An exhibition of pictures by one of the most distinguished observers of the British landscape, Norman Ackroyd, will be on show at Messums in London throughout January. Twenty-two aquatints and etchings of the Yorkshire countryside – from the snowy plains of the dales to the shadowy presence of Whitby Abbey – will reveal the majesty not only of the landscape of the North but of Ackroyd’s technical skill.

The lasting power of fired clay is unique: no other art has a lineage as ubiquitous or intense as this. Inevitably then, it leans on all contemporary artists who seriously engage with it. Contemporary ceramic has to deal with an ever-present memory, one that cannot easily be elided, and this is an inescapable factor in its aesthetic make-up...read more

Artist Max Wade is originally from Somerset but lives and works in London. Messums Wiltshire is delighted to present a body of his new paintings as part of Emerging Talents series this spring.
Each of Max’s paintings start from drawings and are rooted in the reality of forms, motifs and compositions that are influenced by sketches of his travels and day-to-day life.

The current Duke and Duchess of Devonshire are passionate collectors and commissioners of contemporary ceramics, which they display in both the public and private rooms of their home in Derbyshire. Director of Collections & Exhibition at Chatsworth Kate Brindley will join us at Messums Wiltshire to introduce us to the collection that is displayed in the unique setting of Chatsworth House and the Devonshire Collections, amassed by the family over 500 years..

Introducing Hannah Mooney, this years emerging talent. Mooney began painting en plein air in her third year at the Glasgow School of Art. When she began this new technique, she says 'I found a subject matter I identified with and a release like no other. It was as though I discovered an appetite, I never knew I had.'

Francesco's diaphanous and dream-like watercolours of Italy are like memories; both contemporary and rooted in history. Working during the spring and summer 2020 in the Italian countryside Francesco's en plein air paintings are spontaneous notes on the landscape that speak to things of the past as well as something of our contemporary concerns.

Join us online for a conversation with activist, environmentalist and conservationist Ben Goldsmith discussing re-wilding and the environment. Working with a wildlife ecologist, Ben has encouraged wetlands along the River Frome, wild flowers and native species including water voles, beavers and glow-worms - which used to be a feature of long summer evenings.
