The best way to protect your business from data breaches is to ensure that everyone in your company is using strong and unique passwords on all of their enterprise and personal accounts.

But as we all know, people tend to make mistakes, so accounts are inevitably bound to get compromised. Using strong and unique passwords limits your exposure when a data breach occurs.

Following the same rationale, Service Providers are also bound to get compromised. When that happens, Personal Identifiable Information (PII) and passwords get leaked, either in clear text form or in a hashed form.

These breaches can have catastrophic consequences for users who use weak passwords (which can be decoded, even when hashed) and users who reuse passwords, which allows hackers to use these passwords to access other services they use that password for.

These breaches also put your identity at risk, given that with enough identity attributes, scammers can convincingly impersonate you and go after your private data, and even your money.

The only thing companies can do in the case of a service provider data breach is to change all the passwords they use for that breached service.

But this also requires keeping an eye out for any news on that data beach, to make sure that you catch all the latest updates on it, and that every password within your company that was part of this data breach has been changed.

It goes without saying: this task can be quite strenuous and is difficult to enforce when you have no visibility over the exact scope of the compromise.

To help you protect yourself and your customers from the effects of data breaches, we have launched a new Data Breach Monitoring track with a product that we're calling Breach Monitor.

Over the past couple of years, we have been building a database of data breaches, containing credentials and passwords that have been leaked in data breaches over the course of the last 10 years.

Using that database of over 16 Billion records, we've created an API that we're leveraging in our Enterprise and MSP Portal to identify accounts that have been compromised in data breaches.

To access your data breach report, just navigate to the Breach Monitor section in the Portal. All accounts that have been compromised will appear in this list, and any changes that you make to these accounts will automatically update the report.

This marks the beginning of the road for our Monitoring track. We plan on tying the Monitoring track to our core Manage track to continue growing our Identity Platform and enable advanced features such as Identity Workflows (ex: the ability to trigger a password rotation when a specific service gets compromised).

About a month ago, Myki took part in ConnectWise’s annual IT Nation Connect conference, held in Orlando, Florida between October 30 and November 1.

As one of the event’s Silver Exhibitors, we got a chance to try out an unconventional marketing idea we’ve had in mind for a while.

Myki is all about security and privacy, because unlike other password managers, Myki does not store any of your data in the cloud, instead keeping it all offline, on your own devices.

So what better way to drive home our point about the importance of privacy than to remind people about it in the place where privacy matters most to everyone: the restroom.

We care about your privacy, and so should you. If you value your privacy, make sure you’re storing your passwords with Myki.

Myki supports biometric authentication on both iOS and Android, but up until today, our users have had to use a PIN code to unlock their Windows and Mac apps.

Today, we're announcing support for Windows Hello and Touch ID, which means that starting today, our Enterprise, MSP, and Consumer users will be able to unlock their Myki Vault in a completely passwordless way.

On Windows, you'll now be able to use your face, fingerprint, palm, or any other Windows Hello supported authentication method to unlock your Myki vault.

On Mac, the built-in fingerprint scanner can now be used to unlock your Myki Vault with Touch ID.

These two additions mark the latest steps toward the passwordless path we're heading towards, with the next being the addition of WebAuthN support in the coming months.

From a user experience perspective, the ability to unlock your Myki Vault with biometrics further reduces the risk of users forgetting the PIN codes they use to access their vaults, which should remove the last layer of friction for end users.

Myki doesn't require a master password to authenticate, and starting today, it doesn't require a PIN code either. Enterprises will now be able to benefit from passwordless authentication across the board with locally stored vaults. This combination of features removes all friction for end users when accessing the Myki Vault.

We're beginning to roll out our Windows Hello and Touch ID updates starting today, and they should reach all our users in the next 5-7 days.

One of the features that has been the most requested in the past year is a billing integration with PSA products to simplify the process of reselling Myki to clients.

Today, we're announcing our first integration of this kind with the release of our Connectwise Manage billing integration.

Starting this week, MSPs will be able to dynamically add and update Myki licensing information in their clients' Manage contracts.

This enables our partners to make changes to the user count of managed companies in Myki without having to worry about updating the invoices of their customers.

The integration will gradually be rolled out within the next 7 days. In order to set it up, visit the "Integrations" section in the Myki MSP Portal and select "ConnectWise Manage" from the list of integrations.

There, you can integrate with Manage by entering your API credentials if you haven't already (you can find a detailed guide here). You can also create or match Myki with a ConnectWise Manage product and modify the base price you are reselling Myki for.

In order to enable billing for a specific company that you are reselling to, scroll down to that company's entry in the matching list and click the "Enable Billing" button. All you have to do after that is select the contract you want to apply it to, make any changes to the pricing that you might want to make, and hit the "Save" button.

A Myki entry will be added to the agreement of that company with the exact number of users currently assigned, as well as the selected price per license.

A new survey has revealed some very interesting statistics about businesses and their relationship with cybersecurity.

According to the Small Business Cybercriminal Target Survey, which was commissioned by the National Cyber Security Alliance and conducted by Zogby Analytics, 88% of small business decision makers believe that they are at least a somewhat likely target for cybercriminals, including 46% who believe they are a very likely target.

62% of surveyed businesses report that cybersecurity is a high priority, and when it comes to business size, larger companies appear to be more concerned. 72% of businesses with 251-500 employees regard cybersecurity as a high priority, while for businesses with 1-10 employees, only 39%.

33% of surveyed businesses have an in-house IT department staffed with 10 or more individuals and 30% have an in-house department with fewer than 10 individuals.

45% of surveyed businesses require employees to use lengthy unique passwords for each account, which is one of the 4 most common cybersecurity best practices employed by the surveyed businesses.

The other 3 best practices: reporting suspicious emails (54%), running current anti-virus software on all devices (54%), and updating systems and software when prompted by the software (47%).

28% of surveyed businesses have experienced an official data breach within the past 12 months, and as a result, 69% have been offline for a limited time, 37% have experienced a financial loss, and 10% have gone out of business.

The beginning of a new year is a good time to reflect on past mistakes and resolve to do better in the future.

As is the case every year, 2019 saw its fair share of major data breaches, including the massive Collection 1 leak, which included 2.2. billion unique usernames and passwords.

But we can only hope that all the companies that got hit last year have made tightening up cybersecurity one of their new year’s resolutions and top priorities.

Here are just 8 of those data breaches that we think you should know about: what companies were affected, how they got hacked, and what data was compromised.

DoorDash

Back in September, food delivery service Doordash reported that the private data of 4.9 million customers, delivery workers, and merchants were stolen, including names, emails, addresses, passwords, and more. According to the company, the breach happened in May and was blamed on an unnamed third-party service provider.

Adobe

In October, it was found that creative software developer Adobe was hosting nearly 7.5 million user records on an unprotected database that could be accessed without a password or any other form of authentication. This exposed information included emails, subscription statuses, and more details which could be used in targeted phishing campaigns. When notified about this by a security researcher, Adobe secured the database that same day.

American Medical Collection Agency

A total of 21 companies and 24.4 million patients were affected by this data breach. In June, medical bill and debt collector AMCA informed one of its clients, Quest Diagnostics, that an "unauthorized user" had access to their system and might have accessed data on 11.9 million Quest patients, including credit card numbers, bank account information, medical information, and Social Security Numbers. More of AMCA’s clients would soon disclose that they had been affected by the breach, bringing the total up to 21.

Capital One

Capital One bank announced in July that data belonging to 100 million US citizens and 6 million Canadian residents had been stolen by a hacker. This data included 140,000 US Social Security numbers, 80,000 bank account numbers, and 1 million Canadian social insurance numbers, in addition to names, addresses, ZIP codes, phone numbers, emails and birth dates. The hacker behind the data breach allegedly stole the information by finding a misconfigured firewall on Capital One's Amazon Web Services cloud server, and was quickly apprehended by the FBI.

Canva

This past May, online graphic design tool Canva was hit with a data breach that exposed the private data of roughly 139 million users. The data, which included names, usernames, email addresses, and city and country information, was obtained by the same hacker responsible for the Collection 1 leak, Gnosticplayers. Email passwords were also accessed, however they were salted and hashed using the Bcrypt algorithm.

Zynga

In September, Words With Friends developers Zynga announced that "certain player account information may have been illegally accessed by outside hackers”. The hacker Gnosticplayers once again claimed responsibility for this data breach, revealing that they had accessed the data of 218 million Words With Friends users. Compromised information included players’ names, emails, login IDs, hashed passwords, password reset tokens (if requested), phone numbers (if provided), Facebook IDs (if connected via the social network) and Zynga account IDs.

Facebook

Also in September, the phone numbers of more than 419 million Facebook users were exposed. The breach was the result of exposed servers, not protected by any password, one holding 133 million records on U.S.-based Facebook users, 18 million records of users in the U.K., and another with more than 50 million records on users in Vietnam. Each record contained a user’s unique Facebook ID and the phone number listed on the account, exposing these users to SIM Swapping attacks or worse.

First American

Back in May, it was found that financial services company First American had 885 million sensitive customer financial records openly exposed on its website. This exposed data included included Social Security numbers, driver's license images, bank account numbers and statements, mortgage and tax documents, and wire transaction receipts. The discovery was made by independent security journalist Brian Krebs, and when informed, First American took immediate action and shut down external access to the application.

Learning from mistakes in 2020

Search for the item that you need then hit ENTER or RETURN to autofill the username and the password field. To only autofill a specific field, navigate to the item fields by using the arrows on the keyboard and hit ENTER or RETURN on a specific field to autofill it.

We are in the process of building an Identity Management ecosystem that you can leverage to secure and simplify your daily workflow, as well as your customers' workflow.

Search for the item that you need then hit ENTER or RETURN to autofill the username and the password field. To only autofill a specific field, navigate to the item fields by using the arrows on the keyboard and hit ENTER or RETURN on a specific field to autofill it.

How many employees within your MSP require full unrestricted access to the entire business network to perform their daily duties?

The answer to that question is most probably very few or none, and yet many businesses still hand over the keys to the kingdom to new employees as part of the onboarding process.

Granting network access this indiscriminately is pretty reckless and only makes your organization more vulnerable to cyberattacks and internal data breaches.

The solution? Implement the Principle of Least Privilege.

What is the Principle of Least Privilege?

The Principle of Least Privilege, or POLP, is the practice of limiting access rights for users to the bare minimum permissions they need to perform their work. In other words: if you don't need it, you don't need access to it.

To implement POLP policies, you'll need to make zero access the default for all employees and then begin granting it as necessary.

Eventually, every employee within your organization should have access to only the accounts and services they truly need to do their jobs, and these privileges can later be updated as they move to new positions or exit the company.

The risks of unrestricted privilege

Suppose one of your employees has access to the entire network, and that employee falls for a phishing attack, unknowingly revealing their credentials to a hacker. Instead of gaining access to just the handful of corporate accounts that employee uses day-to-day, they'd instead have access to the whole network, and be in a position to compromise everything.

Another example: suppose one of your employees decides to go rogue and leak some confidential information. If all they have access to are a handful of accounts they need to do their job, they may not even have access to that type of information to begin with. But if they''ve been given access to the entire network, there's no telling what kind of damage they''d be able to do.

How to implement the Principle of Least Privilege

All you need to do is control who knows certain passwords and who doesn't, which sounds virtually impossible, unless you use Myki for MSPs to manage your MSP''s passwords.

Once you import all your passwords and invite your team members to join, you'll be able to quickly and easily share those passwords with the appropriate users, based on the appropriate level of access they require.

When a new employee joins your MSP, you can just grant them access to the passwords they need, and when an employee leaves, all you need to do is revoke that access. It''s as simple as that.
