Vintage Snack Sets exhibit

The Friends of the Fred Drummond Home are pleased to announce that a new Vintage Snack Sets exhibit will be on display during the month of August. Visitors to the Fred Drummond Home in Hominy can view many examples of vintage snack sets, often used by women while entertaining or hosting guests in their homes. There will be pieces from the 1940s through the 1970s, including sets made by Anchor Hocking, Hazel-Atlas, Royal Windsor, and Queen Anne. This exhibit is included with the regular admission fee. Will Rogers and Wiley Post Fly-In

On Saturday, August 10, Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch near Oologah will host its annual Will Rogers and Wiley Post Fly-In. Gates open at 7:30 a.m. with free admission, though donations are always welcome. The event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the 2,000-foot grass strip adjacent to Oologah Lake. Pilots will fly the Oklahoma skies and land on the grass strip, a few yards from the home where Will Rogers was born on November 4, 1879. Tours of the home and barn will also be available.

The fly-in commemorates the 84th anniversary of the deaths of Will Rogers and Wiley Post. Rogers and Post died in a plane crash near Point Barrow, Alaska, on August 15, 1935. This event also celebrates their dedication to the aviation industry. Pilots of antique aircraft, vintage warplanes, new and late model small aircraft, helicopters, and powered parachute planes will gather to showcase their aircraft and reminisce with fellow flyers. Visitors can get a close-up view of the planes and meet the pilots! There will also be a classic car and motorcycle show, Cherokee storytelling, activities for children, and food trucks. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. This event is sponsored by Cherokee Nation.

Victorian Tea Party at Horizon Hill

Visit Kingfisher on Saturday, August 10, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a Victorian Tea Party at Horizon Hill, the home of Oklahoma Territorial Governor A. J. Seay. Guests will be treated to a variety of traditional teas and snacks in the parlors of Horizon Hill. During the event, Dr. Lindsey Churchill, associate professor in the Department of History and Geography at the University of Central Oklahoma, will speak on the topic of women's movements. The cost for the Victorian Tea Party is $10, and payment must be received to secure your registration. Seating is limited to 30 guests. Please contact the Chisholm Trail Museum at 405-375-5176 to reserve your seat.

OHS Unveils New Grant Program

The OHS is proud to announce the creation of the Oklahoma Heritage Preservation Grant Program. This new grants-in-aid program will set aside $500,000 to award grants ranging from $1,000 to $20,000 to municipal, county, or tribal governments or nonprofit historical organizations registered with the Oklahoma Secretary of State. The grants will be specific to three categories: collections, exhibits, and programs. The online applications will open on Monday, September 9, 2019, and close on Friday, November 8, 2019, at 5 p.m., with award announcements being made in late January 2020.

"After 40 years working with community leaders in towns from Atoka to Woodward and Frederick to Wagoner, I know the collections are there that can help preserve the history of families, farms, businesses, schools, tribes, and the events that have shaped our state," said OHS Executive Director Dr. Bob Blackburn. "I am well aware of the passion for community history that can be tapped to leverage and add to the impact of small grants."

Administering the new grant program will be Nicole Harvey, a historian who has worked in the OHS administrative offices for seven years. Through this program, the OHS hopes to encourage improvement in the care of collections, create a higher quality of exhibits, and expand Oklahoma history programs at the local level, where a sense of community and the spirit of volunteerism are assets that can be tapped for historical purposes. The program will also foster a learning process that brings together trained, experienced museum and archival professionals with avocational volunteers and part-time employees who want to improve care of collections, learn techniques of preservation, and expand educational programs. Lastly, the program will allow for a statewide, online database that identifies collections, programs, and exhibits that will encourage the sharing of resources between institutions.

Reproduction Civil War-Era Quilt to be Raffled

The Friends of Honey Springs Battlefield received a special gift during the memorial service that honored the 156th anniversary of the Battle of Honey Springs on July 13, 2019. Kathy Dickson, OHS director of museums and historic sites, presented a hand-sewn reproduction of a United States Sanitary Commission quilt to the group. Dickson had pledged to reproduce one for the Friends organization when presenting a Civil War quilt workshop at the Visitor Center in November 2018. The Friends of Honey Springs Battlefield are now selling raffle tickets for the chance to win this one-of-a-kind quilt! Dickson and Preston Ware, OHS employee and reenactor, showcase the quilt in the photo at left.

"I have always wanted to make one, and it should be a good fundraiser for the battlefield leading up to the reenactment the first weekend in November," said Dickson. "The quilt is made from all-cotton fabric, and the patterns date to the early 1860s or before. Some of the fabric patterns are reproductions from the Sturbridge Village Museum in Massachusetts so they date to the 1830s. The ladies would have used whatever they could find to make quilts, but would have avoided fine fabrics like silk since these do not take rough handling well."

The drawing will be held after the Battle of Honey Springs Reenactment on Saturday, November 2, and you do not need to be present to win.

Aviation Day

On Saturday, August 17, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center in Enid will host Aviation Day, a hands-on event celebrating the history of flight, particularly in Oklahoma. The family-friendly activities will include foam flyer demonstrations by the Enid Chapter of Remote Controlled Model Aeronautics, paper airplane flying contests, balsa wood glider races, appearances by pilots from Vance Air Force Base, and some activities for budding aeronautical engineers. On view during the event will be a space suit from the Oklahomans and Space education trunk, provided by the Oklahoma History Center's Traveling Trunks program. Aviation Day is presented in partnership with Leonardo's Children's Museum.
