New virtual student event: How to become a City lawyer in a post-Covid world

The final event of the 'Staying Set for Success' virtual summer event series - a partnership between Legal Cheek and The University of Law (ULaw) - takes place on the afternoon of Thursday 16 July.

It kicks off at 4pm with a virtual panel discussion featuring lawyers from the London offices of Baker McKenzie, Freshfields and Reed Smith, alongside a careers expert from ULaw. After the discussion there will be a virtual mini-law fair and video networking with the speakers, diversity organisations NOTICED and PRIME, and ULaw.

The lawyers will talk about their different routes into law and their journeys to where they are today. Drawing upon experiences from their careers to date they will advise students on how to follow in their footsteps and consider what things they may have to do differently as they apply for vacation schemes and training contracts in the aftermath of a pandemic.

They will reflect too on wider commercial awareness issues, including the effect of COVID-19 on global trade, likely hot practice areas of the 2020s and the continued evolution of legal tech.

Covid-19 has dramatically accelerated some of the technology-led changes already underway in society, with remote working and video conferencing firmly entering the mainstream thanks to social distancing. When the pandemic has passed, few people expect things to return to how they were before.

The NewLaw sector looks set to be a beneficiary of this shift. Its flexible approach that relies less on expensive central London office space and more on efficiency-driving tech could become a central feature of the 2020s legal market. This new way of working will dovetail with the introduction next year of the more flexible Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE), which will give students alternative routes to qualify.

On Thursday 4 June (4pm to 6pm) Legal Cheek is partnering with BARBRI to hold a virtual event for students that will explore these themes, giving insights into what new training options are on the horizon and helping them to develop their broader understanding of the legal market. A speaker from the global legal education provider will be joined by lawyers from NewLaw businesses Elevate and F-LEX, as well as a general counsel who is part of the O-Shaped Lawyer project, in a virtual session chaired by a Legal Cheek journalist.

After the panel session, there will be virtual networking with the speakers and other representatives from their organisations until 6pm.

On Thursday 17 September Legal Cheek is partnering with Linklaters for a virtual event featuring lawyers from the firm's ESG team, where students will be able to hear about some of the work they have been doing in recent months.

The transition away from LIBOR (the London Interbank Offered Rate) after a series of scandals surrounding it and other IBORs (Interbank Offered Rates) is keeping lawyers in this area very busy.

With changes being led by the market itself, many aspects of the transition to a new benchmark rate regime are still uncertain but one thing is clear: from the start of 2022 it is likely that LIBOR will no longer be available and any contract relying on a LIBOR rate calculation will need to have a suitable fallback or will be at risk of not working in the manner intended.

On Wednesday 30 September Davide Barzilai, global head of IBOR transition at Norton Rose Fulbright, and Hannah Meakin, a financial regulatory partner at the firm, will discuss with other key team members how traditional legal advice is being combined with legal tech solutions to help deal with the challenges raised by LIBOR transition.

The first in Legal Cheek's new autumn 2020 series of Secrets to Success events - held in association with The University of Law (ULaw) - focuses on the Midlands legal market.

Legal Cheek is seeking a new team member to help organise its busy programme of student events and law fairs.

The role is full-time, and can be done from anywhere in the UK. Duties include processing event applications; corresponding with attendees; liaising with law firms, law schools and partner organisations about event logistics; and assisting at virtual events.

A legal background is not essential but the role would suit a recent law graduate interested in either pursuing a career in events and/or marketing and publishing, or looking to gain experience of the legal industry before starting a training contract or pupillage.
