This week is especially exciting for us, as we just opened our new Microfabrication Experience Center. Located in the ZEISS Innovation Hub, the center offers state-of-the-art equipment for product demonstrations, feasibility testing and training. We also host events for up to 100 people on a total of 270 square meters - many events are also offered online. Thus, visitors can experience all aspects and facets of 3D Microfabrication. And we again have some fascinating success stories about 3D Microfabrication for you. For example, micrometer-sized aspherical lenses produced by Nanoscribe’s 3D printers. These tiny lenses can replace bulky microscope objectives in spectroscopic measurements of single point-like light emitters. We also show 3D-printed fiber-to-chip couplers and their potential applications for integrated photonics in optical communication, computing and sensing.

3D printing of the world''s smallest endoscope 

Researchers at the Universities of Stuttgart and Adelaide developed the world’s smallest 3D-printed miniature endoscope. In collaboration with medical research centers in Australia, the team worked on a novel microoptical tool for detecting plaques, thrombi and cholesterol crystals inside human arteries. Using a Nanoscribe 3D printer, they fabricated the endoscope with a width of only 125 microns to pave the way for endoscopic examinations inside blood vessels with less than half a millimeter in diameter. The device could thus help to reduce the risk of a stroke or a heart attack.

With the Japanese website launch, we now offer nanoscribe.com in four different languages: English, German, Chinese and Japanese. With the addition of the last two languages in 2020, Nanoscribe underlines the importance of the Asian region for high-precision additive manufacturing in emerging markets such as microoptics or integrated photonics. Together with our subsidiary Nanoscribe China Co. Ltd. in Shanghai and the exclusive distributor Japan Laser Corporation (JLC) for the Japanese market, we strive to become more transparent and tangible for customers and partners in the Asia-Pacific countries.

New printing material for high refractive microoptics

Nanoscribe introduces the new IP-n162 photoresin, a printing material with special properties for microoptical elements such as microlenses, prisms or complex freeform optics. The photoresin features a high refractive index in combination with a high dispersion, which corresponds to a low Abbe number. These properties are particularly beneficial for the 3D Microfabrication of innovative microoptical designs, even without rotational symmetry and compound three-dimensional optical systems. With a low absorption in the infrared region, the photoresin is the best choice for infrared microoptics, but also for applications where low absorption losses are critical such as optical communication, quantum technology and photonic packaging.

On-chip 3D printing of hollow-core photonic waveguides

An international research team presents a novel concept of an on-chip light cage that confines and guides light diffraction-free over centimeter distances. Using Nanoscribe’s 3D printers, the scientists fabricated hollow-core 3D photonic waveguides directly on a silicon photonic chip. The microscopic structure consists of finest strands arranged in two rings around a hollow core. Together with the integration on the chip, the strong light-matter interaction possible in this light cage opens up new applications. This innovation is particularly promising for gas and liquid-based detection as well as for bioanalytics and quantum technology.
