Dear Noah,
Happy Labor Day to all! It may be a three-day weekend, but at Long Wharf Theatre we are charging
ahead with our groundbreaking new season, One City, Many Stages. We are delighted to announce that
the kickoff event will be held on Wednesday, September 16 at 6PM EDT. Our artistic director, Jacob
Padr?n, will be delivering a keynote address providing sneak peeks into the season's offerings, including
plays, pop-up events, a fashion show, and our new membership program that makes supporting Long
Wharf Theatre easier than ever. Sharece Sellem, Ryan J. Haddad, Steven Sapp and Mildred Ruiz-Sapp of
UNIVERSES, and other One City collaborators will join the broadcast, making this a can't-miss event.
For over fifty years, we have been a vital member of your community, and starting this fall, we invite you
to become one of ours. By becoming a member-supported theatre, we'll offer our friends and
supporters a plethora of perks while making theatre patronage truly affordable at $10 a month. We
hope you'll join us in becoming members of our theatre which means so much to all of us. Membership
will launch on Monday, September 14, and we'll be in touch with details of what's included and how to
enroll soon.
We're delighted to share with you the first event of our season, which is the product of a year's long
investment in New Haven's immigrant communities and collaborative storytelling through the
performing arts. The New Haven Play Project will have two events, showcasing how arts and activism
can support each other. The first event is Islam & Muslims: Cultural Sensitivity and Humility Training, a
workshop led by chaplain and educator, Aida Mansoor on Thursday, September 24 at 7PM. Then, on
Friday, September 25 at 7PM, we will premiere the eponymous feature-length film, New Haven Play
Project, followed by livestreamed talkback sessions from contributing storytellers and artists. Together
these events, done in partnership with the Muslim Coalition of CT, Storytellers New Haven, and
Sanctuary Kitchen, will foster greater understanding of Muslim, immigrant, and refugee experiences
from storytellers and performers whose distinct journeys to New Haven will engage us all in creative
placemaking.
Finally, we are excited to reveal one of the personal journeys that led to the formation of One City,
Many Stages and its unprecedented accessibility, that of our Director of Marketing and
Communications, King Kenney. From football to vaudeville, and from shut up and play, to speak up and
plays, Kenney's "Theatre is for Everyone" is the newest long-form post on our blog and the perfect read
to start the week.
Sunny wishes for your day, and more soon,
Long Wharf Theatre
