ARCHIVE #04 - SLEEP
Every so often participants in No Olho da Rua have photographed their companions asleep. Some of these images are haunting and at times a sense of oblivion prevails, but there is also peace and serenity, even amongst the mess. Also, there is space for the imagination, an awareness that when any of us are sleeping we can be somewhere (or even someone) else.

What began as an initial desire to photograph the insides of church basements quickly expanded into a much broader series examining the fundamental search for community in America. The activities depicted range from Boy Scout meetings to New Age spiritual practices to corporate team building exercises and were all made in multipurpose community spaces that are ubiquitous throughout the United States. I became intrigued by the way one activity bleeds into another, creating a symbolic space of communal introspection. Put simply, these photographs are about the search for purpose and meaning in a world that both demands and resists interpretation.

Archive 3: Dogs and Other Animals
In 1995,? artists Julian Germain (UK), Patricia Azevedo and Murilo Godoy (BR) began working on No Olho da Rua (In the Eye of the Street) in the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte, putting cameras into the hands of street children, young people living chaotic lives on the margins of society who had rarely, if ever, been photographed or made pictures themselves. The idea was not to offer them 'supervised' access to photography, but to give them freedom to independently make their own pictures, of anything they wanted, where and when they chose. Fifty young people were given the most basic plastic point and shoot cameras and shown how to use them. From the outset they not only got enormous pleasure from photography, they also produced astonishing images, and as a result, the project has continued ever since, albeit on a? sporadic and occasional basis as and when resources have allowed.?

Virginia Woolf 2 short stories cover art work by? Bella Newman
?
?
?
We''re delighted to announce our second collaboration with Sendb00ks with the publication of two short stories by Virginia Woolf.
Kew Gardens was the first publication to propel The Hogarth Press from a dining room hobby into a publishing enterprise. Virginia and Leonard Woolf hand stitched all one hundred and fifty copies of the first edition from their house in 1919 while Virginia’s sister, Vanessa Bell, designed the original cover. Woolf was no stranger to spending long periods of time alone at home overlooking Kew Gardens, reflecting on her immediate surroundings and the natural world beyond it.
Our cover artist Bella Newman, who is currently isolating at her family home in the countryside of Pennsylvania, shares both Woolf’s affinity with nature and her keen focus on women in her work. This small book remains an inspiring example of how loneliness and isolation can be transmuted into a deep connection with the universal human experience that makes writing and sharing it so timeless and powerful. The stories give a sense of interconnectedness between humans and the natural world that offers relief, solace and hope at a time when this relationship feels more fractured than ever.
