The Gallery re-opened on Tuesday 14 July 2020 and we have been encouraged by the number of people that have visited us and their kind comments about being open again.

The procedures that we have had to introduce to keep our visitors, staff and volunteers safe have worked well and we are advising visitors to wear a face covering when visiting the Gallery.

Students Lucy Wright, Ellie Bird, Jess Stables, Poppy Wiseman and Rowan Meredith from Greater Brighton Met College and Northbrook Met College will be exhibiting their work in the
Wilson Studio.

The exhibition will showcase a varied mix of styles ranging from portraiture, to the abstract figurative, landscapes and 3D works.

The students say "We are a group of Foundation students from The MET colleges, sadly the last few months and our end of year show was cancelled due to Coronavirus but the Oxmarket has provided us with the opportunity to showcase what we've achieved in Lockdown. We think it's a great example of what students can produce, despite circumstances and to encourage the Arts, for both young people wanting to study creative subjects and those who wish to explore the Arts when the situation currently seems uncertain."

All the students have achieved Diplomas this year and are progressing onwards to a mix of Leicester DMU, Glasgow School of Art and University Arts, London.

''Unity'' by John Gillespie
14 July - 23 August

John Gillespie is a marine welder and fabricator and being unable to work because of Lockdown has found time to try some metal sculpting. The result is 'Unity'. A sculpture dedicated to all keyworkers during Covid-19.

John says "It represents the coming together of so many people for one cause creating a web to defend as strong as steel. I started with the head and shoulders and the idea of the keys came from some metal art I saw many years ago and as you can't buy stainless keys I had to manufacture them.

I started to stamp keyworker roles onto them and through Facebook, requests were received from workers far and wide requesting key roles to be added.

I have always intended to donate 'Unity' and the decision was made to try to place her where she can benefit all local people within Chichester. This process is well underway but is still on-going.

'Unity' has been a rollercoaster of emotions for me and I find thank you to be inadequate to describe the help I have received from MMP Polishers, Oxmarket Gallery, those involved in sorting her final location and the donations received in metal and plaques, etc. It's the unity of all involved that has made this happen, all I did was to shape some steel. Thank you to everyone for your help and support through these times."

Jacqui Lauder BA (Hons)

''Special Things''

Jacqui Lauder loves the use of colour, shade and playing with perspectives. Having left art college before completion in her early 20''s, Jacqui stayed away from art till her mid 50s when she decided to complete her degree in an emphatic out pour of creativity, receiving her BA(Hons) degree. Since then, she has flourished and found her very own unique, expressive and cheeky style. ''Special Things'' see''s Jacqui focus on the aspects of art which have brought a smile to her face throughout COVID-19. You will see passion, colour, nature, as well as her now renown experiments with mixed media.

An exhibition of ring-linking (chain mail) jewellery fashioned from natural and anodised aluminium, silver, titanium and niobium and brass.

Moira started making jewellery 10 years ago and in 2012 she discovered ring-linking, learning the various techniques used in chain mail and has continued to enjoy exploring how these could be used for designing and making jewellery.

It''s been lovely to see our regular visitors returning to the Gallery and there has been a high number of new visitors, which is always encouraging.

The procedures that we have had to introduce to keep our visitors, staff and volunteers safe have worked well and from Saturday 8 August, visitors must wear a face covering when visiting the Gallery.

From Tuesday 11 August to Sunday 23 August 2020 you will have the opportunity to see the entries that were received for the ''Knockout Lockdown Art Competition''. Over 80 pieces of artwork will be on display.

Please note that on Sunday 16 and Sunday 30 August the Gallery will be closed. We apologise for the incovenience this may cause.

Anne Milton & Karen Wilson
11 August - 23 August

This exhibition displays the work of both Anne Milton and
Karen Wilson who have very different in styles of art.

Anne's work is either figurative or abstract in oils and her work on display will be based on sketches drawn in her life drawing group superimposed on abstract grounds. Anne considers that oils are an expressive media and the fluidity is well suited to her chosen style.

Anne Milton was encouraged to develop her artistic skills by art tutor colleagues whilst they all worked in the Education Department at Feltham Young Offenders Centre in the 1990s. This led to a degree from the University of the Creative Arts, Farnham in 2001.

Karen enjoys painting but her true love is working in textiles where her needle and fabric are her paintbrush and canvas. Karen is now living in Cornwall hence some of her mixed media work is of the Padstow and Port Isaac area near to where she now lives.

Peter Goodhall is exhibiting for the first time in Chichester. He is a fine art graduate and recognised professional artist. Since his first one-man exhibition in 1980 he has been widely exhibited and holds a collection of international awards.

A life long fascination with the sea combined with the benefit of a cliff top studio for many years has produced his strong passion for marine painting. This exhibition embraces the varying styles that Peter uses in his painting. With interesting and highly crafted techniques he balances a natural harmony with superb realism on his large contemporary waterscapes whilst also creating much more traditional and subtly atmospheric smaller paintings.

Stitchmakers
Edges and Boundaries & Weald and Downland
6 October - 11 October 2020

Stitchmakers are a group of textile artists who wish to promote 'Stitch' through the production of artwork for display.

They agree a theme and respond to it individually, and in doing so demonstrate the breadth of their textile practice. They meet monthly (pre Covid) and are excited to see the direction each of them are taking.

They have taken two themes for this Exhibition - Edges and Boundaries, and the Weald and Downland Living Museum.

Chinese Painting Group
6 October - 11 October 2020

Chinese Watercolours: an exploration of the versatile Chinese brush by members of The Chinese Painting Group.

The Chinese Painting Group is a local art group that meets near Chichester (Lavant Memorial Hall, Pook Lane). On display is a fusion of traditional Chinese watercolour and ink painting techniques and materials with an "East meets West" style. Subjects include flowers and birds, landscape and figures.

The group is a member of the UK Chinese Brush Painters Society.

Colourworkers - Vivid
13 October - 1 November 2020

Returning to the Gallery for her third year is local printmaker and surface designer, Tori McLean. Joining her from the Colourworkers Collective will be two other members of the Society of Design Craftsmen, Anita Bell and Arlene Shawcross.

Their 'Vivid' Exhibition will bring together contemporary stitched paperworks by Anita Bell, screenprinted and hand-painted silks by Tori McLean and constructed and stitched textiles by Arlene Shawcross. All three artisans share a passion for richly coloured contemporary works of art and have work held in private and public collections in the UK and abroad.

Anita is a member of the International Association of Papermakers and Artists and creates one-off pieces using hand dyed, painted or recycled papers embellished with stitch.

Shakkei, a Japanese garden term for the "borrowed view" beyond the garden and Ikedori, meaning "captured alive", are the inspiration for each piece of her work, reflecting the constantly changing light, particularly at dawn and dusk.

Quick sketches and watercolour studies are used by Anita to try to capture the atmosphere of a fleeting moment that is elusive and ever- changing. Using a thin thread as a medium, the details of imaginary landscapes are drawn out using dense lines of stitch, overlaid like paint, to build up depths of colour.

Tori will be exhibiting larger examples of her hand-printed and hand-coloured series of silk paintings that are inspired by her love for Japanese kimonos. Each work is uniquely hand coloured, taking several days to screenprint and paint, ensuring each hand-painted print is a one-off design. Designs can also be tailored to individual colour requirements for a particular home setting.

Arlene creates beautiful individually designed and stitched pieces, each one a unique piece of textile art. Her work is lively and colourful and is inspired by her love of music and roses.

Dear Jackson,

The Oxmarket is about to have a number of firsts. We are truly excited about the forthcoming Philip Jackson exhibition. The world renowned sculptor will be exhibiting for the first time at the Oxmarket, Chichester to help raise funds for "Refresh" our appeal to upgrade and improve the Oxmarket Gallery. The exhibition will consist of over 28 sculptures large and small and will be on display from Tuesday 13^th October to Sunday 1^st November.

Philip Jackson, Britain's greatest living figurative sculptor was born in Inverness and works out of his busy studio in West Sussex. Last year Jackson was commissioned to create the National Emergency Services Memorial (NESM). Backed by the Duke of Cambridge, it comprises six life-size-and-a-half figures representing leading emergency services and the NHS, plus a dog to represent all animals that work with those services. The maquette (model) of NESM will be shown publicly for the first time at Oxmarket Gallery.

The Oxmarket is thrilled to present a special exhibition of sculptures by Philip Jackson in aid of our "Refresh" appeal.

Philip Henry Christopher Jackson DL is a sculptor, noted for his modern style and emphasis on form. His sculptures appear in numerous UK cities, as well as Argentina and Switzerland. He is well known for his major outdoor pieces, such as statues of Bobby Moore, Sir Alf Ramsey, RAF Bomber Command Memorial, London, The Young Mozart in Chelsea and The Jersey Liberation Sculpture. His sources of inspiration include Jacob Epstein and Auguste Rodin and he has worked with Henry Moore, Oscar Nemon and Kenneth Armitage.

On 1 April 2008, Jackson was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of West Sussex. In 2009 he was appointed Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) in the 2009 Queen''s Birthday Honours List.

Author, Tim Bouquet is a journalist living in West Sussex. Specialising in investigative features in a variety of fields from the arts to international organised crime and major profiles, his work has appeared in The Times Magazine, The Telegraph Magazine and Vanity Fair and is syndicated globally.

Limited signed copies will be available to buy at the gallery for ?35.

"Refresh" - Upgrading and Improving Oxmarket Gallery

"Refresh" is a major fundraising project for Oxmarket Gallery, a largely volunteer-run charity whose mission is to promote art and support artists in an inclusive manner. Oxmarket provides a range of accessible exhibition spaces for artists, art societies and groups. It curates exhibitions and runs events designed to encourage emerging artists to develop their practice. It also works with local schools and colleges, presents talks, musical ensembles, poetry recitals and much more.

This project will deliver improvements to a space where the wellbeing of the users will be dramatically enhanced. This much-loved community facility needs urgent updating to ensure the Gallery spaces continue to meet the needs of its users and visitors, and to safeguard its sustainability going forward. It needs to upgrade the facilities and increase gallery space, replace the toilets and include a disabled toilet, improve the entrance area and improve the lack of external and internal signage.

Annual income comes from gallery hire and small donations from the public. This does not allow for 'capital works' so this appeal is to local individuals, trusts, foundations, and statutory sources. Oxmarket does not have the resources to hold fundraising events, so our fundraising strategy is very focused, and the only event is the Philip Jackson CVO Exhibition. Chichester District Council and Chichester City Council are both supporting the campaign.

The sculptures exhibited will be available for sale as well accompanying posters, cards and the new book.

We are in the process of creating a JustGiving account to encourage and promote online donations, which we hope to have up an running next week.

New Gallery Manager

We are delighted to announce we have a new Gallery Manager who joins this month. Abigail Day, who has an MA in Contemporary Curation plus extensive and varied experience working in the arts for a range of organisations, predominantly registered charities. This has included ensuring smooth day-to-day gallery operations, managing and recruiting volunteers and working with artists. She also has experience in audience development and generating creative marketing collateral to attract income (often on tight budgets!) Most recently she has been working at the Royal Society of Sculptors and Candida Stevens Gallery. Abi has superb social media skills and has built up a network of artists from her previous experience, some of whom have exhibited at Oxmarket. She very much looks forward to meeting our loyal following of artists and visitors alike.

The Christmas countdown is on and excitement is building up. Since our reopening, the Oxmarket has been buzzing with visitors getting their shopping in order in-between viewing our exhibitions.

Richard trained as a Blacksmith at Brinsbury and Hereford Colleges, forming a friendship with Peter Fenton, a well-known local Farrier and Blacksmith formerly of Slindon Forge, a man who is brimming with enthusiasm and experience.

Other key influences for Richard are the people he has met at major blacksmithing events both here in the U.K. and in Ukraine and the varied work they produce.

Hannah Strange
8 September - 20 September

An exhibition of paintings of things seen in a slightly different way including: peregrines flying over tourist maps of Chichester, the cathedral looking like graffiti on a brick wall and local sailing scenes with dramatic lighting.

As a returning local (she spent much of her childhood in the Chichester area), Hannah Strange is excited to be showing her work on her home patch especially as so many of her works have strong connections with the region.

Hannah works in acrylic supplemented with pen. Her techniques can result in pieces that have the appearance of gentle watercolour washes but others make use of much stronger impressionistic mark making.

The frames and mounts in many pieces are an integral part of the work, being embellished with images which supplement the central piece or with patterns in colours that compliment the picture. She also uses composite techniques consisting of painted surfaces, cut out images applied to these which then overlap with the mounts.

Hannah says "There is lots to amuse and think about in this show; the pieces are designed to be decorative but also to give the viewer something to reflect on."

The pictures are all for sale and are modest in size and price!

Belinda Midgley

Belinda returns to the Gallery with her second exhibition of the year and will once again be displaying her animal portraits in
pencil and acrylic.

Lynn Nicholls (Southsea Mudlark)

Lynn Nicholls (Southsea Mudlark) started her career as a set designer for the B.B.C before teaching in several Hampshire colleges. Lynn is a member and studio holder at Art Space Portsmouth and exhibits with the Southern Ceramics Group. She makes functional, thrown or slab built decorative earthenware and particularly enjoys exploring colour, line and decorative imagery.

Southsea Mudlark ceramics are eco and vegan friendly.

The Gallery is very happy to welcome the Society of Designer Craftsmen to the Oxmarket for their celebratory exhibition 'Into The Light'. This exhibition will bring together exciting work from over 30 designer-makers working in contemporary crafts including textiles, ceramics, glass, wood, paper, silver and jewellery.
