I'm not big on resolutions because I tend to let myself down. But hopes on the other hand... hopes I can handle. Carissa and I quickly talked through our hopes for the New Year (see above). For me, it goes a bit deeper. In 2020 I want (or... hope) to be more mindful of my body, of my emotions, and of the people around me. I tend to be a task-oriented person, sometimes to the detriment of the relationships around me, as well as the health of my own body (physically and mentally). Does anyone else love a well-thought-out list? I find that writing down to-dos gets me excited about what's to come. Every January I geek out over filling in a fresh calendar! I write down birthdays, color-coordinate my work and personal life tasks, and sticker that thing up (to make me extra excited for the good stuff yet to come). Taking time to write down tasks helps me focus on where I'm headed, and all the steps I need to take to get there. Sometimes lists make me feel overwhelmed. But today I'm feeling hopeful.

We hopped on a call with our friends at Chandran Gallery to brainstorm, and it quickly escalated from there!
If You Were Here Now was created to host a daily series of art therapy sessions from a variety of artists. The premise is to present sessions of live and instructional videos of artists doing projects that they find to be therapeutic in their own practice, using simple tools they have around the house or in their studios. Creating simple daily connections, sharing ideas, is a concept we want to uphold and champion in both times of disruption and normalcy.
While there is no fee to access the content, we are taking contributions. Artists will receive 100% of donations to use to help subsidize business costs, create more inspiring content, donate to an organization of their choosing, etc.

I''m slowly settling into our new (hopefully brief) reality of isolation. I''m still anxious and fearful about our uncertain future; I can''t help but think about all the potential implications of our situation. This week, I''ve found hope in being selective with my attention. Facing one thing at a time and placing one foot after the other. I''ve been working on being present with all of my thoughts & emotions, writing them down and seeing if they can help me learn something about myself.
I''m thankful for FaceTime, Zoom, Google Hangouts, & Skype (am I missing anything?), but I''m craving the physicality of personal connection.
My partner and I dated long-distance for two years until we finally joined each other here in California. He lived in Hawaii, I lived in Pennsylvania, and between us - the Pacific Ocean, and practically the entire continental US. The six-hour time difference made phone calls and FaceTime dates difficult and often frustrating. Instead, we found the old-school method of mailing letters to be just what we needed. I still have every letter he''s written to me. They meant so much to me then, and they mean so much to me now. Letters hold their value far after they''ve been sent.
It''s always been hard to be apart from my friends & family, but these days it''s even harder. We''ve just added a new feature to our website to help us all stay connected. In our current reality of self-isolation, it''s easy to feel useless, helpless, and like we''re constantly wasting time. Last September, Josh and I had a baby. We had been trying for some time, waiting and hoping, and finally, it happened.
The process has been really hard. All aspects really. Our baby has had some pretty intense medical needs. But this is not about that. She giggled the other day for the first time and all of the pain was replaced by a complete joy. If even just for a few fleeting moments.
There are lots of reasons to have a baby these days. Most of which are good. There are lots of reasons not to have a baby which is also a good idea if that is what is right for you.
One reason I wanted a baby was I deeply love my parents. And I wanted to feel what it was like to be on the other side. People always talk about what it is like to have a baby - that the world changes. As an outsider, I thought I understood, at least in concept, what the process would be like.
I knew it would be hard. I knew it would take some time to get in a rhythm. I knew that it would strain my relationships with other people.
Sometime in the not so distant past, humans discovered a shrimp species with 12 different color receptors (receptors for detecting light and turning it into energy). Humans have 3, dogs have 2, some birds have 4. There is a Radiolab podcast about this little shrimp. When I first heard it, I imagined what it would be like to see with this range of color.
I couldn''t not lean into these new feelings - Getting a soft high every time I look into the eyes of this new being. I obsessed over how she was the most complicated thing my body would ever make and I was unconscious throughout the production.
This baby has highlighted the fragility of life for me. I am savoring the tender fleeting miraculous moments we have together with a new sense of presence and wonder. Like seeing a rainbow for the first time.

What does it look like to truly belong?
I''ve been reflecting on this question for a while now. What does belonging feel like? What does home really mean?
My family moved around a lot when I was younger. I think it''s because my dad really valued learning. Whenever he got to a place of feeling stagnant, we packed up and went somewhere else. The first time, I was 7, and I don''t remember it that much. But, when I was 16, we moved to the opposite side of the country, and it shook me up. This move created extreme social anxiety and disorientation, which caused me to re-assess my whole self and my understanding of place.
Fast forward a few years (and a few more moves), I ended up doing my master''s thesis on the topic of belonging. It turns out that no matter how rooted people are, they''re always still searching for home.
I moved to California about two and a half years ago. I feel the most "at home" I have ever felt. I really love the Bay Area, all the physical parts of it, as well as the community that I''ve found here. But I think my sense of rootedness comes from something deeper - a developed knowledge of my own self-worth. I''m still navigating what belonging truly looks like, but I know one thing for sure - I belong right here... wherever here is (because there will probably be many more moves in my lifetime). Which is why we''ve made these socks. They''re a sweet reminder to always trust yourself, your process, and your life. Xo, Amberly
