As a native Angeleno, I have been amazed as I discover the prolific work of the late Angeleno architect Paul Revere Williams - the first African-American member of the American Institute of Architects - right here in my own backyard.

Everything I am learning about him points to his having been a most remarkable man. Orphaned at the age of 4, Williams (1894-1980) was the only African-American at his grade school and was told he'd never be able to make it as an architect, which he dreamed of becoming. And yet, he did!

During a six-decade career, Williams worked on 3,000+ projects - mansions, modern homes, commercial buildings like Saks Fifth Avenue in L.A., and even public housing - and became known as "Hollywood's Architect" because of his movie star clientele.

There are two current books that continue the examination of Williams' work, and the authors of each, Stephen Gee and Janna Ireland, will be in conversation with KCRW's Frances Anderton on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2020, at 12:45 pm during the La Cienega Design Quarter's digital summit #LCDQStrong II.

Stephen Gee is the co-author, with architect Marc Appleton and realtor Bret Parsons, of the soon to be released Master Architects of Southern California 1920-1940, Paul R. Williams from Angel City Press, a detailed account of the architect''s rise to prominence with extensive research on 30 of his projects, including the 1936 Collins house, above.

Janna Ireland, an MFA graduate from UCLA's Department of Art, has just published Regarding Paul R. Williams: A Photographer's View with Angel City Press. Ireland''s book is a visual paean to Williams, with intimate black-and-white photographs of his architectural brilliance, as below.

While Williams developed a skill to sketch buildings upside down to accommodate white clients who might not want to sit next to him, he was not an apologist for his skin color. In an essay entitled "I Am a Negro," published in American Magazine in 1937, Williams wrote:

I came to realize that I was being condemned, not by lack of ability, but by my color. I passed through successive stages of bewilderment, inarticulate protest, resentment, and, finally, reconciliation to the status of my race. Eventually, however, as I grew older and thought more clearly, I found in my condition an incentive to personal accomplishment, and inspiring challenge. Without having the wish to ''show them,'' I developed a fierce desire to ''show myself.'' I wanted to vindicate every ability I had. I wanted to acquire new abilities. I wanted to prove that I, as an individual, deserved a place in the world.

How remarkable that he lived up to his middle name, Revere, full of courage and purpose and against all odds.

During Williams' era, Paul Ferrante founded his eponymous antiques business on Melrose Place in 1957. John Nelson Antiques opened in 1960.
