Banff Mountain Film Festival

Join us this November and December for the world-renowned Banff Centre's Banff Mountain Film Festival! For over 40 years, this festival has brought the best action, environment, and adventure films to audiences around the world. Tickets go fast, so be sure to grab yours! Screenings will be held at our Olympia, Tacoma, and Seattle branches.

January Break Camp

We’re excited to announce the return of Winter Break Camp at Meany Lodge! Last year campers had so much fun snowshoeing, sledding, making snow forts, and drinking plenty of hot chocolate. Send your kiddos age 7-12 on a snowy adventure with us! Break camp will take place Jan 2-4, 2020.

As the Arctic’s thawing permafrost threatens to release its massive stores of carbon, brave scientists are racing against the clock to unlock its secrets. Join Dr. Robert Max Holmes of Woods Hole Research Center and photographer Chris Linder, contributors to The Big Thaw: Ancient Carbon, Modern Science and A Race to Save the World, a new book from Braided River, for a multimedia presentation going behind-the-scenes to show climate science at work in Siberia and Alaska, followed by a panel discussion featuring regional climate leaders.

The Mountaineers Blood Drive | Dec 5

Did you know that Bloodworks is an independent, community-based nonprofit that is the sole provider to more than 90 Northwest hospitals? It’s true! And they need you to donate blood to continue this work. The Bloodmobile will be visiting The Mountaineers Seattle Program Center and all are welcome.

Refugee Kit Creation Night with Cotopaxi | Dec 6
One great way to volunteer your time this holiday season is by joining Cotopaxi at our Seattle Program Center to help assemble kits for refugees at the Arizona/Mexico border using upcycled backpacks. The evening will be a fun opportunity to socialize, do good, and participate in giveaways!

Want to improve your wildlife photography? Join us for a workshop that includes a lecture and a field trip to the Skagit Valley to practice what you learned.

Explore the hidden world of pollination for highly-specialized plants that depend on animals for survival. John Fleckenstein, formerly with the Washington Natural Heritage Program, offers a look at unusual plant-animal affiliations and pollination mechanisms.

Tacoma: Trail Emergency Preparedness Seminar | Nov 21
Learn first aid and emergency procedures to promote safety while on the trail. This is designed to give some tips to staying medically safe in our PNW woods, and fulfills one requirement to becoming a volunteer hike or backpack leader.

Wilderness Skills provides skills and practice for hiking and the groundwork for backpacking in the Northwest. It includes a mix of presentations, discussions, and hands-on learning to help you get started on your adventures.

This course consists of a field trip and four lectures on backcountry travel, avalanche awareness and safety, route selection, cold weather ailments, clothing and equipment. Can be taken separately or in conjunction with Olympia’s Basic Snowshoeing.

Foothills: Multiweek Telemark & Randonee Ski Lessons | Jan 8-Feb 12
This class is taught by The Summit at Snoqualmie SnowSports School, with instructors from The Summit at Snoqualmie SnowSports School. Special group pricing is available for Mountaineers members. All levels between “never skied” and “advanced” are available for both Alpine Touring and Telemark.

Seattle: Greenland Paddle Carving Class | Jan 11
Interested in making a Greenland paddle by yourself? It’s possible during a one-day Greenland paddle carving workshop with Don Beale. The Greenland paddles cause less strain on your body, are less tiring, and catch less wind because of the narrow blade and the difference in paddling technique. Whether you’re a new backpacker or returning to backpacking, this course is for you! It’s a great opportunity to meet new people and learn to safely and confidently enjoy overnight trips.

Foothills: Backcountry Touring | Jan 28-Mar 8
This course teaches the skills and knowledge necessary to become a competent participant on day tours in the backcountry. This course welcomes both skiers and splitboarders who can ski or ride downhill at an advanced intermediate level or better at a lift-served resort.

Beginner Snowshoe: Reflection Lakes | Nov 18
Join us for an easy 6-mile lake snowshoe near Mt. Rainier to enjoy fresh snowfall and greet the coming winter season.

Frontcountry Trail Run: Cougar Mountain Loop | Nov 19
Join the Foothills Trail Running Committee for a 7.5 mile run along Cougar Mountain Loop at an easy 4-5mph pace.

Day Hike: Mailbox Peak | Nov 21
Get the best of both worlds on this Mailbox Peak hike. We will be going up the old trail and coming back down the new trail.

Stewardship: Randall Preserve | Nov 22
Mid-November is the perfect time to visit Randall Preserve and a stewardship party is the perfect reason to visit! Help us maintain plantings, work on trails, and remove invasive species while looking for salmon, eagles, and other migratory birds on Randall Preserve.

Urban Adventure: Smith Tower | Nov 23
Have you ever wanted to go to the top of the Smith Tower? Now’s your chance on this casual photography activity where you will see antiques from the past and panoramic views of Seattle and Puget Sound.

Scramble: Mt. Dickerman | Nov 30
Basic Climbing and Scrambling students are invited to come on this moderate scramble up Mt. Dickerman, offering 4,000ft of elevation and a great workout.

Day Hike: Clark Lake Park | Dec 17
From Wilson Playfields we will walk around a beautiful rural park on Kent East Hill, offering interesting trails, a pretty lake, and views.

Snowshoe: Bagley & Chain Lakes | Dec 17
Hope for snow for this Cascade snowshoe! If weather permits, we will be enjoying beautiful peaks and a trip to two scenic lakes.

Stewardship: Cheasty Greenspace | Dec 21
Come participate in the community stewardship effort to restore and maintain a safe and welcoming urban forest! This activity is run by Friends of Cheasty Greenspace Mt. View as part of The Mountaineers Stewardship Partner Program.

Winter Break Camp | Jan 2-4
Calling all snow bunnies ages 7-12: registration is now open for Winter Break Camp! Hosted at the Mountaineers Meany Lodge, this overnight camp features lots of snowplay, sledding, snowshoeing, and camp fun. Transportation, gear, room and board, and outdoor instruction from our camp staff is included.

Mini Mountaineers | Registration Open
Bring your little one to check out our year-round club for the youngest Mountaineers! Upcoming events include a nature walk through Carkeek Park, a turkey trot at the Seattle Program Center, and a botany walk through the Washington Park Arboretum.

School Break Camps | Registration Open
When school is out, come adventure with The Mountaineers! These week-long day camps in February and April for kids ages 7-12 run from 9am-4pm and feature lots of games, climbing, outdoor skills, and a field trip.
