A message to our community

As a supporter of the MCA, I am writing to update you on our actions in response to COVID-19. The health and wellbeing of our staff and visitors is of paramount importance. We are closely following NSW Government guidelines including increased cleaning regimes, observing self-isolation recommendations and restricting events to a maximum of 500 people. We are in daily contact with the Government and will respond to any new directives as they occur.

The Museum remains open and our exhibitions including the 22^nd Biennale of Sydney: NIRIN and the Collection, as well as the MCA Store, MCA Cafe, Graze restaurant and Members Lounge are operating as normal. Ambassador, Young Ambassador, Member, Public and Access programs are continuing on a case-by-case basis, as we are following the Government's restricted attendance guidelines.

In this extraordinary situation, the MCA will continue to support our staff and visitors, and we would like to extend our thoughts to all those directly affected by the pandemic. Museums can and should be places of refuge in times of crisis, and we will do all we can to offer this possibility to those who can continue to visit.

We will keep you updated as the situation changes.

Biennale of Sydney opens this weekend

The countdown to the 22nd Biennale of Sydney NIRIN is on! We are marking the opening weekend with a haunting performance by Brian Fuata and talks from Nongirrna Marawili, Aziz Hazara and Joe?l Andrianomearisoa. The exhibition presents 19 contemporary artists that connect local communities and global networks. For the first time, artists from Nepal, Georgia, Afghanistan, Sudan and Ecuador will participate.

We are opening our doors!

The countdown is on until 16 June when the MCA reopens. Get ready to see the spectacular 22nd Biennale of Sydney: NIRIN in person. Enjoy a bite to eat at the MCA Cafe and support local designers with a purchase at the MCA Store. There will be enhanced health, hygiene, physical distancing and safety measures in place to make sure our community stays safe. Dear MCA Friend,

At the heart of the MCA is our community - and you are an important part of that. You have helped us create a welcoming and inclusive museum which connects people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds with the work of living artists.

It has been a challenging time for all of us over the past few months. Sadly, the Museum may be temporarily closed, but we have been working hard to maintain our connections during difficult times, finding new ways to bring artists and audiences together. If you haven't already, do check out mca.art.

Our exhibition and MCA Collection displays are a source of inspiration for us all, including our Artist Educators who develop creative learning programs that impact lives. As we emerge from this crisis, we need these social impact programs more than ever.

Almost 80% of our revenue is raised through community support and self-generated income. As a result of COVID-19, we have experienced a 40% reduction in revenue, primarily due to the loss of venue hire income.

We need your support to make sure we can continue to make contemporary art accessible to all.

Your tax-deductible donation at this time is crucial as it will enable us to continue to offer a range of activities including:

Exhibitions by living Australian and international artists
Collection resources, such as conservation, for contemporary Australian art
Social impact programs led by artist educators, including:
MCA Bella programs for people of all ages with access requirements
MCA Together School Access program for school students across Western Sydney
Artful: Art and Dementia a program for people living with dementia and their support networks

We're excited to welcome you back to the? MCA, from Tuesday 16 June. We've missed you! ??

We'll be reopening with the 22nd? Biennale of Sydney NIRIN. Nothing compares to seeing these incredible artworks up close, so we're delighted we've been able to extend this important exhibition. The MCA Store, MCA Cafe and Loti Smorgon Sculpture Terrace with Danie Mellor's work Matter Matters will also reopen on 16 June. Graze restaurant will return on 30 June.

Our revised opening hours will be Tuesdays to Sundays, 10am-5pm. Entry is free, drop in and un-ticketed.

The National Centre for Creative Learning and our Members Lounge will remain closed for the time being. For now, our access and public programs will continue online.

Health & Safety

Your safety is important to us. We will have enhanced health and hygiene measures in place, ?following ?strict? NSW ?Government guidelines ?and ?based on expert public health advice.?

These measures include:

Asking all visitors to enter via our George Street entrance and exit through Circular Quay to enforce capacity restrictions and manage traffic flow
Limiting visitor numbers ?to allow for 4 square metres per person
Enhanced daily cleaning regimes - including hourly cleaning of frequently-used spaces
Ensuring adequate handwashing facilities ?and ?sanitiser are available

Signage throughout the building ?to encourage physical distancing of 1.5 metres
No cash, card transactions only
Our cloakroom is closed so please don't bring large bags and there will be no lost property service.

We are doing all this, and more, to help keep you and our staff safe and minimise the spread of COVID-19. We also ask that you take care of each other while you are here. Please respect physical distancing recommendations and don't visit the Museum if you feel unwell.?

Annual Appeal

The past few months have been extremely difficult for the Museum and we will reopen with limited capacity. The impact of COVID-19 has resulted in a 40% reduction in our income, primarily due to a loss in revenue from venue hires which account for $4M of our annual turnover. As capacity restrictions will continue when we reopen, we have had to introduce measures to manage the ongoing loss in revenue. We have made the difficult decision not to open on Mondays, to cancel Wednesday late nights and for the time being the MCA Collection will remain closed.

The next few months will continue to be extremely difficult for the MCA financially. Please consider donating to our Annual Appeal. Your donation is tax-deductible and will be generously matched by the MCA Board, so your contribution will have double the impact.

Lindy Lee: Moon in a Dew Drop

Our main spring and summer show is locked in! Australian Chinese artist, Lindy Lee will be taking over our Level 3 gallery with a major survey exhibition from 2 October. Curated by MCA Director, Elizabeth Ann Macgregor OBE, this exhibition will introduce you to over 70 works from across the artist's extensive career.

Using a spectacular array of processes which include flinging molten bronze, burning paper and allowing the rain to transform surfaces, the artist draws on her Australian and Chinese heritage to develop works that engage with the history of art, cultural authenticity, personal identity and the cosmos.

We're incredibly grateful to those who have supported the MCA Annual Appeal already. As the end of the Appeal on 30 June nears, we still have a way to go.

The impact of COVID-19 has resulted in a 40% reduction in our income, primarily due to a loss in revenue from venue hires which account for $4M of our annual turnover. Consequently, MCA exhibitions, Collection resources, and social impact programs are at risk. We need your help now more than ever, and the 2020 Annual Appeal is an opportunity for you to make a real difference.

In recognition of our difficult financial position, the entire MCA Board have generously offered to match the total amount raised by the 2020 Annual Appeal as of 30 June, so your tax-deductible donation will have double the impact.
