For most of us, the last couple of months have brought a dramatic change in habits, involving long periods of time alone or with family. How has that affected you? How have you entertained yourself? Reading, making music, Zooming friends, working from home? We'd love to see what you''ve been doing, and how you've been weathering the storm.

All capture methods and processes are welcome.

We are delighted that Aline Smithson will jury this exhibit. She will select 35 images for exhibition in our Middlebury, Vermont gallery and another 35 for our Online Gallery. All 70 images will be reproduced in the exhibition catalog. 

ABOUT THE JUROR

Aline is the founder and editor-in-chief of "Lenscratch", a daily journal on photographers and photography.

Aline Smithson is best known for her conceptual portraiture, which has been exhibited worldwide, including over 40 solo shows at institutions such as the Griffin Museum of Photography, the Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Shanghai, Lishui, and Pingyqo Festivals in China. Her work is held in a number of public collections and her photographs have been featured in numerous publications including the New York Times, The New Yorker, PDN (cover), the PDN Photo Annual, Communication Arts Photo Annual, Eyemazing, and Silvershotz magazines.

A photomontage tells a story by combining separate elements into a single composite image, creating a moment that never existed in reality, but one that suits the maker's artistic vision.

For this call for entries, we seek photomontage images of any subject. All capture and post processes are welcome.

We are very pleased that Tom Chambers will jury this exhibition. Tom will select up to 40 images for exhibition in our Middlebury, Vermont gallery and another 40 for our Online Gallery. All 80 images will be reproduced in the exhibition catalog.

ABOUT THE JUROR

Photographer Tom Chambers was raised in the Amish farm country of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He completed a B.F.A. in 1985 from The Ringling School of Art, Sarasota, Florida majoring in graphic design with an emphasis in photography. Since 1998, Tom has exhibited photomontage images from ten photographic series both nationally and internationally in twenty one solo exhibitions and over seventy group exhibitions.

Tom's photography is held in the collections throughout the world, and published in multiple publications and books. A retrospective book, Hearts and Bones, was released in the Fall of 2018, by Unicorn Publishing, London.

For this exhibit, we're looking for images whose success depends on the? quality?of the light. Whether light or dark, bright or dull, natural or artificial, the subject of these images is the magic, the possibilities, and the nuances of the light itself. In a fictional sense, a portal can become a magical doorway through time and space. Alone or in combination, they hold unlimited creative possibilities for photographers.

In these dark days, finding those things that bring us joy is particularly difficult, and never more important. Finding and sharing expressions of joy brings comfort to us all.
 
So please, make new photographs, or dig through your archives and share those moments of joy with a world that could surely use seeing them as well.

ABOUT THE JUROR

Amy Holmes George is a fine art photographer, teacher, and a past Executive Director of Texas Photographic Society (2013-2018). As a former tenured professor of photography and digital media at Stephen F. Austin State University, Amy has also held teaching appointments at Collin College, Baylor University and University of North Texas. Amy is a recent member of the National Board of Directors of the Society for Photographic Education (2013-2017) and a 2008 Fulbright grant recipient. She earned an MFA in photography from Clemson University and a BFA cum laude in photography and graphic design from Miami University.

Exhibited widely throughout the U.S. as well as in Italy, England, France and China, Amy''s work has been featured in over one hundred exhibitions and is housed in several permanent collections, including The Getty, The Kinsey Institute and the Fratelli Alinari Museum in Florence, Italy.

For Botanical, we're looking for images created in the landscape, studio, or garden that capture the spirit and character of plants, as well as our intimate connection to the plant world. All capture methods and processes are welcome.

ABOUT THE JUROR

"I create intimate portraits of place-the terrain, plants and indigenous elements that give a landscape character. I am drawn by a sense of mystery, quietude and emotional connection with place, and seek to reveal both the unexpected and overlooked in nature's details."

Lee Anne White is a fine art photographer whose work is rooted in the landscape. In addition to exhibiting and publishing her work, she teaches landscape, botanical and creativity workshops for Maine Media Workshops and Madeline Island School of the Arts, as well as on Amelia Island and in New Mexico. She has photographed and authored numerous books on landscape architecture and garden design, is the former editor-in-chief of Fine Gardening magazine, and has photographed feature stories for dozens of magazines including Garden Design, Better Homes and Gardens, Landscape Architecture and Sunset. Lee Anne earned a master's degree in creative studies at the State University of New York/Buffalo State and a bachelor's degree in journalism and commercial art at Brenau University.

ABOUT THE JUROR

Ann M. Jastrab is the Executive Director at the Center for Photographic Art (CPA) in Carmel, California.  CPA strives to advance photography through education, exhibition and publication. These regional traditions-including mastery of craft, the concept of mentorship, and dedication to the photographic arts-evolved out of CPA''s predecessor, the renowned Friends of Photography established in 1967 by iconic artists Ansel Adams, Wynn Bullock and Cole Weston. While respecting these West Coast traditions, CPA is also at the vanguard of the future of photographic imagery. Before coming onboard at CPA, Ann was the gallery manager at Scott Nichols Gallery in San Francisco where she incorporated contemporary artists with the living legends photography.
Besides being a curator, Ann Jastrab, MFA, is also a fine art photographer, master darkroom printer, and teacher.

A photomontage tells a story by combining separate elements into a single composite image, creating a moment that never existed in reality, but one that suits the maker's artistic vision.

For this call for entries, we seek photomontage images of any subject. All capture and post processes are welcome.

ABOUT THE JUROR

Photographer Tom Chambers was raised in the Amish farm country of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He completed a B.F.A. in 1985 from The Ringling School of Art, Sarasota, Florida majoring in graphic design with an emphasis in photography. Since 1998, Tom has exhibited photomontage images from ten photographic series both nationally and internationally in twenty one solo exhibitions and over seventy group exhibitions.

Tom's photography is held in the collections throughout the world, and published in multiple publications and books. A retrospective book, Hearts and Bones, was released in the Fall of 2018, by Unicorn Publishing, London.

Amy Holmes George is a fine art photographer, teacher, and a past Executive Director of Texas Photographic Society (2013-2018). As a former tenured professor of photography and digital media at Stephen F. Austin State University, Amy has also held teaching appointments at Collin College, Baylor University and University of North Texas. Amy is a recent member of the National Board of Directors of the Society for Photographic Education (2013-2017) and a 2008 Fulbright grant recipient. She earned an MFA in photography from Clemson University and a BFA cum laude in photography and graphic design from Miami University.

Exhibited widely throughout the U.S. as well as in Italy, England, France and China, Amy''s work has been featured in over one hundred exhibitions and is housed in several permanent collections, including The Getty, The Kinsey Institute and the Fratelli Alinari Museum in Florence, Italy.

ABOUT THE JUROR

Ann M. Jastrab is the Executive Director at the Center for Photographic Art (CPA) in Carmel, California.  CPA strives to advance photography through education, exhibition and publication. These regional traditions-including mastery of craft, the concept of mentorship, and dedication to the photographic arts-evolved out of CPA''s predecessor, the renowned Friends of Photography established in 1967 by iconic artists Ansel Adams, Wynn Bullock and Cole Weston. While respecting these West Coast traditions, CPA is also at the vanguard of the future of photographic imagery. Before coming onboard at CPA, Ann was the gallery manager at Scott Nichols Gallery in San Francisco where she incorporated contemporary artists with the living legends photography.
Besides being a curator, Ann Jastrab, MFA, is also a fine art photographer, master darkroom printer, and teacher.

The quality of the light on a subject has a profound effect on the power of a photograph. Its color, direction, and diffusion often define the success or failure of an image. As filmmaker Aaron Rose put it, "In the right light, at the right time, everything is extraordinary".

For this exhibit, we're looking for images whose success depends on the? quality?of the light. Whether light or dark, bright or dull, natural or artificial, the subject of these images is the magic, the possibilities, and the nuances of the light itself. All capture and processing methods are welcome.

Wild or cultivated, plants of all kinds help define a landscape, give it a sense of place, delight the senses, and connect us to the natural world.
 
For Botanical, we're looking for images created in the landscape, studio, or garden that capture the spirit and character of plants, as well as our intimate connection to the plant world. All capture methods and processes are welcome.

ABOUT THE JUROR

"I create intimate portraits of place-the terrain, plants and indigenous elements that give a landscape character. I am drawn by a sense of mystery, quietude and emotional connection with place, and seek to reveal both the unexpected and overlooked in nature's details."

Lee Anne White is a fine art photographer whose work is rooted in the landscape. In addition to exhibiting and publishing her work, she teaches landscape, botanical and creativity workshops for Maine Media Workshops and Madeline Island School of the Arts, as well as on Amelia Island and in New Mexico. She has photographed and authored numerous books on landscape architecture and garden design, is the former editor-in-chief of Fine Gardening magazine, and has photographed feature stories for dozens of magazines including Garden Design, Better Homes and Gardens, Landscape Architecture and Sunset. Lee Anne earned a master's degree in creative studies at the State University of New York/Buffalo State and a bachelor's degree in journalism and commercial art at Brenau University.

A portal can be an architectural feature (gate, window, doorway, mirror, tunnel) that frames or isolates or adds dimension to an image. In a fictional sense, a portal can become a magical doorway through time and space. Alone or in combination, they hold unlimited creative possibilities for photographers.

For "Portals: Windows, Mirrors, and Doors",  we''re looking for images that use these devices in intriguing ways. All capture methods and processes are welcome.

She serves as faculty for both the BFA Photography and Video, and Masters in Digital Photography departments at the School of Visual Arts in New York.

Film critic Roger Ebert described the style: "Locations that reek of the night, of shadows, of alleys, of the back doors of fancy places, of apartment buildings with a high turnover rate, of taxi drivers and bartenders who have seen it all."

The film noir genre was extremely popular in the American films made in the 1950s. Among them were Double Indemnity, The Maltese Falcon, Key Largo and Out of the Past. All were known for contrasty lighting, unexpected camera angles, dark anti-heroes, high drama, and a lurking sense of danger.

For this exhibit we are looking for still images that capture the spirit of a noir film - color or black and white, and any kind of lighting that conveys that noir spirit. All capture and processing techniques are welcome.

We are very pleased that Amy Arbus will jury the exhibit. She will select approximately 40 images for exhibition in the Middlebury gallery, and 40 for our Online gallery. All selected images will be published in the exhibit catalog.

ABOUT THE JUROR

Amy Arbus has been creating photographic portraits since the 1980s. She has published five books, including The Inconvenience of Being Born, After Images, and The Fourth Wall. Her photographs have been featured in hundreds of periodicals, including French Vogue, GQ, The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, and Vanity Fair

Ms. Arbus has had 38 one-person exhibitions around the world, and is represented by The Schoolhouse Gallery in Provincetown, Massachusetts and Mitchell Giddings Fine Arts in Brattleboro, Vermont. Her photographs are in the collections of The Morgan Library, The Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The New York Public Library, and The National Theater in Norway.

As a native New Yorker, Amy is best known for her style feature, "On the Street," which appeared in The Village Voice from 1980-1990. Amy has taught The Narrative Portrait at the International Center of Photography, Anderson Ranch, Fine Arts Work Center, and NORD Photography in Norway.

PhotoPlace Gallery offers monthly, juried photographic exhibitions to photographers worldwide, each with a new topic and internationally recognized juror.

Juror selections are exhibited in either our physical gallery in Middlebury, Vermont or in our Online gallery on our website. All past exhibitions remain permanently posted on the website.

We encourage creative interpretation of our themes. Images do need to relate to the theme, but they need not be entirely literal.

Film critic Roger Ebert described the style: "Locations that reek of the night, of shadows, of alleys, of the back doors of fancy places, of apartment buildings with a high turnover rate, of taxi drivers and bartenders who have seen it all."

The film noir genre was extremely popular in the American films made in the 1950s. Among them were Double Indemnity, The Maltese Falcon, Key Largo and Out of the Past. All were known for contrasty lighting, unexpected camera angles, dark anti-heroes, high drama, and a lurking sense of danger.
