I sent you an email a few hours ago welcoming you to the Left-Handers Club and just wanted to make sure you saw it - some email providers filter things incorrectly or hide them on tabs you don''t see so hopefully this one will show up!l

Latest news from The Left-Handers Club
Hi Elijah
New Left-Handed Garden Pruners
With so many of us on lock-down for a while, our gardens are getting extra attention and we have the perfect tool to help you. These new Left-Handed Secateurs / Pruners have been specifically designed and manufactured for left-handers. The blades have been reversed so the top cutting blade is on the left meaning you can see exactly where you are cutting and also get a clean cut using them in your left hand.
Bypass secateurs have two blades that glide past each other (like a pair of scissors), enabling a sharp, clean cut close to the stem / root and are particularly suited for cutting live plant tissue as you can get a clean cut without tearing or crushing and causing damage.
These
left-handed pruners are made by UK manufacturer Burgon & Ball and endorsed by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and they have a 10-year guarantee from the manufacturer. Perfect for general pruning as well as cutting live green growth, they have a capacity to cut up to 2.5cm / 1-inch diameter.
Featuring:
Fully hardened & tempered, durable high carbon steel blade for lasting sharpness to reduce the risk of crushing delicate stems / torn plants which could expose them to disease & frost.
Robust alloy handles for lightweight strength & covered in a comfortable bright terracotta-coloured plastic grip for maximum visibility in the garden.
Rubber cushion stops prevent jarring with repeated use.
Overall length 210mm / 8.3 inches and weight 220g / 8 oz
Ideal for everyday cutting tasks around the garden - a must-have for any left-handed gardener!
Normally ?19.95 / USD $24.66 approx. - We have these on offer for April only at only ?17.95 / USD $22.19

Left-handedness and health
There has been a lot of research exploring the relationship between left-handedness and health, with various claims that left-handers die younger and are more susceptible to some diseases and syndromes. The claims have usually been quickly debunked but concerns about health still remain among members of our left-handed community, particularly with the current huge impact of Coronavirus worldwide.
A recent study from The Netherlands, published this year, looked at a group of over 20,000 people, with more than half of them being left-handed. The authors asked how many times they had been sick over the past 12 months, how many days they were sick and whether or not they suffered from allergies.
The authors thought that they would find a difference between right- and left-handers in the direction of a health disadvantage for left-handers. Instead, they found the opposite. Left-handers had fewer health problems and were generally less sick than right-handers. Also, there is a common belief that lefthanders are more prone to allergies, by the researchers found no evidence of that either.
This is good news for lefthanders and, while we will all have concerns about Coronavirus and its possible impact on us and our families it seems, at least based on this research, that our handedness should not be a factor.
We are not aware of any health authorities that are recording the handedness of people who contract the virus but if you come across anything please contact us to let us know and we will share the information.
Does hand skill asymmetry relate to creativity, developmental
and health issues and aggression as markers of fitness? University of Groningen, Netherlands, Published Feb 2020.

Hi Elijah
Having a dirty hand from smudging what you have just written is an issue for lots of us lefthanders.? We recommend adopting a good posture with your hand below the writing line and with the paper rotated about 30% degrees clockwise to avoid the problem.? But there is no harm in having extra protection by using the fast-drying in in our non-smudge pens!
We have tried out an awful lot of pens over the years and we only feature the ones that we have found from our own testing write smoothly and give a good ink flow when pushed across the page left-handed and also really do have fast-drying ink.
A standard Biro can do a good job but the ink can get bunched up around the tiop and leave blobs.? We also think that a good gel pen is smoother and creates much better writing.
German manufacturer Stabilo have always led the way with creating left-handed versions of their moulded grip pens and we also like their rollerballs because they have good fast-drying ink cartridges.
Talking about moulded grips, they are great for younger children learning to write - the bigger circumference on a pen or pencil makes it easier for them to master the 3-point or "tripod" grip grip".? This one is made of very soft rubber so fits on any size pen or pencil.

Hi Elijah
As lefthanders, the kitchen can be an awkward and dangerous place for us, being forced to use implements that are designed NOT to work for us! Most kitchen equipment has a strong right-handed bias and, unless it is specifically made with a reversed design for lefthanders, can be very difficult to use effectively and safely.
We are certainly adaptable and will make the best of using "standard" right-handed implements but when we can''t cut bread straight or end up scraping our knuckles trying to peel things, surely it is time to get the properly made tools.? And don''t even mention trying to use right-handed corkscrews by holding them still and turning the
bottle!
This short video demonstrates some of the problems in the kitchen and how they are solved by using properly designed left-handed tools.
We have produced a wide range of kitchen items designed specially for lefthanders - click the links below to find out more.

Hi Elijah
Over the years we have run a number of surveys to find out more about left-handedness and peoples'' experiences of being left-handed in a right-handed world.? The responses we get and the comments from Left Handers Club members are always fascinating and we are sure you will enjoy them too.
So, follow the links below to see the results and analysis from some of our best surveys:
Being left-handed survey This survey is about which hand left-handers use for various activities, how left-handedness runs in families and how left-handers are affected by their hand preference.
Left handed school
experiences survey There are lots of great things about being left-handed, but it can sometimes be hard trying to learn to do something in a right-handed way or with right-handed tools. Nowadays, many schools are realising that it''s not fair to make us left-handers do things "back to front" and that left-handers deserve to be just as comfortable when they learn.
This survey asked people about their school experiences and whether their schools and teachers helped them at all with doing things the left-handed way.
Left-handed life choices survey This was the biggest ever survey of left-handedness in various groups of people to find out what advantages and disadvantages left-handers have and how it affects their choices and success of career, sports, social activities and other lifestyle decisions.?
Our analysis of the results showed some unexpected outcomes and, as always, peoples'' individual comments are amusing and educational!

Hi Elijah
Have you ever had trouble writing with a cartridge pen or smudging your work?
As left-handers, we PUSH our pen across the page when writing from left to right, but standard pens are designed to be PULLED and the nib is made to give smooth ink flow when the right-hand half of the nib is drawn across the page.
When we push a pen like this across the page with our LEFT hand, we get no ink flow and the tip of the pen digs into the page or scratches across badly.? If that was not bad enough, our hand is following directly behind the pen and if we are not careful it smudges what we have just written.
To make the pens work, some lefthanders adopt a "hook" style of writing which allows them to pull the pen across the page so it works (like a right-hander!) and avoid immediate smudging, though it is very uncomfortable and awkward way to write.
A proper LEFT-HANDED CARTRIDGE PEN has a nib designed in reverse, so that ink flows when the LEFT side of the nib is on the page and they usually have a ball design at the tip so they can be pushed across the paper easily.?? That means you can adopt a standard, comfortable writing position, though we would recommend rotating your paper clockwise about 30 degrees so you are writing a bit "downhill" and that way can avoid smudging. BOOM!? Problem solved. Easy!
This short video demonstrates why writing can be a challenge for us
lefthanders.

Hi Elijah
Us lefthanders can struggle with stationery items and office equipment that is all designed "backwards" for right-handers convenience!? We ususally work more efficiently entering numbers with our left hand, so need the numeric keypad on a computer keyboard on the LEFT.
We also usually have better control of a mouse using our left hand, and while it is possible to just switch the mouse buttons in some cases, there are also specially designed left-handed mouse models with ergonomic shapes, and we especially like the "vertical" left-handed mouse.
We can also have problems using basic office and school equipment like rulers and pencil sharpeners.? This video demonstrates some of the problems and how they can easily be solved: (click to watch the video)

Hi Elijah
Do you remember when you were at school and had to start cutting out shapes with scissors and writing with an ink pen?? For a lot of left-handers that was a bit of a disaster as there were no left-handed scissors or pens available and the teachers didn''t know how to help them so just thought they were awkward, clumsy and generally hopeless.
That is a bit of a confidence hit for a young left-hander and completely unnecessary!? With a bit of simple guidance and the correct implements there is no reason why left-handed children can''t perfom these basic tasks as well as, or better than, anyone else!
We included information and videos on writing left-handed and using scissors in our previous emails and hope you found that helpful.
We have produced a lot of information on helping left-handed children and had a wide range of helpful products made to make life a bit easier for them.? Hi Elijah
In a recent newsletter we featured an email from a member saying that they always had problems with social kissing, getting mixed up on which side to start and wondering if it was a left-handed thing.
We got loads of responses about that and other things left-handers find awkward but have never really connected with being left-handed.?? Apart from the problem of greeting people with a kiss and getting it wrong, we also received comments on other things that made us think..is it just me or is there more to it? Some of the things that were mentioned were:
crossing other peoples paths/position on pavement
hugging
taking neighbours drink/bread roll at dining table
direction of work, decorating/painting rooms
being helped to put on a jacket
receiving change
putting children''s socks and shoes on
putting belts on upside down
visualise things the opposite way around
trouble opening/locking locks
work stations flow the opposite way
around
organising files "back to front"

Hi Elijah
Why is it that when you try to cut with scissors they never seems to work properly and you end up with a mess.? Is this you?
The problem is caused by using RIGHT-handed scissors in your LEFT hand - The top blade is on the right so you can''t see your cutting line and squeezing the blades together actually pushed them apart so the material bends between them rather than cutting with a "guillotine" action.
A proper pair of LEFT-HANDED SCISSORS are designed in reverse, with the top blade on the left so you can actually see your cutting line clearly and cut
cleanly when you squeeze the handles together.? BOOM!? Problem solved. Easy!
This short video demonstrates how proper left-handed scissors solve the problems.
Click the links below to see examples of proper left-handed scissors:
Household and general purpose scissors
Childrens'' scissors
Dressmaking and embroidery sicssors
Manicure scissors and sets
Haircutting and special purpose scissors
Keep an eye out for our next email where we will tell you all about how to solve problems with writing left-handed and smudging your work!

Do you suffer with any of these common cutting problems?...
When you try to cut along a line you can''t actually see it and end up missing it.
When you squeeze the scissor blades to cut, the material bends between the blades rather than cutting.??
People think you are awkward as you angle the scissors and try to look over the top blade to see the line you are trying to cut along.?
You manipulate the handles to try to keep the blades together so they will cut and end up with red marks and lumps on your left thumb.? This is made even worse if the grips are moulded for right-handed use.
You end up tearing the paper or material and think you are just hopeless at cutting things out.
The problems are caused by using RIGHT-handed scissors in your LEFT hand - The top blade is on the right so you can''t see your cutting line and squeezing the blades together actually pushed them apart so the material bends between them rather than cutting with a "guillotine" action.
This is a particularly big problem for young left-handed children when they first start cutting-out at school.? Everyone else can do it fine, but they cannot manage to cut properly, the other kids just laugh and the teacher probably hasn''t even noticed they are left-handed and wouldn''t know what to do to help anyway.? This can have a massive impact on their self-confidence and is one of the reasons they start getting thought of as awkward or clumsy.
Why should you have to put up with this?
Well... NO, you shouldn''t just have to put up with it just because most scissors are made right-handed! A proper LEFT-HANDED SCISSOR is designed in reverse, with the top blade on the left so you can actually see your cutting line clearly and cut cleanly when you squeeze the handles together. BOOM!? Problem solved. Easy!
Here are a few myths about scissors that you need to watch out for...
You can just turn right-handed ones upside down and that makes them left-handed
Er - NO! Right-handed scissors have the top blade on the right and it will always stay that way whichever way you turn them round and you still will not be able to see your cutting line or make them cut properly.
You can buy "ambidextrous" scissors that work for right-and left-handed people
NO again - it is the same problem - left-handed scissors need to be manufactured with the blades reversed so the top blade in on the LEFT. We have seen some scissor that have RIGHT-handed blade positions but have just the handles moulded for a lefthander and they are completely useless!
It is better to just get used to right-handed scissors as they are all that is normally available
Well, us left-handers ARE adaptable and it is possible with a lot of manipulation to sort-of make right handed scissors work in your left hand. But is will be uncomfortable and they won''t cut properly so why do that when you have the chance to use proper LEFT-HANDED scissors? This one is particularly bad for CHILDREN when they first start cutting things out at school because they will not be able to do it and weill be seem as awkward and hopeless by the rest of the class. Why not just make it EASY?
So.. If you want to be able to cut cleanly, accurately and comfortably, you really DO need some proper left-handed scissors!
As lefthanders ourselves we understand all this and we have created a wide range of specially made left-handed scissors for all purposes - Click the links below to see examples of each type of scissor:
Household and general purpose scissors
Childrens'' scissors
Dressmaking and embroidery sicssors
Manicure scissors and sets
Haircutting and special purpose scissors
They all have the blades fully reversed and either neutral or left-handed moulded grips. Using left-handed scissors WILL make a huge difference, even if you have never tried one before or have "got used" to using right-handed scissors badly.

Hi Elijah,?
I didn''t get your blank reply to my last email so maybe you are not seeing them? Would you mind dragging this email onto your primary tab if it got filtered and just hit the reply button so I know you have seen it?
If you have a left-handed child we have a lot of helpful reports, books and products that will make a big difference for them as they develop and help you as a parent to deal with their teachers who may not know much about left-handers.
If you have not already seen it, our free Resource Guide For Parents of Left-Handed Children is a great place to start. Use this link to download it: http://www.anythinglefthanded.co.uk/downloads/child-resources-guide.pdf
I will email again very soon with details of how to download your Backwards Calendar.
