We are excited to work with you to give students and adults the tools they need to thrive in classrooms and workplaces. We have so much to do!

Triangle Esports Championship

Thank you to all who attended TEC2020! Over 600 people packed the Herb Young Community Center in Cary to compete in multiple gaming tournaments. Congrats to all the winners! All proceeds from the event will sponsor digital inclusion programming provided by Kramden and the Triangle Literacy Council.

COMPUTER DONATIONS

Kramden has awarded 1,900 computers so far this year which would not be possible without computer donors. While the shutdown put giving on hold for a bit, the past few weeks have seen an uptick in both individual and corporate donations. Thankfully, Kramden has a new truck and our team has been able to utilize it for large-scale gifts. A huge thanks to the organizations below for their recent contributions.

CAMP SPOTLIGHT: DIGITAL DJ

Explore EarSketch, the music coding software developed by computer scientists at Georgia Tech. You'll learn how to use EarSketch to create your own songs from a huge library of samples like drums, synth leads, and bass on multiple tracks. You'll also remix music from musicians like Common, Ciara, Young Guru, and Richard Devine! It's like Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) apps, but controlled by code. As you make music, you'll understand coding concepts like variables, functions, loops, and constants and music concepts like rhythm, measures, BPM, and keys. Register here.

Volunteers and Supporters,

The Kramden team has been working hard to modify our operations and programming during this unprecedented time. While the majority of our staff is working from home, we have been able to maintain basic operations in our warehouse. We have continued to process through computers that will be shipped to recipients or will be picked up once the stay-at-home order is lifted.

At this time we are again accepting donations of computer equipment Monday - Friday, 12 pm - 5 pm. Donors can leave their items on carts left at Kramden''s main entrance. Donation receipts will be made available. Click here to see a full list of items Kramden accepts for donation.

The education team has been hard at work putting together a variety online workshops for youth and adults. Over 250 participants have already taken part! See a full list of upcoming opportunities on our website and check out next week''s options below.

Volunteers are essential to Kramden. Once the stay-at-home order is lifted we hope to find a safe method for small groups of volunteers to contribute. In the meantime, please spread the word about the work of Kramden Institute and encourage others to donate in any way they can.

SUPPORT FEDERAL LEGISLATION

The Computers for Veterans and Students Act of 2020 (or COVS for short) was recently introduced in Congress. This legislation seeks to reform the process by which federal surplus computers can be donated and would allow the devices to be donated directly to nonprofit computer refurbishers such as Kramden. For more information about the COVS Act and its language, please go here. You can easily contact your representative and urge them to support to the legislation which would help end the digital divide.

COVID-19 Response

Kramden is actively monitoring updates from all health authorities on the spread of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. We take the health, wellbeing and safety of our volunteers, students and staff seriously. Consequently, Kramden will be curtailing the majority of our volunteer and educational activities as a precautionary measure. We will re-evaluate the situation at the end of March but until then, the following events will be changed:

Wednesday Work Nights: canceled
March Mini Geek-A-Thon: canceled
Digital Literacy Classes: canceled (beginning March 13)

We will continue to hold small daytime volunteer events (5 volunteer max) and equipment donations are welcome during regular business hours.

We urge everyone to follow CDC recommendations:

Wash hands for at least 20 seconds
Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, ideally with your elbow
If you feel sick, stay home
Avoid close contact with anyone who is sick, preferably around 6''
Try to avoid touching your face

Digital Literacy at Oldham Towers

Eleven seniors completed their fourth and final computer class at Oldham Towers on Wednesday. They left with new knowledge and a laptop computer thanks to funding from Charter Communication''s Spectrum Digital Education grant.

DIGITAL SKILLS CERTIFICATIONS

Since our Northstar classes began on September 18, 13 participants from our two class groups have earned 37 certifications on topics ranging from Basic Computer Skills to Microsoft Excel. These resume-ready certifications are designed to show employers that applicants have key computer, job, and life skills.

LEAD COMPUTER TECHNICIAN

Kramden is looking for qualified applicants for a full time Lead Computer Technician (LCT) position to start immediately. The LCT will interact with staff, volunteers and clients to assist with the technology refurbishing process. The position will be responsible for all tasks throughout the hardware refurbishing process including hardware diagnostics, troubleshooting, software deployment, inventory management, and general warehouse logistics. Coastal Credit Union Foundation Continues Support

As schools across the state shifted to online learning last month, many local community college students found themselves dealing with an unforeseen challenge: either find a way to obtain a computer to participate in their courses remotely or fail to complete their classes. Thanks to funding from the Coastal Credit Union Foundation, Kramden was able to provide over 300 laptops to Durham Tech and Wake Tech students.

Coastal Credit Union has been a long-time partner of Kramden, providing volunteer service and program funding since 2014. To date, 350 families have participated in Kramden''s Coastal-sponsored digital and financial literacy courses.

This week the foundation announced that it would provide Kramden a $50,000 grant to help further provide computers to community college students and k-12 public school students! We are overwhelmed by this generosity and look forward to distributing computers in the coming weeks. Thank you Coastal! Read the Kramden blog to learn more.

Dive into electronics with a week of circuit building projects. Learn how circuits work by prototyping with kits and safely experimenting with components. Get started with programming using Scratch, the most popular way for kids to learn about coding! BRIDGING THE DIGITAL DIVIDE IN DURHAM

The global pandemic has shone a harsh spotlight on the digital divide and has increased the need for devices. We have seen this first-hand in Durham which Kramden has called home since its founding in 2003. The Kramden team has been working continuously to fill this need as families take on working and learning from home. Since March we have been able to refurbish and donate 667 computers to Durham County residents! These donations were made possible by our many equipment donors as well as funding from numerous generous sponsors such as Coastal Credit Union, Truist, the Triangle United and many more.

LAPTOPS FOR GREENSBORO HOUSING RESIDENTS

Today, 30 computers will be shipped to residents of Greensboro Housing Authority! This year, Kramden had planned to use funds from the Charter Communications Spectrum Digital Education grant to provide basic computer skills training and laptop computers to 150 seniors across North Carolina. Because of the pandemic and health concerns for this population, we will not be able to offer in-person classes. Instead the remaining participants will receive laptops in the mail and will have a one-on-one phone training with one of our instructors.

ANSON COUNTY STUDENTS RECEIVE COMPUTERS

Over 100 students in Anson County received computers last week! For the past eight years the Caraway Foundation has helped Kramden distribute computers to kids in this rural county. This year the pandemic resulted in an increased need and Kramden was able to provide new Endless Mini computers. The foundation partnered with the Holla Community Center in Morven to provide safe pick up options.

A FAMILY OF GEEKS

The VanDine family has been involved with Kramden for many years and three members of the family are official Kramden Super Geeks. So when they reached out offering to volunteer as a family during the pandemic, we were eager to find a way to make it happen. For the the past few weeks, the VanDine''s have come in on Saturdays when the office is empty. They have been instrumental in keeping up our supply of monitors and desktop computers that we have provided to students in need. THANK YOU, VanDine family!

PROGRAM UPDATE

Since the pandemic was declared, Kramden has awarded over 1,000 computers and we will continue to distribute computers to those in need as equipment becomes available. If you or someone you know is in need of a computer, see application details below.

Please know that desktops are readily available at this time but laptop supplies are extremely limited and wait times may be considerable.

School-Aged Children

Children or parents may apply directly for a free desktop by clicking here (this option is temporary and only available to address the immediate need caused by COVID-19)
Educators working with students in need can nominate students for free desktops using the Kramden Tech Scholars program. High schools students are also eligible for $100 laptops.

Low-Income Adults

Individuals may apply for $50 desktops or $100 laptops through the Technology Access Program.

Nonprofits and Community Agencies

CAMP SPOTLIGHT: DIGITAL CREATIVITY

COVID-19 RESPONSE UPDATE

Since the pandemic was declared in March, Kramden has distributed 1,500 computers to families in need and conducted over 60 online workshops! There continues to be a huge need for devices and thankfully many donors have stepped-up to provide Kramden with devices and funding. We miss hosting Geek-A-Thons and the large amount of computers such events produce, but our staff is working hard to keep up with the demand.

Let''s face it: 2020 was awful. We''re glad to see it go. That said, our team adapted and pivoted quickly to meet the unbelievable demand for technology access and digital literacy skills we saw from the community.
