Come Volunteer With Us This Summer!

Lotus House is in need of committed volunteers to help with fun summer activities for our kids! Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many summer camps and other summer programming are either uncertain about opening or have very limited spots. In an effort to ensure that our children are engaged in fun activities and that our moms receive some additional support during these difficult times, we have come up with a Lotus House summer programming schedule and need your support to make this summer special at Lotus House!

We will be hosting educational activities, arts & crafts, cooking classes, exercise and more, Monday-Thursday from 10am-4pm.

In order to volunteer, you will need to do the following:

Complete our Intake Health Questionnaire
Commit to volunteering for one full day at least once a week.
Complete a background screening. (More information will be provided).
Fill out our volunteer agreement form.
Volunteers committing to several days of service will have additional on-boarding steps. (More information will be provided).

The pandemic has affected every aspect of our programming and operations, requiring added measures to ensure the safety and health of the 500+ women, youth and children we shelter and that of our front line team members. This year, Give Miami Day has provided expanded opportunities to show your support.

Early Giving: From 11.16.20 - 11.18.20, you can take advantage of early giving and process your life changing donation ahead of Give Miami Day.

Give Miami Day: The official day of giving will be on 11.19.20 and The Miami Foundation has provided additional bonus dollars through Power Hours. Lotus House is part of the "Health & Wellness" Power Hour at 9am. Please consider making your donation at that time, allowing us to qualify for additional bonus funds so critically needed this year.

New Life, New Beginnings, Love and Hope at Lotus House

Though the class of 2020 celebrated this special milestone under very different circumstances, our youth were surrounded by Lotus House family and friends as they looked back on their journey and forward to a bright future. A special thank you to Miami Dade County Public Schools Superintendent, Alberto Carvalho, for personally offering words of encouragement and support during our commencement celebration. The menu was curated by our youth and made with love in our David and Leila Centner Culinary Center. The Salty Donut, Peace Love World and I Am Queens LLC contributed sweet treats, custom shirts and decor, helping to make our celebration so much more special. The afternoon was filled with hope for the future of our youth and our community in their promised realized.

More than 200 newborns will some day call Lotus House their first home! Baby showers are special celebrations for us, reminding us that new life will soon blossom, and with love and compassion, into who they are meant to be. Our recent celebration "showered" new and expecting moms and babies with much needed supplies, gifts, and love. Food and balloons were generously provided by House of Mac and Noelle Company. As we all struggle to find some normalcy during these unprecedented times, we were reminded that, together, we can change and save lives putting children first.

Lotus House weeps in the tragedy of lost life, opportunity and inequities in our country stemming from deep historical wounds and persistent ongoing gender and racial discrimination and inequity. Over the past 15 years, we have sheltered thousands of high special needs women and children, most of whom are persons of color lacking meaningful access to safe affordable housing, child care, education, health care, economic opportunity, and social and economic justice. Lotus House is committed to advancing the status of women and children, providing sanctuary with deep therapeutic supports to heal and enriched resources to reclaim lives marked by violence, poverty and discrimination, so that they may blossom into who they are meant to be. We advocate for enlightened public and social policies and best practices to bring an end to homelessness and are committed to solutions that provide racial, gender, social and economic justice for all. Meaningful financial security and affordable, safe housing must be assured for everyone in our country, and in times of inevitable transition, it is essential for trauma informed, enriched shelter with deep protective factors, education, tools and resources, such as those we provide at Lotus House, to be available for everyone. A safe home and supportive shelter are as fundamental to the pursuit of life, liberty, prosperity and happiness as food, education, and health care. At Lotus House, we are committed to bringing an end to homelessness and a world in which safety, dignity, respect, truly equal opportunity, compassion and love reign.

Help us prepare holiday gift bags for our
little ones!

Starting December 17th, we will be working around the clock as we sort, organize and assemble toy gift bags for over 250 children who call Lotus House home nightly and we need your help!

Using the link below, sign up to help us prepare holiday bags. Everyone interested in volunteering must complete the sign in sheet and we do have a 20 person max per session.

In light of COVID-19, we will take every necessary precaution to advance the safety of all those involved. When you arrive, your temperature will be taken and you will be provided with a KN95 mask which must be worn at all times.

Advancing Health and Safety at
Lotus Village

The health and safety of the 490+ women, youth and children we shelter nightly has been our top priority since the start of the pandemic. Investment in new technology, increased sanitation measures and protocols, informative signage placed around the facilities and continued enforcement of mask wearing and social distancing has allowed us to continue offering life changing shelter and programming in a safe environment.

As we continue to see the impacts of the pandemic on vulnerable women, youth and children in our community, we urge you to support our COVID-19 relief fund so that we may continue to "shelter in" those with no refuge.

BioProtect
This antimicrobial surface protectant creates a shield on surfaces and makes them resistant to viruses (including COVID-19) and bacteria for up to 45 days. Areas of focus for these applications are high touch and high traffic areas such as elevators, door handles and similar surfaces.

Thermal Digital Temperature System
Upon entry into Lotus Village, an infrared camera system quickly scans each person's temperature and alerts front desk staff when the temperature exceeds a healthy threshold. This contactless system allows our team to complete regular temperature screenings of all who enter our facilities from a safe distance

Mandatory Masks & Social Distancing
All guests, staff, and visitors are required to wear masks while on site. Plexiglass guards are installed at the front desk, in our Healing Hands Salon and our Culinary Center to increase protection. Social distancing markers and educational materials can be found throughout our facilities in addition to increased spacing between tables in communal spaces.

Sanuvox UV Disinfecting Towers
With an investment in four UV light sanitizing and disinfecting towers, we are able to efficiently disinfect communal spaces and residential units during turnover. Like those used in healthcare settings for patient and surgery rooms, these towers sanitize 99.99% of the space.

Additional Health and Safety Measures

In addition to increased sanitation and disinfecting measures in place, high grade MERV 13 filters are installed throughout the facilities to help purify air. A new Community Health Team provides health screenings, COVID-19 testing and health linkages for guests.

Helping to Fight Hunger & Food Insecurity

As many of you know, Lotus House is situated in the heart of Overtown, Miami, one of the poorest neighborhoods in the country. Thanks to your donations, Lotus House is serving nearly 1,000 nutritious meals daily to the women, youth and children we shelter. Even as we are nourished, we are mindful that our neighborhood is suffering because so many have lost their livelihoods. Hunger and food insecurity are the tragic hallmarks of deep poverty in our neighborhood. Many of the food distribution sites across the county are "drive by," but few in our neighborhood have cars.

We have always cooked just a little bit more to provide extra meals for those in need who come to our door. As the economic impacts of the virus have grown more dire, more and more people from our neighborhood have been coming to us for help. So we knew our Lotus House team had to mobilize. And so, we reached out to community partners like Health in the Hood, Eat Clean, Feeding South Florida and Flipany, to name a few, and began organizing weekly food distributions of produce and groceries from an impromptu "farmers market" quickly organized in our 15th Street parking lot. Our free food market for those in need is "walk-up" to eliminate barriers. We are providing bags and boxes of donated groceries and pre-made meals three times a week at this point. Since this pandemic began, we have distributed over 1,700 prepared meals and 850 bags of groceries to the residents of Overtown - over 9,350 lbs of food! We are so grateful to all of you and our partners in this initiative, who have made it possible for us to feed so many in this time of great need.

Thank you for the outpouring of love and support over the past 24 hours! Given the uncertain economic climate everyone is facing, your support and donations mean so much to the women, youth, and children being sheltered by Lotus House. As the situation in our community evolves, we are staying positive and focusing on the needs of those we serve by continuing activities with our children, ensuring the health and safety of those we serve, and always, receiving your generous donations of essential shelter items, food, and supplies. Solving Food Insecurity Concerns During COVID-19

As we continue to adjust to what feels like our new normal, Lotus House remains pivotal in solving an important issue for those we serve: food insecurity. Racially and economically marginalized populations, like those sheltered at Lotus House, are at an extremely disproportionate risk for hunger, dietary inadequacies and associated health problems. As unemployment rises and financial security decreases, food insecurity and poor nutrition will become an even larger issue for those we serve in the coming months.

We are so thankful for all of the food donations that we have received in recent weeks as it helps support our goal of providing healthful and nutritious meals in our David and Leila Centner Culinary Center, which are key in uplifting and empowering bodies, minds, and spirits.

We continue to monitor updates from the School District knowing that the start to the 2020-2021 school year is still under much speculation. Even though we are unsure of how learning will be conducted, we know that Lotus House children will need our support, now more than ever, to ensure that they have the supplies they will need for a productive school year.

Our Kids Need Uniforms!

As we continue to prepare for the start of the 2020-2021 school year next week, we look to you for support of our 91 school aged children who will be navigating virtual schooling - a learning environment that presents unique hurdles for them. Our children will be asked to attend school at our Lotus Learning Pod in full uniforms, offering a sense of comfort and structure. Already at a higher disadvantage than their non-sheltered peers, this sense of normalcy is vital in supporting their educational success. In line with keeping this structured environment, many of the local schools are also asking students to wear their uniforms during online learning. We do not have enough uniforms and need your support in ensuring that all our children are ready for the first day of school!

The generosity we have received from our community has always gotten us through the toughest of times, your support through the pandemic has been no different. We continue to enhance and expand our services, knowing that our women, youth and children need it now more than ever - but it is not possible without you. Keeping Cool at Lotus Village!

Though this summer has been quite different for all of us, our team has continued to offer holistic programming for those we serve - helping to provide a sense of normalcy and certainty during a very uncertain time. Thanks to our amazing community partners , supporters and volunteers, our women and children are keeping cool as we celebrate the last few weeks of summer. With freshly squeezed berry lemonade, ice skating field trips, arts and crafts and ice cream truck Fridays, we are beating the August heat while continuing to practice guidelines meant to keep us all safe!

Dear Friends of Lotus House,

First, thank you for the many inquiries, expressions of concern and offers of help to Lotus House and its dedicated team in this time of need. We are coping like most of you, trying to make sure our "home" will be safe for the over 480 women, youth and children we shelter each night. Like you, we are stocking up on needed supplies (food, paper products, cleaning supplies, sanitizer, gloves, masks, higher grade air filters.the list feels endless) and are struggling to get everything we need. The only difference is we are juggling 226 households staying with us.

We have had to hire more staff to keep up with the demands of what is beginning to feel like a new normal and what may follow in its wake. Many volunteers have been pitching in to help us organize everything and implement enhanced cleaning and sanitizing protocols throughout Lotus Village - thank you!! More volunteers will be needed in the weeks to come - please reach out to our volunteer organizers at love@lotushouse.org if you or your group are interested.

We have new health screening tools at in-take. Some of our team will work remotely, though many essential personnel must continue to remain on-site, even and especially in the most difficult of circumstances, such as a full or partial quarantine. We are not there yet, but we are planning for the possibility to be sure. We are monitoring the Federal, State and local news sources, have put in place a "coronavirus emergency preparedness and response plan," and continue to update our plans and protocols, department by department, near daily. We are dedicated to do whatever it takes and pray we are up to the challenges ahead.

As many of you know, Lotus House was scheduled to host its annual Spring Gala and Benefit Art Auction - Putting Children First, on April 2nd at the Margulies Art Warehouse. In good times, this event is essential to our work. In these times, with the many unanticipated costs rising with each day passing, it is more important than ever. That said, we want to assure everyone''s safety, and as a result, we are postponing our event to a new date, namely September 10th. We apologize for this inconvenience and look forward to gathering in shared community and mission early this fall. THANK YOU to everyone who has so generously stepped up to purchase tickets and sponsor our annual fundraiser. For those who cannot attend this fall, we can offer refunds. Otherwise we look forward to seeing everyone and sponsorships are still available. The funds raised by this event are critical to the shelter's safety net for those who are amongst the most vulnerable in our community. We know, with this tumultuous economic landscape, homelessness will spike and so too the need for Lotus House to shelter even more women and children in need.

Help Lotus House''s little ones have the best Halloween ever!

October is already here, kicking off our favorite season at Lotus House- Fall!

As we make preparations for one of the most popular holidays at the Village, we need your support in ensuring that all of our women and children receive a Halloween costume for our annual celebration!

This has been a challenging year for everyone, but together, we can ensure that our women, youth and children are able to enjoy the fun and magic of Halloween!

We are in need of new and gently used costumes in ALL SIZES for adults & children
Please, no scary costumes or costumes that suggest violence. No swords, scary masks, etc.

We are also in need of candy in their original packaging. Opened bags of individually wrapped candy cannot be accepted.

Dear Friends, Lotus House needs your help please. It goes without saying, these are unprecedented times presenting unique challenges for us all. With a full house of 480+ women and children, public schools and childcare facilities closed, interruptions in supply chains of medical supplies, and the need for more meals, cleaning, sanitizing, protective gear and more, we are making a community-wide call for help. A day at Lotus Village

The last weeks have been filled with uncertainty as we have all tried to understand our new normal during this unprecedented time in our community and in our country. Inside the walls of Lotus Village are close to 500 women, youth and children and almost 100 team members, sharing not only the same space but the same fears and worries. Despite the many ways in which this pandemic has kept us apart and required us to remain socially distant, it has done something even greater - it has brought us together. A strong community with the same mission: To ensure the safety and health of the most vulnerable women, youth and children. From dedicated volunteers to local businesses who have been forced to close their doors, they are now opening their doors to us through donations of food, supplies and resources. It truly takes a village - thank you for being part of our village.

Honoring Our Volunteers

National Volunteer Month reminds us of the pivotal role that volunteers play in everything that we do at Lotus House. Now more than ever, their support has provided vital assistance to our daily operations and program support services, helping to provide a sense of normalcy for the women, youth and children who call Lotus Village home nightly.

Over the last month, we have had an amazing group of volunteers who have given of their time and resources and have set aside their own fears and concerns to ensure that those we shelter feel safe and cared for. Our volunteers have supported our efforts by hosting trainings on proper mask and glove usage, helping our culinary team serve over 1,000 meals daily, providing educational support for our children during our homeschooling program, assisting with cleaning and sanitizing efforts throughout the shelter, offering professional guidance on our COVID-19 response and preparedness plan and so much more. Now more than ever, we need your support in uplifting the lives of the most vulnerable in our community.

We are so grateful for our village of volunteers who have been unwavering in their support, generosity and love.

LAST CHANCE TO REQUEST PARITY IN FUNDING FOR LOTUS HOUSE!

The City of Miami budget being finalized at 5pm today does not provide sufficient funding for Lotus House to meet the needs of so many women, youth and children experiencing homelessness in our community. We have requested $450,000 in funding, equal to what the men''s shelters receive, but the new budget only has $100,000 slated for Lotus House. We are asking for parity in the city budget but need your help to ensure that our voices are heard!

First and foremost, we hope that this message finds you safe and healthy during these very uncertain and difficult times. As you know, we were forced to postpone our Spring Gala - our largest fundraising event of the year - originally scheduled for April. Though we had hoped to host our Children First Gala on September 10th, we have decided to postpone that date in light of the current increase of cases in our community. The safety and health of our guests, team members, volunteers and community at large are our top priority as we continue to navigate this very difficult landscape.

When we are able to regain some sense of normalcy and when it is safe to do so, we will be announcing a new date for our Children First Gala. We look forward to recognizing our amazing honorees, all who have been champions for our children in so many ways, and welcoming our village to the always breathtaking Margulies Warehouse in Wynwood. Thank you so much to all those who have sponsored the event and sent in words of continued support throughout the pandemic.

A Day at Lotus House

Even with the challenges facing the community, Lotus House is hard at work ensuring that our guests still have access to quality educational and programming activities that are so vital to the healing process. We have adjusted how we run these activities based on new health and safety protocols but are still providing the chance for our women and children to blossom into who they were meant to be.

Mask Making
Led by one of our guests, the women and children at the shelter have been learning to sew while making colorful and important personal protective gear.

Homeschooling at Lotus
Our children continue to pursue their educational goals with online learning, tutoring, and additional activities meant to engage their academic curiosity.

A favorite among our guests, farming in one of our gardens provides an opportunity to learn about farm-to-table and the importance of healthy eating.

Community Food Giveaway

We continue to provide weekly food distributions of prepared meals, produce, and groceries to the residents of Overtown. Currently, we have distributed over 1,050 grocery bags and 2,750 prepared meals- over 16,000 lbs of food!

Lotus Learning Pod

With the official announcement of virtual schooling at the start of the upcoming school year, Lotus House is preparing to offer a structured, supportive learning environment that caters to the special needs of our children. Approximately 90 school aged children, from kindergarten through high school, will benefit from our Lotus Learning Pod - providing intensive supports, resources and guidance as they navigate this new way of learning, one that presents unique hurdles for sheltered children.

Please consider supporting us in providing a sense of normalcy, while ensuring that they do not fall behind academically. There are several ways in which you can contribute to our Lotus Learning Pod!

Volunteer!

Virtual School Assistance: Volunteers assisting in this capacity will help our children navigate the online school portal system, provide support with assignments and work to ensure that their virtual school experience is successful.

Enrichment Programming: Volunteers assisting in this capacity will provide support for our enrichment programming made available to children of all ages, offering additional opportunities for healing, growth and learning. Programming support will include tutoring in all subjects, help with homework, providing assistance with activities hosted in "The Farm", supporting activities in our Arts & Activities Lab and Yoga & Meditation Room, helping with off site field trips and more.

College Prep: Volunteers assisting in this capacity will work closely with our high school students and help prepare them for college exams, assist with college applications and other required items in the pursuit of their higher education.

Best Holiday Season Yet - Because of You!

Though the holidays look quite different this year, here at Lotus Village, we have been able to celebrate the most uplifting holiday season yet thanks to the amazing generosity of our donors, volunteers and friends.
