Along with most of the country, we've seen difficult challenges as a result of this unprecedented global pandemic we are facing together. Gallery and museum spaces have shuttered, and the majority of artists working in creative industries, many of them freelancers, have seen their livelihoods disappear with no assurances about when they'll be able to work again. We are pleased to announce, Los Angeles-based artist, Mark McKnight, is the recipient of the annual 2020 Light Work Photobook Award for his monograph, Heaven is a Prison. The book will be co-published this year by Loose Joints and Light Work. Light Work gives the Photobook Award annually to an artistic project that deserves international attention. As with all of Light Work's programs, in selecting the artists for this recognition, we seek to highlight emerging and underrepresented artists from diverse backgrounds. As winner of the Photobook Award, McKnight's book will be featured as the Book Collectors' selection in Light Work's exclusive 2021 Annual Subscription program.

"Mark McKnight's Heaven is a Prison is a provocatively beautiful debut monograph that explores the sexuality and vulnerability of queer bodies," said Light Work Director Shane Lavalette. "McKnight's dark, silvery portraits made in the harsh sun and shadow of the desert landscape evoke the intimate connection between pain and desire."

Mark McKnight is a Los Angeles-based artist who has exhibited and published work throughout the United States and in Europe. Recent solo exhibitions include Mark McKnight (Aperture Foundation, 2020) and in this temporarily prevailing landscape (Klaus von Nichtssagend, 2020). His work has been written about in Aperture, Art in America, and BOMB Magazine. Mark is the recipient of the 2019 Aperture Portfolio Prize, the 2020 Light Work Photo Book Award, and a 2020 Rema Hort Mann Emerging Artist Grant. He is currently represented by Klaus von Nichtssagend, New York and Park View/Paul Soto, Los Angeles. McKnight participated in Light Work''s Artist-in-Residence program in July 2019.

Heaven is a Prison is an exploration of intimacy with and within the austere terrain of Southern California's high desert. McKnight describes a queer otherworld that is at once utopic and purgatorial - occupied by a solitary pair of copulating, Sisyphean protagonists that appear both liberated and bound by their intimacies and the severe expanse in which they are depicted. Divided into chapters, the poetic sequences in this book oscillate between the literal and the figurative, between distance and communion, and between violence and affection. Claustrophobic, horizonless landscapes are coupled with images of ethereal clouds and tangled bodies that are simultaneously sculptural, shrewd, and tender. Through his synonymous description of landscape and body, McKnight suggests metaphor, pointing at both as vehicles - towards transcendence, bondage, beauty, and abjection - while also revealing them as two sides of the same coin.

"Gender is probably one of the most contentious and oppressive structures within society. Transgender politics have made a massive dent on these structures, ultimately proving the need to recognize and celebrate difference to the binary system, or to potentially dismantle it altogether. My intention in making Prototypes was to create a tableau that functions in relation to the history of representation that also deals with the depiction of queer bodies. There is a push towards being definitive, in terms of binary choice that reproduces stereotypical notions of the ideal." - Doireann O''Malley

These events are held in conjunction with the exhibition Doireann O'Malley: New Maps of Hyperspace_Test_01, which is the third installment of O''Malley''s Prototypes trilogy. This work was commissioned by Light Work for UVP to be the first exhibition-making use of UVP 360, which will allow members of the public to control the projection using their phones. This exhibition has now been moved fully online while our outdoor exhibition program remains suspended.

Two Week Countdown and final call for the 2020 Light Work Grants in Photography! Light Work began offering grants to CNY artists in 1975 to encourage the production of new photographic work in the region. Three $3,000 grants will be awarded to photographers who reside within an approximate 50-mile radius of Syracuse, N.Y. The recipients of these grants are invited to display their work in a special exhibition at Light Work, and their work will also be reproduced in Light Work's award-winning publication, Contact Sheet: The Light Work Annual.

All applicants must reside in one of the following Central New York counties: Broome, Cayuga, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego, Schuyler, Seneca, St. Lawrence, Tioga or Tompkins.

Three judges from outside the grant region will review the applications. Their decisions are based solely on the strength of the candidate's portfolio and completed application. Individuals who received this award in 2015 or earlier are eligible to re-apply. Full-time students are not eligible.

We see our mission realized in lens-based artist Eyakem Gulilat''s reflection on his residency: As an Ethiopian immigrant and artist living and working in Oklahoma, I have found it extremely difficult to locate a community of artists as vibrant, enthusiastic, and committed to the medium of photography as that I found at Light Work. The residency program provided me both an opportunity to contribute my voice to American art history and affirmed my personhood as an American artist. The residency offered lively discussions with fellow artists and staff members about the nature of photography. I was able to organize and make sense of my work with the guidance of the director, Shane Lavalette. This type of constructive criticism was crucial for me at that point in my career. The month-long program also enabled me to make my first photography book, this realization could not have been possible without the Light Work residency.

Artists are nothing if not adaptable, especially when facing challenges. In that spirit of resilience, creativity, and community, Light Work Lab is excited to announce the launch of our online Lab Sessions. Sign-up for personalized one-on-one Sessions to hone your photography skills, enhance your studio practice and improve workflow strategy. Affordable and flexible, Lab Sessions, led by Community Lab Manager Dan Boardman, allow you to choose a focused topic of instruction. Questions and curiosity are the only prerequisites, sign up to receive your Zoom invite to participate in your virtual tutorial. Click on the Session link from your smartphone, laptop, or tablet to begin an exploration of a range of subjects including Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, color correction, retouching, masking, camera raw and file organization. Sessions instructor, Dan Boardman received his BFA in photography from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 2008 and his MFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2012. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally and has work in both public and private collections. In 2013, Boardman was a Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Fellow and, in 2016, Aperture short-listed him for their PhotoBook Award. Recent exhibitions include 321 Gallery in Brooklyn, Harvard University, Mills Gallery at the Boston Center for the Arts, Mus?e des Beaux-Arts in Le Locle, Switzerland, The Photography Gallery at Riley Hall, University of Notre Dame, and Sad Gallery in Seattle.

With great pleasure, Light Work's Urban Video Project (UVP) presents Diaspora Suite by filmmaker Ephraim Asili. This revelatory cycle of five short films collapses time and space to reveal the hidden resonances that connect the Black American experience to the greater African diaspora. Encompassing history, politics, music, dance, poetry, and ritual. For a limited time, UVP will share virtual access to Asili's Diaspora Suite on UVP's platform. A post-screening conversation and Q&A with Asili will be moderated by Anneke Herre, director of Urban Video Project. The link will go live on Thursday, October 15 at 6:30 p.m. EST.

Made over the course of seven years the suite was shot on 16mm in Brazil, Canada, Ethiopia, Ghana, Jamaica, and the United States. Don't miss the opportunity to explore this playful, surprising, moving, and a radical interrogation of colonialism's legacy in its construction of a one-of-a-kind, global vision of pan-African identity.

Ephraim Asili is a filmmaker, DJ, and traveler whose work focuses on the African diaspora as a cultural force. His films have screened in festivals and venues all over the world, including the Flaherty Film Seminar; the New York Film Festival, NY; Toronto International Film Festival, Canada; Ann Arbor Film Festival, MI; San Francisco International Film Festival, CA; Milano Film Festival, Italy; International Film Festival Rotterdam, Netherlands; MoMA PS1, NY; REDCAT and LAMOCA, CA; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; and the Whitney Museum, NY. As a DJ, Asili can be heard on his radio program In The Cut on WGXC, or live at his monthly dance party, Botanica. Asili currently resides in Hudson, NY, and is a Professor in the Film and Electronic Arts Department at Bard College.

For a limited time, Urban Video Project will share virtual access to Doireann O'Malley's Prototype I: Quantum Leaps in Trans Semiotics through Psycho-Analytical Snail Serum and Prototype II: The Institute for the Enrichment of Computer-Aided Post Gendered Prototypes on UVP's platform. Links for each film will be live for 24 hours on Saturday, April 18, and Sunday, April 19.

The Department of Transmedia in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University will host a live online artist's talk Tuesday, April 28, at 3:30 p.m. EST, with UVP commissioned artists Doireann O'Malley. This event is part of the Transmedia Lecture Colloquium Lecture Series. Join us online to engage this challenge of normative gender concepts.

O'Malley's Prototype,s a multi-screen film installation, interrogates trans semiotics through psychoanalytic practices, speculative technologies, and live-action role-playing, addressing wider philosophical concerns relating to biology, gender embodiment, sexuality, utopianism, and biomolecular advancement in human evolution.

Of this work, O'Malley says, "The destabilization of the gender binary is a threat to the construction of western dualistic philosophical binary systems and is at play to deconstruct much more than simply gender. I think it's problematic to speak about what it means to be transgender as it is obviously a subjective and individual experience for people. I am interested in exploring this occurrence of unstable or shifting genders."

Doireann O'Malley is a visual artist originally from Ireland, based in Berlin since 2009. They use dreaming, writing, moving, filmmaking, 3D imaging and Virtual Reality through collaborative practices to explore the psychological and social implications of feminist technofuturism. O'Malley received the prestigious Berlin Art Prize 2018 and is the recipient of several grants. Recent solo exhibitions include The Visitors (2019) Stadium, Berlin; Prototypes (2018) Dublin City Gallery, The Huge Lane, Ireland; Disappearances (2015) Image Movement, Berlin. Recent group presentations include G?teborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (2019); Invisible Realness (2019) PS120, Berlin; Body Works (2019) Sopot State Gallery.

A Letter From Light Work''s Director

Dear Light Work community,

I hope that you and your loved ones are keeping safe and healthy during this challenging time. So much has occurred in the world and here at Light Work since we made the difficult but important decision to close to the public and suspend our exhibitions and residency programs on March 13.

While we have been closed to the public during this time and most our staff have been working from home already, our lab services have remained operational so that artists around the globe could still order prints, scans, and other image work from our facility over the past week. In order to take the next step of extra precautions to protect our employees and the public from the spread of COVID-19, we have decided to only accept service lab orders that can be accomplished remotely by our staff starting today, March 20. While New York State has ordered this change to go into effect on Sunday, we feel it''s best to take action now.

We do not currently know when it will be safe to fully re-open our facility. Until then, while we can provide quotes and accept orders for printing and scanning, the completion of some of these projects requiring certain equipment may only be able to take place once we return to having our facility open. We encourage everyone to stay in touch about projects nonetheless, including planning ahead for Summer and Fall. Light Work Lab is also offering one-on-one online sessions for those looking to further their photography education during this time. During this period of closure, we are working with each of our staff to develop flexible work-from-home schedules and plan to continue to pay all full and part-time hourly staff their usual wages, to help ease the burden of these unforeseen circumstances. We will continue to closely monitor the situation and COVID-19 guidelines provided by Onondaga County officials, Governor Cuomo, the New York State Department of Health, and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, with the safety of our staff and community as our top priority.

With everyone having more time at home, we encourage you to explore our online offerings, including our history of exhibitions, portfolios of past artists-in-residence, our expansive online Collection (featuring over 4,000 works to browse) and Urban Video Project's Insights, (a great collection of UVP exhibition documentation, mixed with clips of exhibited works and the artists'' own reflections).

The series begins with photographer and filmmaker Hannah Price. A moderated Q&A follows her remote talk Project Less. Price's practice comprises photography and film. She uses her work to document relationships, race politics, and misperception. She has received international recognition for her photo project City of Brotherly Love (2009-2012), a series on the men who catcalled her on the streets of Philadelphia.

The second lecture is with photographer Irina Rozovsky. Rozovsky believes there is something to photograph most anywhere and considers the camera a third eye. For years, she has made pictures by wandering in far-flung places. She has explored questions of migration, diaspora, rootlessness, and personal versus political freedom in Cuba, Israel, and former Yugoslavia. Rozovsky is based in Athens, Georgia.

The third lecture is with photographer S. Billie Mandle. Mandle conducts extensive research into the histories and politics of each of her subjects, which include a home for refugees, a hospital for the mentally ill, and the California Missions. She will talk about her recent book, Reconciliation, made over ten years of photographing confessionals throughout the United States. The book offers a queer perspective on religious spaces as they relate to the fallibility of faith and forgiveness.

The fourth and final series event is with photographer Lesley A. Martin. She will be in conversation with acclaimed photographer Penelope Umbrico. Martin is publisher of The PhotoBook Review, a newsprint journal dedicated to the photobook. Her writing on photography has appeared in publications that include American Photo, Aperture, FOAM, and Lay Flat. She has edited more than seventy-five photography books. Martin is creative director at Aperture Foundation.

In Solidarity Installation Closes for Projection Equipment Upgrade

Wednesday, July 8, at midnight, Light Work's Urban Video Project installation, In Solidarity, will go dark to make way for a long-awaited upgrade of their projection equipment. The culmination of years of fundraising and planning, the upgrade will make it possible for Urban Video Project to continue their mission to present urgent, thought-provoking work of media artists from around the world at their outdoor projection site at the Everson Museum of Art. With the contributions of Black photographers and photojournalist allies, UVP's act of solidarity has appeared each night for more than three weeks, offering viewers on the plaza an opportunity to witness the passions, frustrations, and determination driving the protest movement in Syracuse, New York. We extend our appreciation to the many photographers and artists who made images of the marches, rallies, and actions organized by Last Chance For Change, Raha Syracuse and YouthCuseBLM. The photographs and labor of Cheriyln Beckles, Mylz Blake, Jaleel Campbell, Kollina Dacko, Dennis Fernando, Eric Derachio Jackson Jr. and Maranie Staab chronicled the protesters'' unwavering commitment to condemn and root out police violence, systemic racism, and state-sanctioned violence.

Those who journeyed to the museum's plaza provided powerful feedback that reaffirms art as an indomitable tool in challenging injustice and inequity. "We appreciate the work of the photographers covering the movement in Syracuse and the Urban Video Project's willingness to have a solidarity display," said Rannette Releford, director of Syracuse's the Citizen Review Board (CRB), which hears complaints about police misconduct. "This was a perfect example of how important this movement is to our community and the choices an organization can make to show support. We appreciate being showcased in the In Solidarity installation because accountability and transparency are necessary to improve relations. You cannot have one without the other, and for far too long, neither has been a top priority to the Syracuse Police Department."

Having visited the exhibition on numerous occasions for documentation purposes, UVP communications coordinator Cjala Surratt said she was struck by the installation's ability to create space to empathize and mourn in a large public site. "It's quiet there," said Surratt. "The rhythmic sounds of the fountain encourage introspection and stillness. There I had permission, one I had not extended myself before to grieve. To grieve with the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, David McAtee, and Tony McDad, and with so many others in America's Black communities, who have suffered devastating losses and live in fear because of racism, violence, and injustice."

At the launch of this collaborative project, UVP director Anneka Herre spoke of the location's importance. "It is not a coincidence that UVP's Everson Museum site is proximate to where many of the protests are happening along the downtown law enforcement and legal corridor. This corridor of civic buildings was created through an urban renewal program that displaced a population of Black citizens who are also disproportionately affected by the criminal justice system. It is incumbent upon us to use this site in ways that amplify the voices of those who are doing the difficult work of making change and to add our own voice to that call."

Urban Video Project again extends our gratitude to everyone who stood in the presence of this installation, either in solitude or gathered in small numbers, to consider the reckoning that is now underway in our city, state, and nation.

We are excited to announce In Solidarity will be part of Light Work's 2020-21 exhibition calendar for those who did not get the opportunity to see the installation in person at the plaza. This body of work will be on view in the Hallway Gallery at Light Work later this fall. Keep an eye on our website and social media platforms for updates regarding online programming running in conjunction with these forthcoming exhibitions. The show will run concurrently with Matthew Connor's exhibition in Kathleen O. Ellis Gallery. Nothing is more important to us than your health and safety, and we take seriously our responsibility as a civic institution that serves the public good. In order to protect the well-being of our staff and visitors, and following guidance from local, state, and federal authorities regarding measures that best promote public health, Light Work will temporarily close to the public. We will suspend access to Kathleen O. Ellis and Hallway Galleries, the Light Work Lab, and all workshops and classes beginning Friday, March 13, at 5 p.m. The facility will remain closed through Monday, March 30, 2020.

To be clear, there have been no confirmed cases of the coronavirus among our employees. Our goal is to do everything we can to help flatten the curve of this outbreak in Central New York and within our global community. We will continue to monitor developments with COVID-19 and regularly reassess this temporary closure. Please note the Service Lab is still operational. For a limited time, Urban Video Project will share virtual access to Doireann O'Malley's Prototypes, a feature film that combines elements of O'Malley's multichannel works, Prototype I: Quantum Leaps in Trans Semiotics through Psycho-Analytical Snail Serum and Prototype ll: The Institute on UVP's platform. The link will go live on Saturday, April 18 at midnight and stay live until Sunday, April 19 at 11:59 p.m. EST. Join us online to engage this challenge of normative gender concepts.

O'Malley's Prototypes series interrogates trans semiotics through psychoanalytic practices, speculative technologies, and live-action role-playing, addressing wider philosophical concerns relating to biology, gender embodiment, sexuality, utopianism, and biomolecular advancement in human evolution.

Doireann O'Malley will present an artist talk and live Q&A on Tuesday, April 28. The live Q&A portion will begin at 3:30 p.m. This event is presented in collaboration with the Syracuse University Transmedia Department Colloquium.

"Prototypes is an immersive experience featuring sweeping cinematographic shots of Berlin's bold modernist architecture alongside endless parks and pristine lakes framed by rich summer verdure. The production values are high. Elegantly lit domestic interiors, concrete-grey institutional settings, and the bodies that inhabit them, are made to seem immaculate. This is the backdrop for a seamless dream-like narrative, depicting scenes from the fictional lives of a number of non-binary and transgender protagonists." - Thomas Bulter, paper visual art

These events are held in conjunction with the exhibition Doireann O'Malley: New Maps of Hyperspace_Test_01, which was commissioned by Light Work for UVP to be the first exhibition-making use of UVP 360, which will allow members of the public to control the projection using their phones.

Doireann O'Malley is a visual artist originally from Ireland, based in Berlin since 2009. They use dreaming, writing, moving, filmmaking, 3D imaging and Virtual Reality through collaborative practices to explore the psychological and social implications of feminist technofuturism. O'Malley received the prestigious Berlin Art Prize 2018 and is the recipient of several grants. Recent solo exhibitions include The Visitors (2019) Stadium, Berlin; Prototypes (2018) Dublin City Gallery, The Huge Lane, Ireland; Disappearances (2015) Image Movement, Berlin. Recent group presentations include G?teborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (2019); Invisible Realness (2019) PS120, Berlin; Body Works (2019) Sopot State Gallery.

Light Work Lab Resumes Printing and Scanning Services for Photographers

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Light Work Lab closed to the public in early March and then went on to move classes, workshops, and one-on-one training sessions entirely online. During the closure, Lab staff and our members worked remotely to imagine fresh ways to stay engaged and offer support to our photography community.

After months of limiting our service activity, we are very excited that Light Work Lab can again offer our full line of services to artists. This includes printing, scanning, and retouching. Visit www.lightwork.org/services for a complete list of service rates and stock papers.

The steady hum of printers and scanners are cause for celebration! Light Work''s global community of photographers will again have access to exceptional museum quality archival printing services and the support of our knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff. As added incentives during this difficult time and until further notice, we are extending all Lab memberships that were valid when we closed our doors, as well as offering FREE service memberships for new and returning clients. Our prices are already among the lowest in the industry, but we want to keep our services as accessible as possible to make it even easier for you to work with us from anywhere in the world. This is an excellent opportunity to begin or return to projects that may have stalled due to the pandemic.

The Lab team has worked diligently to institute cleaning routines for the facility. All safety protocols are in place, including protective partitions, social distancing signage, hand sanitizer stations, and free distribution of masks to staff. Even while masked and six feet apart, the team is happy to get back to producing creative projects with artists from afar. "We have spent the last month preparing and recalibrating, testing out new materials, and implementing social distancing rules to make our space safer to use for our own staff," said Light Work lab manager Dan Boardman. "We are ready for your printing, scanning, and retouching inquiries. It is very rewarding for us to work with artists from all around the world, and we are looking forward to helping you with your next project."

Does this mean we are open to the public and visitors can come into the facility for DIY printing and scanning? Unfortunately, no. Though the number of new cases across Syracuse and New York State are low, we are proceeding cautiously regarding a physical re-opening of the Lab and exhibition spaces to the public, and we must wait for clearances from New York State and Syracuse University in order to do so. Following the best practices of arts institutions nationwide, Light Work will institute clear safety guidelines when we do re-open in the future, and we will be sure to keep you posted on developments as we have news to share regarding those next steps.

We appreciate your generosity and support during this time! We look forward to the company of lab members, students, and gallery patrons down the road. Until then, we encourage you to engage with Light Work's programs through our social media platforms, online educational opportunities, permanent Collection website, Contact Sheet subscription program, and episodes of the Light Work Podcast.

Dear Light Work Community,

It has been an exhausting, sorrowful, and deeply troubling week. Whether you are here in Syracuse, in cities and communities across the United States, or watching from afar the unrest and outrage that the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis last week has provoked, know that we too are hurt and outraged.

We too ask how many Black men and women must die at the hands of the police before this ends. We too ask what "accountability" would look like. In our own city, police have used tear gas against our young people and physically attacked a respected older photojournalist during a demonstration. Across the country this past week, there have been more than one hundred incidents in which police have targeted and attacked journalists carrying cameras.

We will not be silent. We stand in solidarity with #BlackLivesMatter and join those in our city, across the nation, and around the globe that continue to fight against racial oppression, violence, and discrimination. At our Urban Video Project (UVP) site on the facade of the Everson Museum of Art, we've projected a series of photographs of protests by photographer Maranie Staab along with a few quotes that resonate with this moment in history, including those of Angela Davis: "You have to act as if it were possible to radically transform the world. And you have to do it all the time."

It is necessary that we all do our part to make this nation better and demand accountability for the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Tony McDade, Breonna Taylor, and so many individuals who should still be here today. It feels as though we are grappling with multiple pandemics, and the tragic losses are difficult to comprehend.

Light Work has always made it our core mission to serve and support emerging, under-represented, and diverse artists in those we select for programs, including exhibitions, residencies, and grants. Events unfolding at this moment have reinforced to us that all such efforts are imperfect and that we must also always strive to do better. We must all commit to this, and you have our commitment. We will seek more broadly to exist as a safe space for artists and communities in new ways and we ask for your partnership. This may require us to cross uncharted waters together but we know as artists and members of the community that we can not afford to go back.

With great excitement, Light Work's Urban Video Project will host My Southside and City, August 28 - 29, 2020. In partnership with The Stand Newspaper, the two-day exhibition features images by 2020 Photo Contest winners, including Emily Baxter, Jessica Dapson, Hilary Donohue, Justin Fogarty, Kathe Harrington, DJ Igelsrud, Jayson McDowell, Travis Owens, Sheila Quinell, Kristi Russo, Maranie Staab and Nadine H. Wodarczyk. The exhibition will be on view at UVP''s outdoor architectural projection site on the facade of the Everson Museum of Art at 401 Harrison Street, Friday and Saturday, from dusk until 11pm.

Each summer, The Stand Newspaper sponsors its annual Photo Walk, encouraging community members to explore, meet neighbors, and document the South Side in photos. This summer, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the organizers reimaged the competition to accommodate social distancing guidelines.

"We didn't want to stop documenting everyday life," says The Stand director Ashley Kang. "In discussing with our past Photo Walk leaders, we worked to figure out a way to capture Syracuse in photos. How is life continuing despite the coronavirus; how are children coping; changes made for social distancing. And as we discussed planning, George Floyd was murdered, and protests began nationwide. We also wanted to capture how Syracuse responded."

Urban Video Project will host Horizons: New Film Out of Central New York, September 3 - 5, 2020. In partnership with the Innovative Group of Central New York, the three-day showcase highlights films by 2019 CNY Short Film Competition winners, including Issack Cintr?n, Carlton Daniel, Kathryn Ferentchak, and Charles Stulck. The exhibition will be on view at UVP''s outdoor architectural projection site on the facade of the Everson Museum of Art at 401 Harrison Street, Thursday through Saturday, from dusk until 11pm.

"Exhibiting these works is an extension of our commitment to supporting emerging artists," says Urban Video Project director Anneka Herre. "We are excited to offer this unique public platform to graduates of film programs from area universities, including Syracuse University and SUNY Oswego. We extend our congratulations to this year's award recipients and wish them success with their future projects and careers."

The Central New York Short Film Competition is a juried program administered by Innovation Group of CNY Arts that supports promising young filmmakers who have recently graduated from an accredited film or media program in the CNY region. The Competition seeks to provide aspiring filmmakers with the resources and training necessary to develop and produce a professional short film in Central New York, which they can submit to festivals for critical and commercial consideration.

By drawing upon the unique cultural and geographic characteristics of the Central New York region, winning filmmakers explore a wide variety of storytelling perspectives. The Innovation Group of CNY Arts administers the Competition, now in its second year of operation. A grant from Empire State Development and the CNY Regional Economic Development Council supports the Competition. The CNY Arts in the Windows Program supports the screenings, in turn funded, in part, by the County of Onondaga and New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

Urban Video Project a multimedia public art initiative of Light Work and Syracuse University and an international venue for the public exhibition of video art, operating on the Connective Corridor cultural strip in Syracuse, N.Y. UVP Everson, UVP's flagship site, is located at 401 Harrison St. in downtown Syracuse, is made possible through a generous partnership with the Everson Museum of Art. The permanent public art venue includes an all-seasons, extra-large venue projector and stereo sound system. All UVP programs are made possible through the generous support of the New York State Council on the Arts.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has constrained our ability to physically host artists in Syracuse, Light Work has responded innovatively to offer continued support in the form of remote residencies. The remote residency experience support artists in developing their artistic practice from their home or designated studio space. In addition to the stipend, artists will benefit from technical, professional, and creative support, as well as the extraordinary freedom to determine their own residency's shape and timing. Residency participants can use the month to pursue their projects: photographing, scanning, printing, editing for book projects, and working closely with our staff for feedback and conversation.

Steven Molina Contreras

Steven Molina Contreras was born in 1999 in San Salvador, El Salvador. He is an artist whose work addresses how immigrant families reclaim the land and images in which they are portrayed. Through a documentary, staged approach, he recontextualizes the different narratives that exist within his images and evocatively pairs them to reveal an emotional truth to himself and his collaborators-his family. Molina Contreras holds a BFA in Photography and Related Media from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). Selected press includes Aperture, booooooom, Humble Arts Foundation, and Puss Puss Mag. Selected commissions include The Guardian, The New York Times, The New Yorker, TIME, and The Wall Street Journal. He has exhibited his work in group shows in New York City and New Jersey. He has lectured at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Marble Hills Camera Club, and the School of Visual Arts. He currently lives and works in Long Island and New York City.

Marion Wilson

Marion Wilson investigates ecology and landscape to foster a closer connection between self and place. Through photographs, painting, and installations she explores our relations with nature at a time when extreme climate change threatens ecosystems, livelihoods, and communities. Wilson's numerous exhibitions include Cheryl Pelavin Fine Arts and Sculpture Center (New York City), Dorsky Gallery (New York City), Exit Art (New York City), Frederieke Taylor (New York City), Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center (Buffalo), Herbert Johnson Museum (Cornell University), Kasia Kay Art Projects (New Orleans), New Museum of Contemporary Art (New York City), Shroeder Romero Gallery (New York City), SPACES (Cleveland), SCOPE Miami/Art Basel (Miami). Wilson's funded residency awards include International Studio Program (NYSCA and Elizabeth Foundation), McColl Center for Art and Innovation (Charlotte, NC), Millay Colony for the Arts' Nancy Graves Award, and Sculpture Space (Utica, NY). Wilson graduated from Wesleyan University, and holds an MA from Columbia University as well as an MFA from the University of Cincinnati.
