And we look forward to what we can achieve by working together in 2020 for a cleaner, greener environment on our doorstep so that together we can all be very proud to love where we live!

The Wombles have come out of hibernation for the Great British Spring Clean and they want you to join them!

Officially launching today, the Great British Spring Clean 2020 is about demonstrating that you love where you live – whether that’s by pledging to pick while you’re walking the dog or taking the kids to school, hosting a clean-up or joining someone else’s clean-up.

Last year, more than 560,000 people took part and this year we are aiming to get 600,000 #LitterHeroes out there.

Pledge to pick for the Great British Spring Clean
20 March - 13 April 2020

Actions speak louder than words. Show the love for where you live by pledging to pick for this year's #GBSpringClean.

Simply tell us how many minutes you are going to give to the campaign. You can give as little as 15 minutes and pick up litter while walking the dog or on the way to work.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) - Great British Spring Clean guidance

The aim of the Great British Spring Clean is for communities to come together, clean up their local environment and have fun, which of course means staying safe at all times.

Given the UK Chief Medical Officers have now raised the coronavirus (COVID-19) risk to the UK from moderate to high, its only sensible that volunteers engaging in the Great British Spring Clean take extra hygiene precautions to prevent the spread of this, or any other, preventable illness.

Do not attend a clean-up if you feel unwell or are showing cold or flu like symptoms, stay home to protect yourself and others. 

Keep Britain Tidy asks that you undertake your clean-up events in line with the advice being issued by Public Health England (PHE). In particular, participants are asked to use the following guidelines:

• Wear gloves during the clean-up at all times
• Wash your hands thoroughly for 20 seconds before and after your event
• Event organisers are advised to provide hand sanitiser for participants where possible or sign post to accessible hand washing facilities 
• Clean and disinfect regularly touched objects, such as litter pickers, using your regular cleaning products
• Stay at least 2 metres (about 3 steps) away from other people whenever possible

Being part of the Great British Spring Clean is a wonderful way to show you care about your local environment but to have fun, as well as to make a difference, it is important to stay safe and take these simple precautions to make your event a success.

We need your help to tackle plastic pollution!

Creating Meaningful Change

This month, the long-awaited Environment Bill made its return to Parliament. While much of the Bill so far is a great step forward, there are important areas where it falls short of creating meaningful change.

One of these areas is plastic pollution. We need you to contact your MP and ask them to support an amendment to the Bill establishing plastic reduction targets.

What''s Happening 

Everyday, a deluge of plastic continues to enter the environment. Plastic packaging production is expected to double by the late 2030s, and quadruple by 2050. Working with our friends at The WI, Friends of the Earth, Surfers Against Sewage, and Tearfund, we’re campaigning to enshrine ambitious targets that reduce unnecessary plastic at source.

To kick off the campaign, last week our Tidy Britain All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) joined forces with the Ocean Conservation APPG, inviting youth activists from across the country to quiz a panel of leading experts on the true solutions to plastic pollution.

Hundreds of students, politicians, and environmental NGOs were in attendance to watch our expert line-up, including the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Rt Hon George Eustice MP, Prof Richard Thompson, Director of the Marine Institute at Plymouth University, and Lucy Siegle, writer and broadcaster. What Can I do? 

During the event, we held a poll which found that the majority of people think government action is the key to tackling the crisis.

Your MP represents your interests in parliament, and we need you to make sure they act on preventing plastic pollution.

This event is part of a programme of work calling for targets on plastic pollution in the Environment Bill. Keep Britain Tidy are working with Surfers Against Sewage, Friends of the Earth, The National Federation of Women''s Institutes and Tearfund to campaign for this. You can find more information here.

#Litterheroes training in Hackney

Hackney Council are working with Keep Britain Tidy to deliver a practical #LitterHeroes training session on Saturday 14th March where you will learn how to successfully plan, promote and carry out a litter pick event to ensure its success from the start!

The course is supported by the council and therefore FREE OF CHARGE to anyone living in the following postcode areas E2, E5, E8, E9, N1, N4, N5 and N16.

The Great British September Clean
11-27 September 2020

We are thrilled to launch the Great British September Clean today, after the Great British Spring Clean was cancelled due to Covid-19.

Now we''re calling on you - our #LitterHeroes - to be part of the pick and do your bit to care for the environment on your doorstep, as we join forces to collect and safely dispose of litter from our country''s streets, parks and beaches.

So join us, as we stand together and declare that litter – which degrades the beauty of our environment and threatens to harm wildlife – is not acceptable.

There''s two ways you can get involved and show support for our Great British September Clean:

1. Organise a private group clean-up with up to five family & friends.

2. Pledge to do your own individual clean-up, you can give as little as 15 minutes to the campaign.

Join our Love Where You Live Challenge

We can all do some simple things that are good for us and good for the planet.

Everything we do and everything we stand for at Keep Britain Tidy can be summed up in a single phrase - Love Where You Live - and we want people, even in these difficult times to be able to share that love.

That is why we have launched our new online campaign - The #LoveWhereYouLive Challenge.

In the current climate, a lot of activities that our #LitterHeroes community usually do in the big wide world are not possible but that doesn’t mean that we can’t still love where we live. 

How to get involved:

1. Pick a theme - some ideas include: your favourite recipe to reduce food waste; mending, repairing & upcycling things around the home; keeping in touch with people in need; home-schooling ideas; discovering nature in your garden; nifty & eco-friendly crafts ...and many more - be creative!
2. Create some content - a short video, vlog, photo or illustration that shows how you''re making the most of your time at home and loving where you live.
3. Post your content to social media - tag a friend to get involved too and don''t forget to use the hashtag #LoveWhereYouLive as well as @KeepBritainTidy.
4. Once you''re done, try something else - you can get involved as many times as you like! We will share our favourites.

Stay home, stay safe and start creating. Challenge accepted!

Everyone at Keep Britain Tidy has been absolutely blown away by your support for this year’s Great British Spring Clean. Together – volunteers, local authorities, charities and businesses – have shown tremendous commitment to the campaign and to each and every one of you we would like to say a huge big thank you.

Our first priority has always been making sure everyone stays safe and so we have taken the decision to postpone this year’s Great British Spring Clean until September.

Join us for the Great British September Clean, from 11-27 September, when we will be bringing communities back together to clean up our streets, parks and beaches.

If you had already planned to take part in the Great British Spring Clean you can reschedule your activity for the new campaign period, instead of cancelling it.

In the coming days and weeks, we will be updating you on how you can get involved and show your support to help Keep Britain Tidy now.

The Great British Spring Clean 2021

28 May - 13 June 2021

Building on five years of success, we are delighted to announce the dates for our sixth annual mass-action environmental campaign, the Great British Spring Clean.

This year our outdoor spaces and places have mattered to us more than ever before. They have been a sanctuary during challenging times, and from 28 May 2021, we will be calling on hundreds of thousands of #LitterHeroes from across the UK to join us and show some love for those special places that helped us though lockdown.

We have moved the campaign dates a little later in the year than usual, as our great nation starts to recover from the pandemic.

And whether life has returned to normal, or we are still taking precautions to protect ourselves and others, we will provide all the advice and support you need to safely take part in the Great British Spring Clean 2021.

So grab your litter-pickers and get ready - 2021 is going to be our biggest year yet!
