Plan a Holiday Day Trip: There are tons of awesome places to take a day trip or a long weekend this holiday season and we put them all in in this list.

Do Free Stuff: Because this season is usually the opposite of cheap, here are lots of free stuff to do with your family during the holidays.

Help Others: While volunteering is a great thing to do all year, the Christmas spirit certainly lends itself to helping others. Here is a list of ways you can help families in the Upstate plus options for volunteering.

GCS School Schedule: Phased in 5-day for elementary

All elementary students enrolled in the in-person option will be heading back to classes full-time over the next few weeks.

The district will stay on Plan 2 (two days a week in-person attendance) for middle and high schoolers.

Fall Festivals: These fall festivals are still happening.

GCS School Schedule

We will update here every week if there is a change in the GCS attendance schedule.

The district will be moving to Plan 2 (two days a week in-person attendance) starting on September 8th. Blue/Green groups will go on Mondays and Wednesdays and Red/Purple on Tuesdays and Thursdays, no one on Fridays. Because this change takes effect after the Labor Day holiday, the Blue/Green groups will only be in school on Wednesday.

Our newsletter is late today. Last night, we interviewed Derek Lewis, a Greenville County School Board member to get answers to four pages of questions readers sent us about the new Greenville County School plans. He gave us a lot of great information, and you can watch it here.

At 11 am this morning, Governor McMaster issued a statement that all public schools should offer a 5-day option in addition to a virtual option. At 2 pm, Greenville County Schools issued their reply to his statement. It''s been a busy day for school news. We are going to have even more questions for Derek next time we interview him.

Blueberry & blackberry season is happening right now! Here''s where you can pick your own berries - mmmmm.

I got to go to the grand opening last week of the AnaVista Tower at Anakeesta in Gatlinburg (photo below) and it was so cool! It''s the highest point in the city with sweeping views of the Smokies and into North Carolina, just beautiful. There is so much at Anakeesta to enjoy with your family if you''re headed out that way.

We were live at Christ Church Episcopal School (partner) where Oklahoma-born sculptor and internationally acclaimed landscape artist Patrick Dougherty, the "Stickman", has been working to build several large-scale sculptures made entirely out of willow saplings! Tubing: This is usually the last weekend of the summer season for tubing in our area - here''s where to go.

Homeschool at Dollywood: The famed theme park has Homeschool Days from now until September 21, which include lots of educational programs and discount admission.

GCS School Schedule

We will update here every week if there is a change in the GCS attendance schedule.

The district will be moving to Plan 2 (two days a week in-person attendance) starting next Tuesday, September 8th. Blue/Green groups will go on Mondays and Wednesdays and Red/Purple on Tuesdays and Thursdays, no one on Fridays. Because this change takes effect after Labor Day, the Blue/Green groups will only be in school on Wednesday.

The district will stay on Plan 2 (two days a week in-person attendance). Blue/Green groups will go on Mondays and Wednesdays and Red/Purple on Tuesdays and Thursdays, everyone does e-learning on Fridays. Some students (1st graders + others) are phasing into 5-day attendance.

If you need something else to think about other current events, how about seeing a mermaid on a boat cruise in Hilton Head Island? Yup, a real mermaid swimming in the salt marsh while you and your kids are on a completely shaded boat asking the mermaid questions. It''s a big boat too so social distancing is easy. ??

Our World Changed.
First Presbyterian Academy Did Not.
Join them on one of their two campuses serving K-12 as we move forward!

Five Oaks Academy is a Montessori school for 18 months through middle school. Their distinctive spiral curriculum and multi-age classrooms combined with their use of outdoor classrooms and trails will help each child thrive in this cohesive program.

Southside Christian School has developed a three phased response to COVID-19. Phase 1 is all students on campus. Phase 2 is the Middle and High School in an A/B schedule with elementary remaining on campus in full. Phase 3 is Middle and High School in virtual learning, with elementary and special needs services remaining on campus.

CCES is an independent day school serving approximately 1,100 students in grades K5-12 in Greenville, South Carolina. Our admission team is working on campus and available to give tours either in-person or virtually!

Abiding Peace Academy is a preschool and elementary school that provides excellent Christian education, small class sizes, and dedicated, nurturing teachers. They were recently ranked in the top 10% of a nationally normed satisfaction survey for Christian schools. Middle School is coming fall 2021!

Mitchell Road Christian Academy challenges students in K3-8th grade academically and spiritually as they partner with parents to create ambassadors for Christ. Primrose School of Simpsonville is dedicated to serving our families in our community. Prince of Peace Catholic School, a U.S. National Blue Ribbon School, with a solid curriculum and Catholic values, has over 150 students in grades K4-8.

Greenville Classical Academy partners with parents to train their children in K4-12th grades to be virtuous and engage culture.

Winter kayaking: Paddling in Congaree Forest is awesome during the winter months because no bugs - and you can still enjoy the incredible landscape.

Waiting for snow: We''re stalking WYFF''s Chief Meteorologist Chris Justus on his Facebook page as he predicts possible snow soon for the Upstate.

?? Waiting for Santa: Some local fire departments are sending Santa out on the firetruck before Christmas. Here''s where to catch him!

?? Seeing Christmas lights: Most Christmas light displays end come December 31st so go see them -here are a ton of places in Greenville & Spartanburg - if you want to check them out before they are turned off.

?? Eating outdoors w/ heaters: We have a list of restaurants in both Greenville and Spartanburg that have outdoor dining available with heaters.

?? Winter hiking: Winter hiking is a great time to hit the trails for lots of reasons (#1 is no bugs!) - here are our favorite hikes for this beautiful time of year.

Go snow tubing: We love snow tubing and most places near us are now open (be sure to check before you go though because things can change quickly depending on weather).

Take a waterfall driving tour: All these waterfalls you can see with little to no hiking and they make for a fun day trip in NC (also - free!).

Play at an indoor waterpark: The Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort in Gatlinburg has a huge indoor, heated waterpark and you can go even if you aren''t staying at the resort (which is pretty amazing).

Would your child benefit from 1-on-1 tutoring or e-Learning support? Wired Minds (partner) has half day, full day and after school options. They also have programs to help students prepare for SATs or ACTs. Learn more here!
