Greetings Abigail,

Facebook is coming up with new ways to support users and businesses around the world during these turbulent times.

The latest initiative is a new Support Small Business sticker for placing in your Instagram stories. On the IG app, tap the camera, create your story, then tap the little sticker icon and you''ll add the @mention of the local/small business you wish to spotlight. (I recommend doing a quick search to get the right account name first, before creating your story.)

Instagram states, "To give people an easy way to show their love for small businesses, we're introducing the new Support Small Business sticker on Instagram. When people use the sticker in Instagram Stories, their story will automatically appear in a shared Instagram story, so more people can discover more small businesses."

Appearing in that shared Instagram story definitely brings more visibility. I used the sticker for a couple of my favorite local businesses and saw quite a spike in views!

The Support Small Business sticker is also available for Facebook stories, but it doesn''t seem to allow for the actual @mention of SMBs.

You may also see a NEW feature recently released for Facebook Pages in some countries: Tag Unpaid Promotion. This is also to show support for a small business you love. (One tag per post). Similar to the #SupportSmallBusiness tags for stories on Instagram.

This new "Unpaid" tag is only available on Facebook Pages, not personal profiles. Facebook points out that if you get paid, or get any donated goods or services in exchange for making a post, then this new Unpaid tag is not to be used. You would use the branded content ''Tag Sponsor'' handshake label instead.

And, there is a new label for your Facebook Page Posts, Mark as COVID-19 Update. You can add at the time of posting, or retroactively add on any past posts. Facebook states this type of post can help you reach more people by appearing more visibly in different places on Facebook. Some extra organic reach is always welcome!

Btw, update on the $100M grants and ad credits from Facebook -- so far, it seems only rolled out in the United States and the two week window to apply has closed. There is a list of additional countries (Facebook did state the grant was coming to 30 countries where the company operates), but no other country seems to be available yet.

It certainly seems as though this challenging time is creating a bit more positive sentiment towards Facebook. With so much bad press and challenges over the past couple years, I''m sure the company is feeling more stable. Hm. (Now, if only Facebook would drastically improve its customer service, especially for ad/ad account issues, right?!)

Last week, I mentioned Messenger Rooms - the new 50-person videoconferencing feature, coming soon to all users on Facebook and soon to both Instagram and WhatsApp as well. This will provide a nice alternative to Zoom - mostly for social/personal use. I''m not yet convinced there will be much of a business/enterprise use case for rooms... yet.

You can start a video chat room on Facebook, in FB Groups (which can have multiple rooms), or in Messenger, and you''ll get a unique URL to share with invitees. Anyone can join your room, whether they have a Facebook account or not, which is cool. Plus, the rooms have no time limit. You can share your desktop. The camera on Messenger mobile app allows for fun filters, masks and VR features. It''s not clear yet whether we have the ability to record/save/share video chats. I''ll keep you posted.

One more fun update -- this Friday, May 15, Facebook and Instagram will celebrate the Class of 2020 with a graduation livestream featuring Oprah Winfrey as commencement speaker, plus Miley Cyrus, Awkwafina, and more. Facebook states, "Don't miss the once-in-a-lifetime #Graduation2020 event, as we come together to honor the high school and college students, teachers, and parents who have made this incredible achievement possible. #MoreTogether"

As you may have heard, Mark Zuckerberg streamed a number of updates on Friday - this would''ve been the time for Facebook''s annual F8 Developer conference where Zuck and team unveil numerous product updates.

The biggest reveal was Messenger Rooms, Facebook''s new ''Zoom competitor!'' However, to be clear, this is predominantly for social/personal use. Facebook states, "Messenger Rooms make it easy to spend quality time with friends, loved ones and people who share your interests. Host celebrations, gather a book club, or just hang out on the couch with friends."

Here''s a quick short list of the updates:

Messenger Rooms

• New video chatrooms
• Up to 50 people
• No time limit!
• Create a unique link, invite people to join (even if they''re not on Facebook)
  
• Start from Messenger, or start and share on Facebook through News Feed, Groups and Events
• Groups can have multiple rooms, ideal for sub-interests
• Rooms can be locked
• A room creator can remove unwanted participants
• Ads will not be shown in rooms
• Facebook states it doesn''t watch or listen to your audio or video calls
• The product launches in some countries this week and the rest of the world in the coming weeks

• Facebook ''Live With'' is back (the ability to bring a guest on via mobile); this feature was there in the past and for some odd reason Facebook quietly removed it)

• Audio only option for your audience on some FB Pages (shows a toll free #; I''m seeing this option in Facebook Live Producer); ideal for low bandwidth areas

How To Use Facebook Live Producer -- a step by step guide for broadcasting live natively on your public Page, personal profile, or any Group.

Facebook Live Producer is ideal if you''re brand new to broadcasting from your desktop. Key points to note:

• You cannot share both desktop and camera on the same broadcast.
• You have to choose ahead of time whether to stream using your camera OR share your desktop.
• You could broadcast narrating anything on your desktop (slides, visuals, browser) without being on camera.
• You cannot bring on guests to do an interview style of broadcast.
• You can see live comments inside Live Producer and you can post comments as well.
• You cannot display viewer comments on screen.
• You cannot add lower thirds/visuals/overlays.

For all the above features and more, I definitely recommend using a third party app such as Ecamm Live for Macs (my fave), Be.Live, Streamyard, Switcher Studio, Zoom, BlueJeans, OBS, Wirecast, or vMix!

Triple check all your security and privacy settings across all critical accounts such as social media, email, online banking and more. If you can remember your password, it''s not cryptic enough. Use a password manager. And, absolutely set up 2FA (two-factor authentication) on all your critical accounts. I recently experienced a major fraud myself -- fortunately I did not lose any money but it''s a big nuisance to have to change bank accounts!

Today, we are launching Facebook Campus, a college-only space designed to help students connect with fellow classmates over shared interests.

Facebook Campus is a dedicated section of the Facebook app designed for students, with a Campus profile that's different from their main Facebook profile. To create a Campus profile, all students need is their college email and graduation year.

Very interesting, yes? Zuck has been determined for the longest time to woo the younger audiences. Maybe the new Campus will help.

Hi Abigail,

The most common social fear is the fear of public speaking.

Is it any wonder you might be struggling to embrace streaming live on Facebook when you have one or more of these fears stopping you? The four big ones I've identified are:

By the way, in terms of sharing YouTube video links on Facebook, I would not normally recommend doing this because you''ll just get much less reach than if you upload your video natively to Facebook. Facebook really wants to keep growing video massively and YouTube is the company''s #1 competitor in this regard.

But, there are anomalies for sharing YouTube links on Facebook. For example, one member of my community has seen reach as high as 500k+ with YouTube videos on his Facebook page with 70k likes!) Come chat about this in my Social Scoop group.

Facebook Adds Option to Send Marketing Emails

Facebook is testing a new native email marketing and CRM (customer relationship management) feature on some Pages.

Hm, honestly, I can see some super small businesses taking advantage of this feature to reach more customers in addition to automated messages (using Facebook''s native chat). But, no way can I see Facebook''s new CRM system actually replacing real, third-party CRM or email management/marketing automation platforms. We need to be cautious of putting all our eggs into the Facebook basket, right?! Remember, it''s rented land! Your thoughts?

Well, one small sentence for Facebook... but potentially one giant impact for some users.

You may have seen a notification on Facebook recently stating that, effective October 1, 2020, Facebook is updating its Terms of Service to add in this clause:

"We also can remove or restrict access to your content, services or information if we determine that doing so is reasonably necessary to avoid or mitigate adverse legal or regulatory impacts to Facebook."

This new addition appears at the end of clause 3.2 which is about, What you can share and do on Facebook. All wording of that entire clause remains the same. It''s only the one sentence above that has been added.

Basically, it appears to be a "CYA" clause that seems to indicate Facebook could take down any content on its site that may land it in legal trouble. Hm.

According to Digital Trends, Facebook pushed out the notification after the company announced it may have to block users and publishers in Australia from sharing news on the platform due to landmark, new proposed legislation. The new Australian rules would force Facebook (among other tech giants) to compensate news publishers for their content. Facebook has responded by threatening to cut off access to all news content in Australia. Sigh. What a mess, eh. Find out more and come join the discussion here. • The Facebook App now has a new place to discover businesses and shop for products in the app. Facebook just started testing this in the US.

• Do you have Facebook Paid Online Events (POE) yet? Now, you can stream via Facebook Live into a gated Facebook Event where only paid ticket holders get access! All you do is start by creating a Facebook Event on your business page and if you have the new POE you''ll see where to add a price.
• Create Facebook business page stories on desktop Creator Studio. Have you checked your Creator Studio on desktop lately? Facebook is rolling out the ability to create (very basic!) STORIES for business pages. If you choose the photo/image format, you can add in a call-to-action button. Love that! And, check your Facebook page story on mobile, you just might see the BOOST button is now available. I have it on mine and it works like a charm. Of course, you might want to create more sophisticated Stories using creative apps like Canva and the myriad fun mobile apps ... and then use Ads Manager for Stories Ads. But, heck, it''s a great start to have Stories now available in Creator Studio. I''ll be going live on my Facebook Page to demo this soon. (Btw, I have it on good authority that the ability to SCHEDULE stories is coming to Creator Studio. Oh yeah, love that even more.)

Starting in September, the new Facebook design will be forced for all users with no ability to switch back to Classic. Ugh. I know, change is hard! Especially when it doesn''t seem warranted, right?

October 6th, 2020 marks the 10-year anniversary of Facebook groups! Amazing.

More than 1.8 billion people use Facebook groups every month, in tens of millions of active communities. And, there are more than 70 million group admins and moderators running active Facebook groups.

Facebook just held its Communities Summit (online) with a short keynote from CEO, Mark Zuckerberg followed by a keynote and interviews by Fidji Simo, Head of Product at Facebook.

Btw, Zuckerberg took great pride in reminding us that it was at Facebook''s first Communities Summit in Chicago, IL in 2017 where he first announced that the company would be changing its mission to, "Give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together." (The previous mission statement was, "Making the world more open and connected.")

Groups have been a MAJOR focus of Facebook''s since 2017 and they are really ramping up that focus with the new FB5 design, making groups front and center.

NEW Tools for Group admins include:

• Chats (they''re back!): Create and join real-time conversations within a group. (To be clear, these work like Messenger chat groups, ad different from video meetings via Rooms! I know, so many FB features!)
• Prompts: Start conversations with a new type of collaborative post where you can share photos about a specific topic and swipe through everyone's responses. (Sounds intriguing!)
• Q&A: Admins can host text-based question-and-answer sessions that are easy for the community to participate in. (Very nice!)

PLUS: if you run a *public* group, Facebook will start showing posts from your group both on Facebook and outside the Facebook apps, e.g. searchable on the web. People outside the group will be able to join the conversation. There is a trial period for these New Public Groups and good news is that Admin settings will prevail, so you''ll be able to enable post approval, for example.

If you have a WordPress website/blog and have ever embedded Facebook or Instagram posts on your site, your embeds will break starting October 24th due to a Facebook API change. :( Hmph!!

So, you''ll need to make an update to your WordPress plugins before October 24th.

For some reason (insert eye roll emoji!), Facebook is revoking ''unauthenticated support'' for oEmbed (''open embed'') content on WordPress sites. There are hoops to jump through to comply with Facebook''s ways. OR, a much simpler solution is to press a few buttons and add a couple of WordPress Plugins by Smash Balloon. Hurrah! (Btw, many folks have asked me and, to clarify, this API change does not impact any of Facebook''s Social Plugins, e.g. Comments, Page, Save etc.)

Facebook is rolling out ''post testing'' for organic video content. What this means is you can test 2-4 versions of a video on your Facebook business page, then publish the one that performs best on views (or whichever metric you prefer). Results show in as little as ten minutes.

First announced in early September, Facebook is releasing this feature to more users. Go to your Creator Studio tool on desktop to see if you have it! See the screenshot below and read more on video Post Testing here.

• After six weeks, Instagram finally brought back the Recent tab for hashtag pages in US. (Instagram removed the Recent tab on October 29th in order to "reduce the real-time spread of potentially harmful content that could pop up around the election." As of December 9th, the tab is baaack - hurrah!)
• Instagram is testing restricting sharing of feed posts to stories. Apparently, users have spoken up stating they want to see less feed posts re-shared in stories. (Or, could it be that IG/FB want users to create even more original content?! Hm!).
• Instagram launches shopping in Reels (IG''s TikTok rival). I know, it''s hard to keep up, right? But Reels is fairly easy to use and seems to be getting a ton more reach/views than other formats, including IGTV. For now, anyway.
• Instagram is testing recommending Reels on Facebook. (Hm, will Reels be coming to Facebook as well?! I hope not, haha!).
• Facebook is testing an Instagram Content Calendar in Creator Studio. Several of my community members have this new feature. If you''re not already using Creator Studio for scheduling, it''s very easy and very free! ;) Adding a calendar just makes sense. Next up, let''s see Story scheduling, too! (Which has been seen in out in the wilds for Facebook Stories, btw!)
