Literacy is power, but words mean nothing without action behind them.
If you can''t view properly or are on a mobile device, click here
News You Can Use
Dear Harper:
Yesterday, one of our Twitter followers asked us, "Do #BlackLivesMatter?"
The answer is, unequivocally, yes.
We know words have power. What we say, how we say it, and to whom—all of it carries weight on a so-called normal day.
But these days, when the world is reeling not only from a global pandemic but also from yet another horrific act of police brutality against a member of the black community, words matter even more.
So, let''s be clear:
ILA is an anti-racist organization that stands for justice and equality.
We aim to embed racial and ethnic equity in everything we do.
We elevate the voices of those struggling to be heard.
And we do it all in service of you, your students, and the field of literacy education.
We are facing an uncertain future, unclear on what schools will look like next year, let alone the next decade.
What is certain is that sweeping systemic changes are required to ensure equity and inclusivity for all.
That''s why we continue to invest in evidence-based approaches to social-emotional learning and trauma-responsive instruction.
We''re committed to providing professional learning for educators to guide them in this work. To supporting critical research that will help improve outcomes for every child, everywhere. To influencing educational policy that will disrupt and dismantle systems of oppression in every corner of the world.
Words don''t mean anything without the actions behind them.
What will you do today? How will you be an agent of change?
Let us know how ILA can support your efforts.

The term
science of reading
(SOR) is often invoked in discussions regarding literacy research, policy, and practice. But what exactly does SOR encompass—and why is it so difficult to define?
During this webinar, we''ll take an expansive look at SOR and attempt to demystify the controversy surrounding it. Speakers representing a wide swath of perspectives will draw on classic and emerging research to address key topics at the heart of this debate.
The fast-paced format will include short keynotes from
P. David Pearson
and
Nicole Patton Terry,
a fireside chat between
Timothy Shanahan
and
Timothy Rasinski,
and a practitioner panel facilitated by
Reading Research Quarterly''s
Amanda P. Goodwin.
Additional presenters include
Kymyona Burk
Gina Cervetti
James S. Kim
Brad B. Nguyen
Ernesto Ortiz
Sam Rawal
Join us as we examine research on reading instruction and discuss effective, evidence-based practices to improve student outcomes. If you''re interested in the applications (and implications) of the science of reading instruction, this event is one you won''t want to miss.

Adults who habitually read find personal enjoyment and benefit from it. Unfortunately, too many young people report reading experiences that disconnect them from reading joy or discourage its development. We can teach young people to become proficient, critical readers without damaging their reading interest and engagement in the process.
In this webinar, Donalyn Miller, award-winning Texas teacher and author, describes some conditions, rituals, and instructional opportunities that engage young people with reading and set them on the path to joyful reading for a lifetime. A live Q&A is included.
This event is free for ILA members. Purchase a one-year online membership for

Know. Then Go.
Earlier this week, we announced that the ILA 2020 Conference, scheduled to take place this October in Columbus, OH, has been canceled due to the impact of COVID-19.
The fact that this was a necessary decision doesn''t make it any less difficult. We share the disappointment of program presenters, volunteer leaders, and the thousands of participants who—let''s face it—are what makes ILA conferences so special in the first place.
The theme selected for this year''s conference was "Shaping the Future of Literacy: 2020 Vision." There was no possible way for us to have foreseen this future, let alone prepare for it.
As for what''s to come, one thing is certain: The way we teach, and the way in which students learn, will never be the same. Your needs have changed—and are still changing—and to support you best, we need to change as well.
We''ve already begun rolling out a new slate of professional development offerings, including
ILA at Home,
a series of hour-long webinars with leaders such as Timothy Shanahan and Donalyn Miller. Each is available free to ILA members; nonmembers can register for $45 or join ILA for less than the cost of a single webinar (and gain access to the entire series in the process!). Visit literacyworldwide.org/digitalevents for more information.
Next month, we will be unveiling a progressive model for professional learning being designed specifically for a digital platform. It''s immersive, interactive, and responsive. We believe it''s the future of PD.
We will continue to weather this storm together, and as you enter the period of post-COVID recovery that''s to come, we''ll support you every step of the way.
Stay safe—and stay connected.

We''re a little over two weeks away from the start of ILA Next, a new professional learning experience that provides a
timely, relevant, and responsive (and jam-packed!) program
designed to work with your busy schedule.
"What exactly
is
ILA Next?" you may be wondering, "and what
exactly
will I get for my $99* registration?" Glad you asked! Here''s some information that will (hopefully) answer your questions—and demonstrate why this digital event is well worth the investment.
ILA Next is a four-week event with a flexible time commitment. Log on for one 90-minute session, workshop, or discussion group three days a week, then enhance that learning by visiting our virtual Exhibitor Showcase (think digital exhibit hall) and taking advantage of the additional Learning Lab sessions.
If there''s a day or even a week you''re unable to attend live, no problem! On-demand recordings will be available within five days of each event.
Here''s a snapshot of what to expect from a typical week** of ILA Next.
Saturday:
9:00 AM–10:30 AM ET | Select a 90-minute Main Stage Session featuring all-star speakers such as Doug Fisher and Nancy Frey, Brian Cambourne, Debra Crouch, Gholdy Muhammad, A.S. King, Nic Stone, and more.
10:30 AM–11:30 AM ET | Visit the Exhibitor Showcase (think digital exhibit hall). It''s open 24/7, but during this hour, you''ll have the opportunity to interact live with publishers, PD organizations, service providers, and more.
11:30 AM–12:55 PM ET | Get even more PD by participating in a Learning Lab. A total of 14 will be offered throughout the month.
Tuesday:
6:30 PM–8:00 PM ET | This is when you''ll log on for your Pathway Workshop—the cornerstone of the ILA Next experience. Dig into a topic with educators such as Molly Ness, Frances Gonzalez-Garcia, Kylene Beers and Robert E. Probst.
Thursday:
6:30 PM–8:00 PM | You''ve learned a lot this week! Now it''s time to ask questions and interact with speakers and fellow attendees at your Office Hours discussion group, which follow the same pathway as your workshop series.
Four weeks of shorter, more conveniently scheduled sessions that don''t keep you locked on a laptop for 12-hour stretches? On-demand access to whatever you can''t attend live? Informal networking opportunities that also give you access to speakers? Yes, please!
Even better?
Clock hours are available
upon request and your registration offers even more flexibility by providing
unlimited access through January 31, 2021.

Making a Case for Reading Joy Adults who habitually read find personal enjoyment and benefit from it. Unfortunately, too many young people report reading experiences that disconnect them from reading joy or discourage its development. We can teach young people to become proficient, critical readers without damaging their reading interest and engagement in the process.
In this webinar—the latest in the new ILA at Home
series of digital events—Donalyn Miller, award-winning Texas teacher and author, describes some conditions, rituals, and instructional opportunities that engage young people with reading and set them on the path to joyful reading for a lifetime. A live Q&A is included.
This event is free for ILA members.Purchase a one-year online membership for
less than the cost of registration
and you''ll gain access to this and future webinars at no cost.

ILA Next: Digital by Design
COVID-19 canceled nearly every face-to-face professional development event well into 2021. No doubt your inbox is full of promos for virtual replacements. How do you know which to choose (if any)?
Literacy educators should look no further than ILA Next. ILA Next is 100% digital by design—not an alternative that shoehorns an in-person program into an online platform at basically the same price.
So how does ILA Next compare?
Other Virtual Events
Full-day programming on back-to-back days, leaving you stuck to a screen sunup to sundown
Sessions selected from proposals submitted up to a year prior, long before there was a hint of the challenges 2020 would bring
Live sessions offered when you''re teaching so you have to choose between participating or your students
On-demand access limited to three months or less, with some events shutting down access in as little as two weeks
Registration as high as face-to-face-conference rates
ILA Next
Sessions that run 90 minutes or less, spread out over the course of a month. You still get more than 36 hours of programming, but at a pace that doesn''t completely disrupt your day-to-day schedule.
Speakers are still developing their sessions, adapting and adjusting to make the program timely, relevant, and responsive to the needs of today''s literacy educators.
Live sessions concentrated on Saturday mornings and two weeknights*—no sub required!
Sessions available on demand—watch any as many times as you want or binge it all in January because you have unlimited access through January 31, 2021.
Registration starts at just $99 for ILA members; nonmembers who join before registering save more than $100 total.
Sound too good to be true? It''s not! ILA Next kicks off Saturday, October 3, featuring speakers such as Debra Crouch, Brian Cambourne, and Dan Santat, not to mention Cornelius Minor, Ernest Morrell, and Jasmyn Wright.
THIS is the event you won''t want to miss.
You bring the device; we''ll provide the PD.

Dear Harper,
There''s still time to nominate a colleague (or yourself!) for ILA''s next 30 Under 30 list.
Our 30 Under 30 honorees exemplify the very best in literacy education and advocacy, such as
Gerald Dessus
(2019), a cultural studies educator in Philadelphia, PA, who uses literacy as the foundation of the social justice curricula he has designed for multiple schools
Cody Miller
(2019), a former ELA teacher and current SUNY professor who focuses on the ways young adult literature influences students'' identities and views of the world
In?s Guillorme
(2015), an English teacher in Spain who prioritizes cultural competence through global connections that promote creativity, innovation, and exploration
Do you know an educator or advocate like Gerald, Cody, or In?s who goes above and beyond to serve their students and communities? Someone who shares our mission to make literacy accessible for all and is doing extraordinary work that you think should be recognized?
Help us share the incredible stories of these changemakers. Nominations must be received by 11:59 p.m. ET on
