We've all heard the mantra ‘New Year, new you', so why not put it into action in 2020 and start your masters degree this January.

- What are the benefits of starting your PG program in January?

- January start dates for postgraduate study are becoming more common. Starting at this time of year means that you will start your course at a different time to the majority of postgraduate students, and this has big advantages particularly when it comes to competition, for both funding (entry) and employment (exit). Here are five reasons why a January start could be for you.

1. More time to research your options
You will have a little bit more time and space to research your options and reenergise for the postgraduate challenge ahead! The transition from undergraduate to postgraduate study can be quite daunting. You might feel the need to recharge and take some extra time to consider your options. This can be particularly useful for those pursuing postgraduate research options, such as a PhD, where identifying and engaging a supervisor can be a time consuming process.

2. Money, money, money!
Delaying your postgraduate studies can allow you to put a funding strategy in place. You will have extra time to save, particularly if you can secure employment for the extra months. This can help with loan applications. In addition, scholarships and funding opportunities tend to be available for January starts and the competition may not be as fierce as it is in September.

3. New year, new you?
We tend to make resolutions about becoming "better versions of ourselves" in January. A postgraduate program requires a motivated student and what better time of year to start the journey towards a great qualification. Research indicates that those with postgraduate qualifications are more likely to earn higher salaries and progress more quickly to managerial positions.

4. Timing is everything: entry and exit competition
Traditionally, the majority of postgraduate programs start in September and graduates hit the job market 9-12 months later. By starting in January you will face less competition to gain a place on a program and you'll also graduate at a time where there is not a glut of graduates hitting the job market.

5. A bigger network
As a January starter, you will meet students who started in September and those joining in January. That gives you access to a much bigger social and professional network. The networks that you develop at postgraduate level are likely to be key throughout your career so the bigger the better.

Ray Lock is the Curriculum and Governance Manager at the University of Derby.

- How can you get help funding your PG program?

- There is a range of funding options available for postgraduate students. Course fees will vary depending on which course you are studying, whether you are a home, EU or international student and the mode of study – eg on campus or online. For example, online courses tend to be slightly cheaper because they use fewer facilities.

Postgraduate masters loans worth up to £10,906 are available as part of the Student Loans scheme for English residents under 60-years-old, and bursaries and studentships might also be available depending on circumstances and eligibility. In addition, UK applicants may be eligible for a Disabled Students' Allowance, special funding for social work or health care qualifications, funding for teaching qualifications, or funding via your employer. UK doctoral students can also take advantage of a doctoral loan up to £25,700. For this loan you have to meet certain eligibility criteria, which can be checked on the gov.uk website.

Overseas students are not eligible for student loans, however there is a range of scholarships and discounts. At a minimum, all international studentships at Derby may be eligible for a £2,000 discount on postgraduate taught course fees, which can be stacked with any other scholarships they may receive.

At Derby we also offer a special 25% alumni discount, which is available if you graduated in 2018/19 and enrol in 2019/20 or 2020/21. Otherwise, our normal alumni discount is 10%.

Terms and conditions apply to discounts and offers and loans are subject to inflationary increases.

- Why is the UK a great place to study your PG program?

- With its rich history, distinctive culture and reputation for providing world-class education, the UK is an ideal place to undertake postgraduate study for countless reasons. As an alumna of two Russell Group institutions, I have experienced first hand the incredible benefits of international study. I loved my time as a postgraduate student in the UK, and I think you will too. Here's why:

1. World-renowned universities

It's no secret that the UK is known for education – student perception surveys regularly rank the UK as one of, if not the top country for higher education worldwide. With 18 universities ranking in the World Top 100 and two ranked within the Top Five, the UK has earned its reputation of academic excellence and offers students nothing less than a world-class educational experience. 30% of UK university research is classified as ‘world-leading' and 46% as ‘internationally excellent' by the Research Excellence Framework (REF). Specialised degree programs, diversity of subject material, industry-relevant courses and outstanding research centres are just a few reasons to choose the UK for postgraduate study. In short, studying in the UK offers an educational experience like no other.

2. Affordability

While international student fees for UK universities may seem quite high at first glance, the price tag for a UK postgraduate degree might actually be about half that of your home country. The majority of postgraduate programs in the UK are only one year – half the time of an MA or MSc program in the US – so the yearly tuition rate you see is actually the total for the degree program, making it much more affordable than many other countries without sacrificing quality. In addition to this, many university cities in the UK, with the exception of some of the larger cities like London, have a fairly low cost of living, making them ideal for students on a budget.

3. Unique cultural experiences

The UK has a vast and fascinating history and a uniquely distinctive culture, both of which are at your fingertips as an international student. Having studied Medieval History at Durham University, I was in a particularly good position to experience this with the history I studied being literally outside my front door. The UK is a fairly small country, making it easy to travel and experience the history and culture of the UK in places like London, Stonehenge, Edinburgh, the Lake District, Bath and Windsor easily and inexpensively. Many universities in the UK are also located in or near vibrant centres of culture, offering experiences such as local festivals, art shows, theatre, and of course the ubiquitous British pubs – hubs of national culture.

4. Student support

UK institutions offer outstanding support to their international students. From dedicated international offices, to student ambassadors, to INTO programs and international student groups and societies across campuses, UK universities strive to create a supportive, growth-oriented environment for the thousands of international students they welcome each year. From visa support to career guidance and employability advice, UK universities have dedicated offices and staff to support international students every step of the way.

- What is the best way to choose your postgraduate university when you can''t visit the campus?

- Choosing where to study your postgraduate degree isn''t an easy decision and it''s currently been made even more difficult due to the Covid-19 pandemic, meaning you can''t visit university campuses for a traditional open event. The one positive is that whilst many of us are stuck to the confines of our home, you''ll probably have more time for online research into what postgraduate qualification you''d like to undertake and where.

There are plenty of ways to do your research and here are our top five tips for choosing your postgraduate university when you can''t get to an open day:

1. Be led by the course you want to study. If you know what course or subject area you want to study, you''re off to a great start. This will at least narrow down the number of universities that you can consider, as it''s unlikely that they will all offer your course. If you are undecided on your course, take a step back and consider what you want to get out of your postgraduate degree and what your main motivations are.

2. Arrange a chat with a lecturer - online or over the phone. Once you know what course you want to study, take the opportunity to talk to postgraduate lecturers or the course leader. Often this can be the most valuable way of finding the answers to all those questions you have (from modules covered to the type of assessment). It''s especially useful if you are looking to study a research degree, because you can find out what specialisms the university can offer.

3. Chat with a current postgraduate student - find out what life is like. Don''t just rely on course descriptors, marketing materials and rankings information, you can find out what it''s really like to study at a particular university by having a chat with a current postgraduate student. In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, many universities are running 'live chat'' events where you can talk online to current students or members of staff.

4. Take a virtual tour of the campus. You may not be able to visit the campus in person, but there are some fantastic virtual tours of university campuses online. These can give you a real insight into the look of the campus, including accommodation, plus specialist areas that are most relevant to your course.

5. Check out a university''s social media channels. This is a great way to get a feel for what it''s like to be on campus, get an idea of what that institution stands for, their expertise and how you will be supported.

The University of Gloucestershire offers ''Meet The Lecturer'' sessions, where you can have an informal chat with academic experts via video call or telephone. We''ll also be running a Virtual Postgraduate Open Event on Tuesday 9th June, from 1-3pm BST.

Angela Lawrence is the Associate Dean at Staffordshire Business School.

- What are the benefits of studying a business-related masters program?

- A business-related masters program is intended to develop a student''s thinking, skills and professionalism to an advanced and specialist level. Bachelor business degrees focus on giving students a broad range of knowledge around business operations, so that they understand the interactions between finance and marketing, operations and HR, and the important leadership and management skills required of a manager within a business environment. To support a more in-depth understanding of the complexities of the modern business environment, masters-level business degrees help students to develop strategic thinking skills that will drive a business forward in tune with fast emerging trends.

So, for me, postgraduate business study is about three things

1. Developing strategic leadership skills by learning how to bring together all elements of business performance, to drive an organisation forward to achieve positive outcomes. A good postgraduate business degree should challenge a student''s thinking and push them out of their comfort zone. It should demand research-based decision-making and equip them with the skills and confidence to drive those decisions through an organisation, harnessing the support of the management team along the way.

2. Gaining transferable skills at a high level. Postgraduate business programs teach transferrable skills that are relevant for senior management positions whatever the industry sector. So, whilst there are a variety of masters-level subject-related degrees available, these could actually restrict employment outcomes to specific subject sectors. Studying for an MBA or similar postgraduate business qualification gives a graduate access to a multitude of senior positions that require a strategic thinker who can demonstrate a sound understanding of business environments. This experience is usually gained via project work that is built into the award program. Project modules provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate the full suite of management and leadership competencies that are derived from the program of study.

3. Proving yourself. Studying for a business-related masters program says something about an individual to me. It tells me that they have stamina and resilience in the business world, that they understand how to handle complex business challenges, that they have the confidence to make decisions that could change the direction of a business and that they are not afraid of that change. It tells me that they are a consummate professional and that they recognise the importance of evidence-based decision-making and the requirement to have their finger on the pulse of emerging business opportunities, which can only happen if an enquiring, inquisitive and entrepreneurial mindset is fostered.

In a post-Brexit business environment, more than ever before, businesses will need leaders who possess these attributes in order to survive and thrive.
