For this exhibition – the second of a two-part show that began at Messums London in December 2019 – Jackson traces the origins of his second river and the northern parts of the Cranborne Chase ecosystem where the River Nadder springs and begins its descent into Salisbury. Following the course of the Fonthill Brook, a mere one-hundred yards from Messums Wiltshire where these paintings will be shown, Jackson has produced a body of work that highlights a place of coincidence, crossed paths, rediscovery and return, and reveal ‘a glorious nature-filled watercourse, [and] a fragile precious habitat that deserves our continuing respect.’...read more

EXHIBITION: Laurence Edwards 'Doncaster Miners: Portraits of a Mining Community'

15 January – 15 February 2020
PREVIEW: Tuesday 14 January

Pre-order exhibition catalogue

In 2018 Laurence Edwards was awarded a commission by the City of Doncaster for a sculptural installation celebrating and remembering the lives of those who had lived and worked in the pits around Doncaster. Edwards decided to sculpt 40 portraits of former miners to be installed in the city centre. Sculpted from life in two-hour sittings, the portraits are beautifully modelled; affectionate yet sincere and as much a product of the conversations and relationship between Laurence and his sitters as pure observation...read more

EXHIBITION: Norman Ackroyd 'Images of the North'

15 January – 15 February 2020
PREVIEW: Wednesday 15 January, 2-3pm

An exhibition of pictures by one of the most distinguished observers of the British landscape, Norman Ackroyd, will be on show at Messums in London throughout January. Twenty-two aquatints and etchings of the Yorkshire countryside – from the snowy plains of the dales to the shadowy presence of Whitby Abbey – will reveal the majesty not only of the landscape of the North but of Ackroyd’s technical skill.
After leaving the family home in Hunslet, Leeds, to take up a place at the Royal College of Art in 1961, Ackroyd has built a reputation as one of Britain’s most highly regarded printmakers...

EXHIBITION: Gommie

8 - 15 February
PREVIEW: 8 February
RSVP

Gommie started to make these pictures during one of the lowest ebbs of his life a couple of years ago when, with no permanent address, no studio and only a tent to sleep in, he felt compelled to start walking. Hitching a lift from a friend to Dover he set off for the north of England but as he walked he started jotting down notes about his encounters with the people he met and noted their comments on the Ordnance Survey maps he was using to navigate his way.
Last October Gommie won the Saatchi Art Prize for best newcomer and his work is now within the Soho House Collection...

PREVIEW: Tuesday 18 February, 6pm  RSVP

"Perhaps time is the single most important determinant in how we understand ceramic. It isn’t just that the discipline has a dauntingly deep and pervasive history - we are aware of fired clay objects from as early as 29,000 BCE." Paul Greenhalgh, director, Sainsbury Centre.
Leading ceramics expert Paul Greenhalgh takes us back to where it all began, introducing two of the biggest names in Korean ceramics working today for their debut in London, as part of our focus on Ceramic across both London and Wiltshire venues...

EXHIBITION: Michael Flynn Ceramics

22 February - 15 March
PREVIEW: 21 February
RSVP

Michael Flynn is one of Britain’s most remarkable sculptors working in clay today and godfather of a new movement of figurative, ceramic narrative art sweeping Europe that Messums Wiltshire has been proud to celebrate. His works are modelled on the kind of courtly figurines made in the 18th century by Wedgwood and Meissen but subverted, presenting them wrestling, jumping, hanging upside down and in displays of orgiastic candour. His work is in 40 major collections worldwide including the Museum of Art and Design in New York and The Victoria and Albert Museum...read more

The prints in this show feature man at a crossroads as well as boats and other visual metaphors for life’s endings and beginnings. These are poetry in physical form, fragments from a mind less ordinary...
