The international marina industry has been very saddened to hear of the passing of Ian McAndrew on Sunday 28th June. Ian entered the industry in 1987 when he developed the then ground-breaking Anchorage Port Stephens Resort & Marina in NSW. He was a national leader in the Australian marine sector including 14 years as President of BIA NSW. He played a key role in the establishment of the Marina Association of Australia in 1998, the precursor to the MIA. Over the following 15 years Ian made a major contribution to building the MIA's international reputation as a leader in marina accreditation and research and for a period he was the Vice-Chairman of the ICOMIA Marinas Group Committee. Our industries thoughts are with Ian's life partner Trish and their family.    

MIA Chairman and President Andrew Chapman commented: "Ian's energy and passion for the marina industry was well known by all who interacted with the MIA and those who attended our regular industry conferences. Ian was always involved in assisting with our conferences as session chair and participant in many panel sessions. Ian was our Association Treasurer for many years helping to build the solid base that the MIA enjoys today.

Ian was a very genuine man always enquiring about how things were not only with business but personally also. He will be deeply missed not only by family but by all in the industry.

MIA has commenced the drafting of a submission for an Australian industry wide exemption from the embedded electricity network obligation for marinas. After being informed through the relevant Ministers office that MIA should make a formal submission MIA has engaged a specialist in this area of regulation to assist with the drafting. MIA expects to submit its case by August with an outcome by November.

MIA will be resuming selected face to face courses in Australia. The Straddle Carrier course and the Advanced Marina Management (AMM) course will be held in these locations.

• Straddle Carrier Courses: 18-19 July, d'Albora Marinas Nelson Bay NSW; 25-26 July, Royal Perth Yacht Club WA
• AMM Course: 20-25 Sept Sydney, NSW.

The Marine Industry Foundation (MIF) recently provided a scholarship to assist with the participation of Elise Currey in the Intermediate Marina Management (IMM) course. Elise is the Marina Manager at Coffs Harbour Marina in NSW.  

MIF has also provided a grant to the Making Waves Foundation specifically for its forthcoming 'Wright of Passage' workplace-learning program. The program is designed to support young people (16-25 years of age) to help their entry into paid work or further education in the marine sector.

Congratulations to Dubai Marina Yacht Club, in the heart of Dubai for accrediting as a Fish Friendly marina this month.  They are the only marina in the Middle East with this accreditation.

Dubai Marina Yacht Club have been a Clean Marina since 2016 and recently re-accredited under the program.  They have now completed the subsequent steps to become a Fish Friendly Marina.

The Fish Friendly Marinas Accreditation has been developed to inform marina managers on how to maximise the benefits for fish and recognise those operators actively working to improve fish habitats. The Program provides advice and supporting material to help marina operators incorporate beneficial outcomes for native fish into their existing operational plans, such as ensuring their marina is free from marine pests and providing habitat for marine life.

14 participants who have completed the Club Marine Emergency Preparedness Course responded positively to the online content and live session with industry veteran presenter Phil McGowen CMM. The next live online sessions will be on 8th July and 16th Sept. Once you register for the course you will be able to access part one of the course - self-paced learning immediately and will be booked in for part two - the live session. The much awaited 2019 Club Marine Health of the Australian Marina Industry Survey 127 page report is now available for purchase from the MIA website. This is the fourth such survey that provides the world's best marina business trend data for any nation. Dr Mahoney at Michigan State University is the producer of the survey and he commented:   

"The (Australian) marina industry has committed to a continuing effort to scientifically collect and report data concerning their performance unlike any world-wide. The analyses of this data shows Australian marinas are performing very well in terms of revenues and the occupancy of their storage spaces..."  

A copy of the survey was sent to all marinas who participated in the survey in 2019.  

Thank you to all the members who made me so welcome on my recent trip to Queensland and made time to meet with me.  I was away for three weeks, met with over 40 members and still have many more to catch up with.  I'll be back as soon as the border reopens.  In the meantime, please feel free to make contact with me if I can be of assistance.   

On 28 July 2020, the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman launched an inquiry to investigate the practices of the insurance industry that impact small businesses and consider whether small business insurance products are fit for purpose in response to the growing trend of insurance companies denying small businesses insurance or pricing insurance policies out of reach.   Many members completed the survey and the MIA has provided a submission to the inquiry on behalf of its members.    The inquiry is due to report on outcomes in December 2020.  In the meantime we realise that insurance is an ongoing issue for members and we continue to work on initiatives that may assist the insurance industry in better understanding the risk mitigation strategies of marinas so that they can make a more informed assessment.  We will keep you posted.

The recently announced cancellation of METS in November has directly impacted many MIA members and associated businesses. METS is not only the world's largest recreational marine trade event. Many associated meetings are also held around METS including the annual meeting of the Global Marina Institute (GMI) Advisory Board and a meeting of Certified Marina Managers and Professionals (CMM/CMP) from around the world. The GMI Advisory Board will now meet via zoom.

By May next year there is no doubt the industry will be ready to get together and reconnect face to face!  To help you do that we are continuing to plan a truly inspiring Marinas21.  There is a lot going on in our industry on the Gold Coast so it is the perfect destination to again host this event.  The Marriott is even undergoing a massive refurbishment in anticipation of our arrival!

The program is taking shape and the next edition of Waterline will outline some of the topics that are on the agenda.   We are delighted to announce that the Club Managers' Forum will be held immediately prior to Marinas21, commencing mid-morning Sunday before bumping in to the Welcome Reception that evening.

The Exhibitor Prospectus for Marinas21 is to be launched this week.  With nearly 25% of the exhibitor space already committed it is shaping up to be a great conference and exhibition.

MIA invites all Certified Members (CMM, CMO, CMP, CSM) to attend our Certified Members Meeting and a short marina tour on 12 Sept from 10 am to 6 pm at the Royal Motor Yacht Club, Broken Bay, NSW, Australia. The reality that COVID will be with us for some time will likely see a continued requirement to implement and sustain COVIDsafe practices well into the future.  Marinas need to remain vigilant and in the event of a positive COVID incident onsite, the need for marinas to identify and report on who has been onsite and to assist tracing efforts will be ever more important.

The BIA Access Management System (AMS) provides marinas, boatyards and similar facilities with a very effective and efficient system for managing visiting Marine Card Holders - a cohort that numbers in excess of 3,500 marine tradespersons.  It provides a gatekeeper system to control access to the site and a means to communicate with those onsite or after they have departed which are key requirements of any COVIDsafe plan.
