TestVectors Goes Open Source

TestVectors, a black-box test framework for Stratum-enabled switches, is now open source and available for Barefoot Tofino and Broadcom Tomahawk devices, as well as the bmv2 software switch. T-Mobile Poland Achieves Production Roll-Out of OMEC – ONF’s Open Source Mobile Evolved Packet Core

Last week we were excited to announce publicly that T-Mobile (Poland) achieved production roll-out of the ONF’s Open Mobile Evolved Core (OMEC) open source platform. This represents the industry’s first deployment of a production-grade open source Evolved Packet Core (EPC). 
 

“Our OMEC deployment provides us with a lightweight packet core providing connectivity, billing and charging at scale for a large number of fixed mobile subscribers. By taking the bold step of embracing open source as part of a new approach for building and deploying solutions, we are realizing a much lower total cost of ownership, rapid customizability, and greater transparency than we can achieve using any traditional EPC.”

The review period for COMAC Reference Design v0.5 will end on February 5th, 2020. 

As a reminder - RDs are specifications authored by the ONF partners and ultimately used by operators in their procurement and RFP processes.  Each RD specification details the motivation, architectural choices, elements of modularity, and details for assembling a particular open source solution.  RDs represent a key step in the process of driving ONF curated open source into production, and you can learn more about the RD process here.

ONF Working With O-RAN Alliance

With the dawn of 5G and continued success of the open networking movement, a lot of attention has become focused on the evolution of the Radio Access Network (RAN).  

The ONF is pleased to announce we are working with the O-RAN Alliance to the benefit of telecom operators globally. O-RAN Alliance is a worldwide, carrier-led effort to drive new levels of openness and intelligence into the radio access network of next generation wireless systems. Their core principles envision future RANs to be built upon virtualized network elements, white box hardware and standardized interfaces.  
 

 

ONF and O-RAN’s cooperation creates a symbiotic relationship benefiting both entities’ ecosystems. Executive Summary 

ONF is at a pivotal inflection point in its mission to catalyze a transformation of the networking industry. We have successfully delivered platforms and solutions that leverage disaggregation, merchant silicon, white box hardware systems and open source software; and in doing so, ONF is providing a highly disruptive value proposition to service providers and participating supply-chain companies. 

With ONF platforms and solutions entering tier-1 production networks in 2019, ONF’s model has now been proven and the tangible results are undeniable.  We as operators are transforming our networks, we are on a path to delivering new innovative solutions, and all this is being achieved while yielding notable capex and opex savings.

We clearly see the ecosystem for building and deploying networks changing.  Where we used to rely on incumbents’ proprietary products and solutions for network build-outs, all of our deployments of ONF platforms have used suppliers that have embraced building solutions based on merchant silicon, white boxes, and open source platforms.  A new ecosystem is emerging, and this represents the start of a major shift in the service provider landscape. With this shift, we see strong evidence that early adopting operators will have a competitive advantage. We also see that a new class of vendors is likely to emerge.  In all cases, forward thinking organizations will be best positioned to navigate this shift for competitive advantage.

This shift in the ecosystem represents a unique and compelling opportunity for both operators and suppliers.  For operators, this is a transformative opportunity to take back ownership of your network from incumbents, and in so doing increase top-line revenue while reducing expenses by as much as 25-40%.  For the supply chain, this represents a $73B new market opportunity over the next 5 years. These claims are substantiated later in this update, but suffice it to say that we as operators would not be investing in ONF and be as bullish as we are without having seen first hand that these claims are far from overblown.

Major Certification Program Advancements

 

 

ONF is pleased to announce the launch of the ONF Marketplace which features products that have completed testing and achieved certification as part of ONF's Continuous Certification Program. This unique program provides continual re-verification of member products as part of a BOM for the most current versions of ONF open source software platforms, demonstrating functionality and compatibility. The new ONF Marketplace is an ideal place for operators and end-users to identify the best options for selecting and building BOMs for ONF open source solutions.

New Updated Skills Certification Exam: OCSA-2.0

ONF is excited to introduce a major update to the ONF Certified SDN Associate (OCSA) program: OCSA-2.0. The OSCA program is designed to familiarize and certify engineers with the key components of disaggregated SDN networks, from white box switching to network operating systems, northbound and southbound interfaces, P4 and next-gen SDN interfaces, open source platforms and much more.  OCSA provides a strong foundation of vendor-neutral knowledge and skills validation for professionals wishing to advance their careers and certify their knowledge in the world of open source and SDN.  Since its debut in 2016, more than 1,300 engineers have been certified through the ONF's skills certification program.

This update was a community-driven effort led by Levi Perigo, Scholar in Residence at the Department of Computer Science, University of Colorado - Boulder. A warm thank you to Levi and the rest of the skills certification community for your efforts in this update initiative. 
 

 ONF Launches Continuous Certification Program




 

ONF is excited to announce our new Continuous Certification Program, which will enable supply chain vendors to embed their products for ongoing test and compliance certification with ONF''s open source software projects. ONF has taken the next step in responding to member and market needs beyond just CI/CD by reimagining certification testing, delivering more timely and concise visibility into compatibility between products and ONF platforms and projects. ONF is introducing the concept of Continuous Certification (CC) as an essential element of the testing lifecycle. 

Additionally, the Open Compute Project (OCP) is collaborating with ONF in this new program to promote the use of OCP-recognized open hardware in ONF solutions. Together, this collaboration will make it clear for end users how best to assemble world-class solutions leveraging both open hardware and open software components, thus driving wider adoption of comprehensive open networking solutions.

VOLTHA v2.5 Released
 

ONF is pleased to announce the release of VOLTHA v2.5. This release features a number of improvements, new features, workflow support  and tests, while also having dedicated time to a series of very important design discussions, laying the foundation for LTS releases in the future. 

VOLTHAT is an open source project to create a hardware abstraction for broadband access equipment. It supports the principle of multi-vendor, disaggregated, "any broadband access as a service" for the Central Office.

ONF's Continuous Certification Program is continually re-verifying supply chain products on a daily basis against the most recent versions of ONF open source software platforms, ensuring operators have a vibrant ecosystem of options for deploying ONF open source solutions. Five products have been certified for VOLTHA v2.5: Sercomm''s Glasfaser Modem, and Edgecore''s ASXvOLT16, ASGvOLT64, AS5712-54X, and AS6712-54X. 
 

Stratum v20.09 Released
 

ONF is delighted to announce the second Stratum release: 2020-09-30 (or 20.09 for short). This release supports P4Runtime 1.2.0 (on IANA-assigned service port 9559) and gNMI 0.7.0 with an expanded set of OpenConfig model paths (on IANA-assigned service port 9339).

Stratum now offers support for 8 different networking targets (ASICs, FPGAs, and CPUs) on over 20 different platforms (switches and servers). More details on the features included in this release as well as pre-built images (Debian packages and Docker containers) are available in the Stratum 2020-09-30 release notes.

Three hardware targets have been certified in the ONF Continuous Certification Program for Stratum v20.09: Edgecore''s AS7712-32X and Wedge100BF-32X, along with Inventec''s D5254. 
 

Congratulations to the newly elected members of the P4 Technical Steering Team (TST) for 2020 - 2021: Andy Fingerhut, Stefan Heule and Robert Soule! 

All three have been involved with technical work on P4 for several years, and we are delighted that they have agreed to serve the community in a leadership role. They have each been elected to a 2-year term and will be responsible for overseeing and managing all the technical decisions within the P4 project, along with the continuing members of the TST. Larry Peterson is also joining the TST as an ex-officio member representing ONF. 

A new P4 Advisory Board has also been created to provide strategic direction to the TST and serve as a liaison to the ONF Board. Nick McKeown, Guru Parulkar, Jennifer Rexford, Amin Vahdat, and Nate Foster will be serving as founding members.

The Spotlight on 5G Transformation with Open Source will take a deeper look at the various open source initiatives being implemented across both the RAN and Core mobile ecosystems, highlighting innovative disaggregated architectures that are being researched and pursued, and providing perspective and insight into the business impact of this massive transformation taking place across the mobile ecosystem. 

The deadline to submit abstracts for the ONF Spotlight - 5G Transformation with Open Source has been extended to Wednesday, July 15th. The ONF community is invited to participate as an integral part of the Spotlight Series. A committee of industry experts together with the ONF technical team will review submissions and assemble the program for each Spotlight. Don''t miss this opportunity to join us and share your experiences, engage with the community and gain new insights from peers across the globe.
