Pictured: Andrew, Marine Corps veteran, and Fenrir
Hi Gabriel,
Since he was a young boy Andrew wanted to serve in the United States military. His dream came true when he enlisted in the Marine Corps, which he credits with helping him "grow into a man."
Despite being a top recruit, Andrew came to realize that military life was not all that he had dreamed. A severe depression set in and he made the difficult decision to separate from service after completing his tour of duty.
Andrew started therapy and college, both of which helped him turn around his life. Still, something was missing. That''s when the young Marine veteran decided to adopt a companion dog.
Fenrir was a large, four year-old Shepherd mix in the care of one of our San Diego shelter partners. He had fears and anxieties of his own, and needed a special person to help him heal. Andrew met him and was smitten.
"Then I brought him home and life has been better ever since."
Fenrir is always by Andrew''s side and has been a great comfort during stressful times. And in return, the big dog gets something that he desperately needs as well.
"If anything," Andrew says, "I've given a him a place to be safe and a place to be loved."
Because of you veterans like Andrew have hope with the unconditional acceptance of a companion dog or cat. And the most overlooked shelter animals, like Fenrir, have the promise of loving, forever homes.
