Rehearsing Reality: Optimizing Your Downtime

First, if you want to improve your programming skills, then get busy with programming. Don't bog yourself down creating a perfectly designed rig, developing a visualizer file, and drawing a cool set piece. Instead, utilize a tutorial file or shared files that already include the completed visualizer and plot data. This way, you can simply jump in and start programming. If you want to take on a bigger, full circle project, that is okay too. Start with a concept of a show and then draw your plots, visualizer files, patch and other essential items. Keep it real and assign yourself a budget. This way, you don't make that small club gig look like a rig from EDC with thousands of lights. Remember to take into account other staging items such as screens, speakers and audience members.

WWE's Thunderdome Design Gets an Audience of Virtual Fans

Working with WWE chairman Vince McMahon, Jason Robinson wrestled with the Covid-19 era mandate to "create an arena that looks full of people, but with no one in it." Robinson came up with a curved layer LED tile creating seven rows of "audience." They sought a higher resolution for the audience closer to the ring that proportionally decreased the further and higher up the seating layers away from the center of action. Famous Group was brought in after the design was complete to populate the virtual audience. Their software technology allows the WWE Universe to sign into the website and be virtually transported to the arena.

Programming Alongside Covid-19

I have been working on a lighting gig in the middle of a pandemic for two weeks. As the programmer, I had a lot riding on my shoulders. Neither the designer nor the associate designer were able to fly out of the U.K. or into the USA. But we were all able to embrace modern technology, and the way that we are conducting this show would have been impossible even a few years ago. We can create art without even being in the country. We can move mountains with mouse clicks. Rivers of streaming ones and zeros can portray meaningful information to individuals across the world. I can admit that these conditions are far from optimal - the pandemic has thrust all of us into the world of zoom calls, team meetings and Google Hangouts. But I don't have to let suboptimal conditions prevent me from collecting a paycheck.

Vickie Claiborne had already been organizing an attention-getting walk called WE WALK for Events and Entertainment in Las Vegas, when the #WeMakeEvents national committee member Andrew Gumper asked her to join the Vegas RedAlert team for the Sept. 1 awareness campaign. "We had access to just about any gear we wanted from almost every vendor in town," says Claiborne, who served as RedAlert regional director for Vegas. "Folks came forward with leads on everything from generators to boom lifts. Our network reached out to every corner of the city, and we had the support of the local IA 720 and the Musicians Union. Everyone from the 68,000 people in Las Vegas who have lost their livelihoods have volunteered time, equipment and money to support us." While most casinos on the Strip declined to participate, the downtown Plaza Hotel & Casino gave them the green light to go red, and Myron Martin, CEO/President of the Smith Center, approved the Truss Garden, with 68 pieces of truss each representing 1,000 out-of-work event professionals in Vegas. Martin also led the road case march, pushing Case #1.

In June, Top Rank Boxing returned to ESPN with live matches broadcast from the MGM Grand hotel in Las Vegas - without an audience. The biggest issue to overcome was safety for all and prevention of spreading the virus. NEW YORK - IATSE stagehand Peter Wright died Nov. 12 after falling from scaffolding while performing restoration work at Broadway's Winter Garden Theatre. Police reported that the accident took place around 8:45 a.m. while Wright was performing routine maintenance on the 109-year-old theater. Wright, a resident of Milford, CT, was 54.

LTP vs. HTP Data Priority when Merging Video and Lighting Data

Merging data from a piece of content to a DMX channel of a lighting fixture leads to the question of data priority - either LTP or HTP. LTP, or Latest Takes Precedence, is commonly used in tracking values between cues. It is not the best choice for merging two sets of data to a single DMX channel, however. Instead, HTP, or Highest Takes Precedence, is the priority method that makes better sense. And in fact, without HTP, merging doesn't work well at all. Why? Because using HTP, the DMX channel will only listen to the channel with the highest value. So the key to merging is using HTP.

To support the industry awareness campaign, #RedAlertRESTART, on Sept. 1, LD Matt Guminski coordinated efforts with New York regional director Kelly Easterling. In the crowded city skyline, the visual standouts included Empire State Building, Radio City Music Hall, Madison Square Garden, MetLife Stadium (NJ) and spires of the World Trade Center, among many others. But the activation of Times Square made a more compelling visual, in which 172 road cases from local companies manned by about 200 unemployed industry crew illustrated the shut down event industry. While the city couldn't provide a permit of assembly because of Covid-19 gathering restrictions, they did give permission to "freely protest," Guminski says. "We also got a Times Square billboard for 10 minutes to show a graphic image about RESTART." He adds, "In our industry, we are taught that if we are doing our job right, you don't see us. But it is time for us to come out of the shadows and be seen."

People of Color Can Support Any Genre of Music

One of the pet peeves voiced by David "5-1" Norman, tour manager and part of the core team behind Roadies of Color United (R.O.C.U.) and its first annual conference (see PLSN, March 2020, page 52), is the assumption shared by some, whether consciously or subconsciously, that a person's ethnic background should dictate what kind of music project they can support. "Our industry must break the stigma that people of color can only do R&B, rap and hip-hop tours," Norman notes. "Very early in our respective careers, we should make it a point to not get locked into that narrow focus. We should want to broaden our own personal horizons and learn and grow from the different genres of music and touring styles."

9/11 Tribute in Light Returns to NYC

As dark as 2020 has been for the lighting world, it could have been even darker. This was shaping up to be the first 9/11 memorial anniversary without New York City's iconic 9/11 Tribute in Light - the art installation of two light beams piercing the night sky representing the former Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Initially canceled because of the pandemic, an ensuing uproar across social media helped restore the project, with an assist from LD Cosmo Wilson, Michael Ahern Production Services (MAPS) and, as Wilson reports, "no shortage of volunteers - they had IATSE Local One guys, IBEW, security and EMTs to make sure we were all healthy." In the end, the temporary installation of 88 lighting fixtures at 7000 watts each, divided in two adjacent squares to create the two columns of light, lit up the sky once again from 9/11's ground zero. And there's now talk of making the temporary installation permanent, with lighting held in below-ground storage space, ready to be raised annually on Sept. 11.

We will use every trick in the book to make them appear better, bigger and more grandiose than they used to be. We will take them from the couch in their living room to Madison Square Garden in a matter of weeks. We can do that with lighting, sound, hair, makeup and costumes.
