NOMINATIONS OPEN for the 2020 Lydia Martinez Multidisciplinary Collaboration Awards
The Award recognizes outstanding service by professionals involved in coordinated response efforts against sexual violence in New York City. We want to honor individuals who have made a significant contribution to the welfare and rights of sexual assault survivors; one individual from each of the sectors listed below will be recognized at the Alliance's Celebration of Excellence Awards Ceremony in May:
- Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE/SANE)
- Volunteer Rape Crisis Advocate
- Direct Service Provider/Rape Crisis Professional
- Practicing Attorney (Civil or Criminal)
- Law Enforcement Professional
- Preventionist (including Enough is Enough providers)
- Emerging Leader
Awardees will be selected via a selection committee comprised of previous honorees. This committee will review nominations and determine awardees through discussion and collaboration. Click here to complete the nomination and submit your entry. Nominations are due February 7th.
Announcing the Alliance Legal Services Program - Now Accepting Clients! We are thrilled to announce that the Alliance Legal Services Program (ALSP) is now accepting clients. ALSP works to address the critical legal needs of survivors of sexual assault by providing in-house legal consultations, representation, and referrals in issues that may arise in the aftermath of trauma. Job Opportunity: Legal Intern Spring 2020
The Alliance is seeking unpaid Legal Interns during the spring semester of 2020 to support ALSP in its effort to provide in-house legal assistance to survivors of sexual assault across all five boroughs. The Legal Interns will assist with client intakes, case preparation, legal research and writing, managing case files, as well as legal advocacy in court proceedings if the law student is eligible to do so under N.Y. The Alliance is seeking an individual experienced in sexual violence prevention who would like to step into a leadership position at the Alliance. Depending on applicant skills and experience, this individual will spend approximately 60% of their time supervising the Alliance prevention programs and 40% of their time supervising policy work and organizational operations. February SAFE Alliance Quarterly Meeting & Training - Telemedicine The NYC SAFE Alliance provides a forum for sexual assault forensic examiners to share information, expand skills, network, and connect. This quarter, Nancy Harris, NP, the TeleSAFE Director of Operations will present on this innovative telemedicine program designed to provide comprehensive care twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, to victims of sexual assault or abuse who are taken to hospitals that do not have their own SAFE program. Condensed Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) Course This condensed Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) course is intended for social workers and other professionals that work directly with survivors of sexual violence or supervise individuals that do. This condensed course provides an overview of the 40-hour SAFE course and will discuss what survivors can expect when getting a forensic rape examination such as history taking, documentation, photography, and evidence collection. March 2020 Skills Lab Skills Lab intends to help clinicians practice as SAFE examiners in New York State. In order to become a NYS Certified SAFE Examiner, healthcare providers must complete the NYS DOH didactic course as well as a supervised "preceptorship" experience. View all the information here.
Continuing Nursing Education Credits have been applied for through the International Association of Forensic Nurses, an accredited Approver of continuing nursing education through the American Nurses Credentialing Center Commission on Accreditation.

Public Health, 16(23): e16234861, 2019: This review article takes a developmental-relational approach to examine processes through which early relational trauma and violence in relationships may lead to substance use. The authors examine how early exposure to violence in relationships can impact neurological development, specifically through interference with physiological mechanisms, brain structure and functioning, and neuropsychological development across the lifespan. Together for Girls. 2019: Together for Girls, in partnership with The Equality Institute and the Oak Foundation, undertook a systematic review of proven solutions and best practices to prevent and respond to sexual violence against children and youth (SVAC). Celebrating the Life of Bernice Sandler: The Godmother of Title IX One year ago, Bernice Sandler, arguably the "Godmother of Title IX" passed away at the age of 90. Politico's article celebrates the incredible story of Sandler's journey in addressing gender-based discrimination at colleges and universities. With the attention from Congress, specifically Congresswoman Edith Green of Oregon, Sandler's advocacy for gender equality became legislation that eventually turned into Title IX in 1972.
House Reps Introduce Last-Minute Bill That Would Block Proposed Title IX Regulations Before Their Imminent Release Last month Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin of Michigan introduced a bill that aims to block Secretary of Education DeVos' potential Title IX regulation changes. The bill, H.R. 5388, co-sponsored by Representatives Ayanna Pressley, Jackie Speier, and Annie Kuster, states that: "the Secretary of Education may not issue or enforce certain rules that weaken the enforcement of the prohibition of sex discrimination applicable under Title IX." The bill has been assigned to the Committee on Education and Labor, but there is no way of knowing whether the Committee will proceed to review the bill.
A Young Woman Uses Her Girl Scout Project to Address Campus Sexual Violence in Illinois High school senior, Therese Malinowski has created a sexual assault database for Illinois colleges and universities called Project Dandelion. She says: "It's an online resource for students that organizes all sorts of information about sexual assault on college campuses." In the past few weeks this project was handed over to the Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault. Malinowski, now focused on her college applications for the Fall of 2020, is hopeful that her project could turn into a national database to help incoming students know the resources available to them on campus.

Victim Intervention Program: Advocate Training Announcement -- New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center The Victim Intervention Program's advocates assist survivors of sexual assault, family and intimate partner violence in the emergency department of New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Free Spanish Domestic Violence Women's Group -- Crime Victims Treatment Center This free Spanish Domestic Violence Women's group is scheduled to begin in February and will run from 8-10 weeks depending on start date.
