The Westminster (MD) Volunteer Fire Department has partnered with school administrators and career counselors to offer free training in local schools and show students the benefits of being a volunteer firefighter. They have also started moving to middle schools to expand and promote their junior program. The department''s advice is to build junior programs up so teens have a place to go where they can learn about tools, fire equipment, and get their hands dirty. The NVFC recently partnered with the U.S. Fire Administration and Michigan State Firemen''s Association for a Facebook Live event. Winter Fire Safety: Engaging & Educating Your Community During COVID-19 provided tips to engage with your community on fire safety during the pandemic. You can watch the recording here.

Tips:

Looking for "outside of the box" ways to recruit volunteers? So was Duane McKee, a volunteer firefighter in Pasadena, MD, who opened a nonprofit coffee shop. The Second Alarm Brewhouse recently opened to build support and awareness for the volunteer fire service. You can check out their web site here to learn more.

Training:

In honor of Carbon Monoxide (CO) Awareness Month, First Alert and the NVFC have partnered to create an online CO awareness and alarm training course, Protect Against the Silent Killer. It will be offered for free during the month of November. Register for the course through the NVFC''s Virtual Classroom here.

The holiday season is almost upon us, and with the pandemic this may be an even more stressful time than usual for emergency responders. Make sure your department''s members know where to get help if they are struggling. You can provide the NVFC''s Directory of Behavioral Health Professionals as a resource to find mental health providers ready and equipped to help firefighters, EMS providers, and their families.

To help combat sexual harassment and sexual violence in the fire service, the NVFC is offering On the Job and Off''s course The Way Forward: Ending Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence in the Fire Service free to all members of the fire and emergency services. Opportunities:

The deadline to nominate local government volunteers, including firefighters or EMS providers, for the Small Town America Civic Volunteer Award has been extended to September 15. The award highlights the importance of and need for community volunteers in localities under 5,000 in population. 100 honorees will each receive a CivicCMS web site for their local government, featuring custom volunteer modules, and the top three will win cash awards to help with recruitment and retention of local public service volunteers. The NVFC has partnered with TargetSolutions to bring NVFC members additional operational training and educational opportunities at no cost. COVID-19:

We continue to update our resources for first responders on COVID-19. You can find those resources here.
We created a survey to better understand the experiences of volunteer and combination fire, EMS, and rescue departments dealing with the outbreak of COVID-19. We ask that you take the survey each week so we can track changes over time. You can find the survey link and the latest results here.

Tips:

Many departments may feel that COVID-19 is scaring away potential recruits. In a recent article, FireRescue1 offers some uplifting news (and resources) here that you can use as a recruitment tool. Remind your potential recruits that not only will they be joining a department and giving back to their community, but they are also joining a family who can provide extra support in uncertain times.

The toolkit will include case studies from volunteer fire/EMS organizations, and we want to hear from you! Selected departments will have their success story featured in the toolkit to help inspire and motivate others.

The NVFC is pleased to announce that in January 2021, a new materials generator will be launched in the Make Me A Firefighter department portal.

What does that mean for you?

The new materials generator will offer new and improved templates to create campaign materials for your recruiting needs. The new platform will also provide a more user-friendly experience to make customizing outreach materials even easier.

Will my existing materials be available in the new generator?

Your existing materials will not be transferred to the new platform. Please log in to your account here and save any materials you''ve created to your device before mid-January to ensure your materials are not lost.
