A romantic melodrama, a light-hearted short opera and a sinfully jazzy number...
Tickets are now available to book for a trio of live performances as part of our Switch ON season: a dramatic concert staging of Beethoven''s famed Fidelio, and a playful double bill of Handel''s light-hearted opera Acis & Galatea and Brecht/Weill''s satirical ''sung ballet'' The Seven Deadly Sins.
Measures are in place to ensure your safety and comfort when attending our live performances, including limited capacities, face coverings (unless exempt), one-way systems and socially-distanced seating arrangements.
Book now...
Fidelio | Concert Performance Ludwig van Beethoven 29 Nov - 12 Dec | Leeds Town Hall
Fidelio is actually Leonore, a noblewoman who risks everything to save her husband who is unjustly imprisoned by a tyrannical political opponent... Inspired by a true story from the French Revolution, the themes of liberty and freedom that run through Beethoven''s only opera are poignant to the world we live in today.
Acis & Galatea | Double Bill
George Frideric Handel 11 - 21 Nov | Leeds Playhouse
The double bill opens with a contemporary take on Handel's light-hearted short opera. The nymph Galatea and the shepherd Acis are falling in love but when the monstrously jealous Polyphemus appears on the scene, their happiness is threatened...
The Seven Deadly Sins | Double Bill
Kurt Weill 11 - 21 Nov | Leeds Playhouse
After the interval, we meet Anna and Anna in Weill''s playfully shimmering ''sung ballet''. Sent away for seven years to make money for their struggling family, they journey between seven cities from Philadelphia to San Francisco, encountering the seven deadly sins...
Ensuring the safety of our audiences...
COVID-19 audience guidance

Fidelio & The Seven Deadly Sins
View in browser
In lockdown, we livestream...
Despite the latest setback, we are determined to keep making and sharing music with and for you, our audience. The lockdown means we have had to postpone the Handel/Weill double bill at Leeds Playhouse and cancel live performances of Fidelio at Leeds Town Hall.
However we are excited to announce that we are now able to livestream The Seven Deadly Sins and Fidelio, as well release Whistle Stop Opera: Cinderella meaning you can still enjoy these fantastic productions from the comfort of your home!
We''ve also made the difficult decision to postpone Parsifal in Spring 2021, but we are pleased to say that this will be replaced by a new event featuring the music of Wagner's Ring, conducted by Richard Farnes.
If you are a ticket booker for a rescheduled or cancelled event you will be contacted by the box office holding your booking, giving you available options, including a full refund. Bookers of The Seven Deadly Sins and Fidelio will receive free access to the corresponding live streams.

''Can I call on Baba Bach and my ancestors to collaborate in the same space?'' - Abel Selaocoe, cellist
As both a classical musician and an African musician, Abel Selaocoe asks ''Where is home?'' As part of his Opera North Resonance residency, the award-winning cellist worked on music influenced by different stringed instruments from the African continent.
Our Resonance scheme, launched in 2017, offers time, space and resources for professional artists from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds working in any musical genre to develop new ideas. This week we announce the six exciting projects selected for the Lockdown Edition of the scheme, where ideas and collaborations will evolve under current social distancing and travel regulations...
Explore Resonance
From classically-trained singer Keertan Kaur Rehal bringing traditional South Asian art-song into the 21st century, to an innovative multi-sensory performance for the eyes, ears and nose from Thabo, the Resonance scheme encourages artists to take their work in new directions and to experiment with collaborators and new ideas.
From Resonance to world premiere...
Following on from his work on an early Resonance project, Jasdeep Singh Degun premiered his concerto for sitar and orchestra, Arya, with the Orchestra of Opera North in February.
Explore the power and universality of music as Jasdeep recounts his influences, and experience of working on Arya.

Enjoy music inspired by nature
View in browser
The music we hear is often inspired by nature.
Today is World Environment Day and we invite you to explore how the natural world has been depicted through music, from epic operas to soothing lullabies...
Jan?cek's tragic opera Katya Kabanova takes place in an isolated Russian town, on the banks of the Volga river. Harnessing the power of a large orchestra to paint overwhelming effects in nature, from glistening water to a violent storm, Jan?cek wrote that when he was composing the opera 'the work flowed from my pen just like the beautiful river Volga''.
Watch the elemental power of nature depicted by the Orchestra of Opera North as they rehearse the dramatic opening from our 2019 production.
Listen to the swell of the sea in Britten''s native Suffolk in this excerpt of ''Dawn'' from The Sea Interludes.
Elaborately scored for an impressively large orchestra, Wagner represents nature from the very opening notes of the Ring cycle. Listen out for the rising melodies of the horns at the beginning of Das Rheingolddepicting the glittering waters of the river Rhine, experience a powerful storm in the opening of Die Walk?re, and spot the birdsong in Siegfried(from 35:08).
Take in the natural world with Alasdair Roberts'' beautiful lullaby based on an English translation of a Scottish Gaelic lyric.
Behind the scenes with Jamie Saye
''If we can achieve so much in 10 weeks in response to the outbreak of COVID-19, imagine what we can do in 10 years to respond to global warming and climate change.''
- Jamie Saye, Senior Technician
Meet the Chair of our Green Team and
champion of all things environmental.
The music of mountains
''The first movement of Alban Berg's Three Orchestral Pieces almost seems to capture the mountain breathing...''
- Garry Walker
Our Music Director designate takes us on a journey through the mountains in the second of his explorations of music and the environment.

Creating extraordinary experiences. Every day.
View in browser
Dear Amelia Hill,
At Opera North we are now moving to a new phase of responding to the COVID crisis. The past weeks have been dominated by responding to the immediate fallout of this situation and readying ourselves to weather the long-term financial impact that we know is coming. We are incredibly grateful to you: our supporters, funders and audiences, who have stood by us in this uncertain time.
As we look ahead, it is important that we ask ourselves a simple question: what do we stand for? If we are to survive, adapt and flourish, we need to be clear what this Company exists to do. The answer we have come back to is simple:
To create extraordinary experiences. Every day.
Live or digitally, in classrooms, theatres, homes and public spaces; we will continue to share music with people of all ages and backgrounds. To ensure we stay true to this very simple core purpose, we have set out our key priorities and I wanted to share those with you.
As we plan, we also want to ask you, our valued audience, what will you look for in music in the coming months? To start this conversation we'd be grateful if you could complete this short survey.
Yours sincerely,
Richard Mantle OBE
Opera North General Director

Dear Amelia Hill,
We are very sorry to announce the postponement of all mainstage productions due to tour in Autumn 2020 and Winter 2021. We are determined to keep making and sharing music. Planning is underway for a new Autumn season of live and digital work created within the restrictions of social distancing. Today we announce the first of these projects: a soundwalk for Leeds. We are also planning a new mainstage tour from January 2021, tailored to respond to the ongoing need for social distancing for audiences, performers and backstage staff. We will share news about this in the Autumn.
Ticket holders will be contacted as soon as possible by the Box Office you booked with, to refund all bookings. Please be aware this may take some time due to limited staffing. If you're paying for tickets by Direct Debit in Leeds*, the Opera North Box Office will call you. In the meantime we hope our FAQs may help answer refund queries.
Thank you for your support and understanding at this most challenging time. We can't wait to share music with you again in the very near future.
