see immediate change, but to be honest, that would HURT them.

Organic, genuine growth comes from hard work… you can't buy it, you can’t fake it and you can't just MAKE it happen fast.

If a successful business was just GIVEN to you, you would run it into the ground in about 6 months because success comes from the journey.

SO WHAT DOES THE "MICRO CHANGES MACRO RESULTS" IDEA LOOK LIKE?

I’ve learned so much about client experience over the last ten years. After dozens and dozens of thank you notes, it still amazes me that most of our clients thank us for treating their family so well during family portraits before they ever mention their images.

Isn’t that strange?

That’s a perfect example of a MICRO element of the day producing a MACRO impact.

These little changes seem so insignificant and that’s why most small businesses overlook them and then get mad that they aren’t growing!!

- The reality is, Michael holding grandma’s hand to help her to her wheel chair MATTERS….

- Me not losing patience with the over-bearing dad MATTERS….

- Not letting a sour venue coordinator spoil the entire day MATTERS...

- Delivering images 6 weeks before they are due MATTERS...

_ Pushing yourself to try something new and not lose your passion on a wedding day MATTERS

….

Every. little. thing…. MATTERS.

These MICRO changes will produce the most incredible results but you have to remind yourself that they ADD UP and they’re WORTH IT!

SO, THIS IS MY CHALLENGE TO YOU....

Take a minute to step back from the crazy workload you have in front of you.... the editing, the emails, the shooting... and realize that you will WIN so much faster and more efficiently in your business if you don't just focus on the big must-do tasks, but you also focus on the micro ways that you bless and impress your clients.

Maybe that looks like......

- Surprising them with a canvas on their doorstep when they get back from their honeymoon

- Helping the bride draft a timeline before another vendor does!

- Taking a photo of just the bride's mom and dad together during family formals even though they didn't ask for it!

- Introducing yourself to all of the bridesmaids and getting to know their relationship to the bride when you walk into the bridal suite!

- Creating a same-day slideshow at the reception!

- Blogging a wedding or session immediately and speeding up your overall workflow!

These are just a few idea but there are thousands of ways that you can be so much more than your clients ever expected.

So no matter what you’re doing today… whether it’s emails, or editing, or shooting, or marketing…. do the little things… because they add up and they count!

Surprise!!!! WE HAVE OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED A YOUTUBE CHANNEL!!!

There are some of you forever-faithful, long time followers who are really going to resonate with this announcement.

If you’re new to the KJ Brand, this is exciting for you too but let me give you a little back story on why this is such a big deal………

In 2008, I started blogging.

My business EXPLODED and my BLOG was the heartbeat of my business for close to 7 years!

I blogged every single week and I was more than dedicated, I was OBSESSED! Not only was this marketing system working but it quickly became more than just a way to drum up business, it was a way to connect with people, share my life, tell our story and permanently save memories that I will cherish for a lifetime!

Enter 2017.

I had a scare and emergency surgery at 9 months pregnant to remove an aggressive tumor in my hand and my blogging came to a screeching HALT.

Then, a month later, I had my first baby….. AND LIFE WOULD NEVER BE THE SAME.

I loved my business but I loved my baby more.

I loved blogging but I wasn’t obsessed anymore…. Instead, I was obsessed with a chunky baby who had her daddy’s smile.

Then, we got pregnant again and lost our second child, Baby James, at 31 weeks due to complications from Down Syndrome.

Then, we got pregnant 3 months later and had our rainbow baby!

Throughout the INSANE CRAZINESS of the last three years of my life, I never stopped blogging my clients and showcasing my work….

BUT….

…. I did take a huge step back from the personal side of my blogging.

This was hard for me. It hurt my pride that I wasn’t motivated like I once was but my love for my new role as “momma” meant more to me than anything.

I realize it’s normal for this to happen. For many, the season of having kids is when businesses naturally transition and scale back….

However, I always knew I wasn’t done.

I always knew that God wasn’t done with using our life, my gifts and our story to help inspire, educate and encourage other people. …. The issue was, the blogging atmosphere wasn’t what it once was, my time was limited and I just didn’t know how to get it done.

Enter Tyler Herrinton.

Building and growing a Youtube Channel has been on his radar for YEARS and so I’m not sure who’s more excited, me or him! Ha!

We’re THRILLED that we have a fun, efficient, accessible and consistent way to share ALL. THE. THINGS.

The content that you used to see shared through traditional blog posts will now be coming at ya’ through our Youtube Channel and we DON’T WANT YOU TO MISS IT!!!!

I want to share a quick story with you ....

We were on vacation once and my whole family was out on a little rental boat on a lake. We stopped for lunch in the middle of the lake and when we decided it was time to start driving around again, the boat WOULDN'T START!!! For the life of us, we couldn't get it working.

We gave up trying to fix it and we put on life jackets and sadly started swimming and pulling the boat in. We just knew that the whole motor was messed up and it was too much work to fix it.

Michael and I have found that when we have arguments, the most PRODUCTIVE moments of our fights are at the end when the anger subsides, and we both slow down and really think through what’s going on in our heads and in our hearts! Our life coach recently told us that…..

“We can either investigate our thoughts or suffer from our insecurities!”

Wow. Talk about TRUTH! Every marriage, friendship and relationship in general could benefit from that nugget of wisdom!!

So what does that truth have to do with a photographer on a wedding day??

Well, after a decade of photographing weddings and over 8 years of educating photographers, I have found that because of the STRESS that we undergo on a wedding day, there are several lies and insecurities that can creep up on us and really put a negative spin on the day if we’re not careful!

As photographers, I think we ALL may need to remind ourselves of a few things before each wedding day in order to save ourselves from falling victim to our own insecurities!!! Read over them before you begin capturing someone’s once-in-a-lifetime moments!! Here we go!

#1 Remember : You can let stress TRANSFORM you or you can TRANSMIT it onto others.

Instead of letting the stress of the day overtake you, make a conscious decision to rise above it. When you allow yourself to be consumed by the stress, it will be evident to everyone around you!

#2 Remember : Be RESOURCEFUL, instead of RESENTFUL.

They aren’t frustrated with YOU. Wedding days are stressful. That’s just a fact of life and that fact is never going to change. Recognize that whether it’s the planner, the florist, the MOB or the bride herself that may be short with you, their actions are more than likely not stemming from something you did. They are a result of the stress of the day. Try to be a resource in the midst of the negativity instead of being resentful.

#3 Remember : Believe the BEST in people.

There have been SO many times when Michael has had to remind me of this… especially when we’re working with other vendors that just. don’t. get. it. However, the truth is, being annoyed and frustrated with other vendors is a poor reflection of my character to our couple and to anyone else who is working with us.

#4 Remember : View the PRESSURE as a PRIVILEGE.

This only happens once. We’re responsible for capturing such sacred and special moments for this couple and their families. It’s an honor. When you feel the pressure and the weight of this job, remember that a lot of jobs with a whole lot less responsibility also have way less reward at the end of the day.

#5 Remember : It’s not DISTRUST, it’s DESPERATION.

I have to work really hard to not get defensive when someone tells me what I should be shooting on a wedding day. Hearing guest and parents say “Oh, I hope you got that!” or “Hey take this picture!” can get on our nerves but the truth is, the urgency and neediness of these people is coming from a place of desperation. They want to remember this day. They want the best for the couple and they don’t realize how offensive those statements are to a professional photographer. Let it go and remember that you know what you’re doing. You know more than the uncle Bob with his massive flash that is blinding everyone on the dance floor. You know more than the bridesmaid who re-styled the bridal details and is asking you to take one more shot. You know more than the overbearing dad who has asked you a million times if you “got the shot”. Just have patience with them. Take a deep breath and realize that they are just excited to be a part of the day. Uncle Bob is finding a lot of joy as he snaps away on the dance floor. The bridesmaid who is re-styling the details probably has a lifelong dream of being a wedding planner and the dad who keeps asking you if you “got the shot” just adores his baby girl…. and maybe he doesn’t distrust you… maybe he just really wants to make sure he will have the memories of giving his little girl away to hold onto forever, because he can’t believe she’s grown up and married.

Investigating your thoughts and your response to stress on a wedding day will DRAMATICALLY impact how much JOY you find in your job!!

Hey Isabella!

We all experience it at some point.

Awkward moments during a shoot are normal.

I actually tell my couples during their engagement session that if they DON’T feel awkward during the first 20 minutes, I will be shocked! It allows them to feel a little uncertain while also knowing that they aren’t weird!

However, this “awkward-ness” should end QUICKLY!

After teaching my couples the FOUR CORE POSES from our Posing Evolution, they normally start to get the hang of it rather quickly. I’ve noticed though, that even after the first 20 minutes, there is a point in the session where everything changes and their confidence hits a whole new level! Sometimes it’s within the first 20 minutes and sometimes it’s after the outfit change.

No matter when this new level of confidence hits, we’re always on a roll afterwards!

I call this moment the “BREAKING POINT”!

I think what happens during the “Breaking Point” is that our couple realizes the following things:

1. This isn’t that bad! I’m not even nervous!

2. We’re actually pretty good at this!

3. I can’t believe I’m enjoying this!!

So many people dread photo shoots because they have the worst expectations. They think it’s going to be awkward, forced and miserable and it doesn’t have to be!

My goal is to make the BREAKING POINT happen as soon as possible!

Here are 5 tips to making your couples comfortable as soon as possible!!

1. Start by explaining that they don’t need to be experts! You’ll educate them along the way and you have ZERO expectations!

2. Praise them constantly no matter what! They need to know that they are doing a good job. OVER-PRAISE them! You can never encourage them enough!

3. Find “their pose” as soon as possible. This is the pose that they mastered the quickest and that looks the best on them!!

4. Recognize their weak areas and subtly avoid them.

5. Be DIRECT and CLEAR in your posing instructions to ensure that they are confident! If you’re rambling and aren’t speaking clearly, this will affect their confidence in you AND in their posing skills!
