Do you have questions for a scientist about COVID? These past few months, we have discovered a lot about COVID and infectious diseases, and we continue to learn with each passing week. We are thrilled to have a conversation with Taylor Wilkerson, DVM MPH about all things COVID and pandemic. Voting Day

Tuesday, November 3

We have a little over a week to Election Day. Make sure you have the information you need: and have a plan:

-Every seat matters. If you care about any issue under the umbrella of social justice, who you choose from your most local leaders to the next president matters.

-You can still help with phone banking and texting. If you are already doing it, THANK YOU! If you need a place to get started: voterempowerment.org is supporting multiple grassroots efforts.

- Make sure you encourage your friends and family vote.

- If you have already cast your ballot, thank you.

Wherever you are on election day, put on your Pussyhat. Take a pic, and share using #pussyhat. By just wearing a pussyhat, you will be reminding people that women's rights are human rights and encouraging people to consider gender equality as they cast their votes.

Like past weeks, we will be both congregating as a whole and breaking into smaller groups to have the opportunity to meet and connect with others.

The Senate majority is hinging on two Senate runoff races in Georgia. What can and cannot happen at the national level is at stake. Want to help?

• Make sure you are registered and ready to send letters to voters with Vote Forward.
• Support organizations that have already been instrumental in registering historically disenfranchised Georgia voters like The New Georgia Project (the 501c3 associated with Fair Fight) and Black Voters Matter.
• If you are in Georgia, make sure you are registered to vote (deadline is Dec. 7).

This winter holiday season, I thank each of you for helping to save our democracy and to make our country better for everyone. Tomorrow is Giving Tuesday. Please consider giving to a cause you support. If Pussyhat is one of your chosen non-profits, an extra thank you!

Pussyhat Virtual Get Out the Vote Knit Along

Last Tuesday's Knit-Along was great and I am so thankful to everyone who participated.

Our next one is Tuesday, October 13, 4pm PDT/7pm EDT.

Everyone is welcome (the crafty, craft-curious and craft averse). Like last week, we will be both congregating as a large group and breaking into smaller groups to have the opportunity to meet and connect with others. We will be talking about Pussyhat, getting out the vote, and more.

A big takeaway for me is that no one person knows everything, but together we know a lot. This Tuesday we welcome Dave Chandrasekaran, cofounder of the Voter Empowerment Project to our gathering to talk about how we can all use our skills to help democracy. (Last week we had the organizers from #warmtheline - see below for more.)

If you are already working to get out the vote, thank you! If you are looking for ways to get involved, here are two:

Are you ready to phonebank and want to support grassroots organizations in swing states? Do you speak a second language?
Voter Empowerment Project is a great place to start. VEP supports small, highly-effective community-based nonprofits focused on voter empowerment among people of color, youth, and other historically disenfranchised communities. VEP works to expand the capacity of these organizations to increase voter turnout through voter registration, education, mobilization, protection, and more. We will have a representative at Tuesday's knit along from VEP answering questions.

Do you like to write? Have a printer?
Vote Forward! We have teamed up with Vote Forward to help send out 15 million letters to voters in swing states. The writing is easy- share a sentence or two about why voting is important to you.

Are you ready to march?

On October 17, across the country, women's rights supporters are gathering in person (at a safe distance) and virtually to stand up for women's rights and to honor the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Check out womensmarch.com for details.

Pussyhat and Voting!

Whether you are voting by mail, early voting, or voting in person on November 3, consider donning a pussyhat as part of your voting plan. Put on your pussyhat and snap a pic and post with #pussyhat to remind others to vote, too. Another opportunity to gift a pussyhat is through the #warmtheline effort, a project to send warm items to people waiting in long voting lines. If your contribution doesn't make it to the line, organizers have back up plans to make sure they go to people in need.

Dear Pussyhat Community,

TL/DR: come knit and strategize

"Real change, enduring change, happens one step at a time." - Ruth Bader Ginsburg

To me, Pussyhat has always been more than a single hat. It is a way to connect, support, and lift up one another. It is a way to recognize the power each of us has to make change, and how we become more powerful when we do it together.

We are reeling from multiple tragedies. We are isolated and angry.

At the beginning of the pandemic I started Masks for Humanity with weekly stitch-ins, as well as virtual knit nights for Welcome Blanket. I felt connected and got to meet people all around the country. I had to take an unexpected break due to my own health issues, and I have missed our community while being away from it.

This article by Tara Haelle, "Your Surge Capacity is Depleted, it's why you feel awful", has helped me make sense of where I am right now with everything- and perhaps where many of us are now. In it, Ann Masten, PhD shares: "Helping others is one of those win-win strategies of taking action because we're all feeling a sense of helplessness and loss of control about what's going on with this pandemic, but when you take action with other people, you can control what you're doing." Being a part of this community and getting out the vote are the ways I want to take action.

Come join me. Let's come together to support and strategize between now and November 3. We deserve leaders who will treat us with dignity. We all need to fight for democracy.

FIRST MEETING: TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 29 4PM PDT / 7PM EDT

Make a Pussyhat, work on something else, or just come as you are. Everyone is welcome. We will introduce ourselves and talk craft and GOTV strategy. After the first knit-along, we'll take what we learned and apply it to a weekly Tuesday knit-along.

424,000 masks requested!

Each one of these masks is an opportunity to help another person.

Masks for Humanity is the hub for people who need cloth masks and people who can make cloth masks.

We take requests from organizations that include essential workers and vulnerable populations. If you are inspired to take action because of a group impacted by COVID-19, chances are we already have an organization on our list that serves that group.

Want to support domestic violence survivors?
Merryman House Domestic Crisis Center in Paducah, Kentucky, is a domestic violence shelter. They need 300 cloth masks in both child and adult sizes. ?

Want to support the homeless?
Homeless in Community in Cedar Rapids, Iowa is asking for 100 cloth masks.

Want to support new refugee neighbors?
Miry's List in Los Angeles, CA, needs 1000 masks for recently resettled refugees. (They are also one of our partners for Welcome Blanket!)

Do you see grocery store workers and want to thank them?
Kroger's in Indianapolis, Indiana, is asking for 1000 masks. What could be better than a "thank you"? How about a "thank you" and a mask!

Do you care about kids getting school lunches while they aren't in school?
Faculty/staff passing out breakfast and lunch to students in Corpus Christi, Texas, are asking for 500 cloth masks.

Want to show health care heroes in Puerto Rico some care?
Corporaci?n de Salud Asegurada por nuestra Organizaci?n Solidaria, Inc. in Caguas, Puerto Rico, is asking for 5000 masks. (They also need isolation gowns, so if you'd rather make those, here is the pattern.)

Want to help keep someone's grandmother safe?
Community Saves Lives in Washington, DC is a senior care facility asking for 100 masks.

Want to help the Navajo Nation (one of many groups disproportionately impacted by COVID-19)?Navajo Nation Health Command Operations Center Field Workers in Windowrock, AZ is asking for 1000 cloth masks.

The pandemic has impacted all of us, and some so much more than others. If you are in a position to help get people covered, you have the opportunity to help someone physically stay safe.

And, as an extra help, please LOG your masks so we can have a better sense of how many are still needed at each location.

ASK A SCIENTIST SERIES

Do you have questions about COVID-19, states opening up, face mask usage? Do you want your information to be current and from a scientist? Join us for "Ask a Scientist." This Thursday at 4pm PDT/ 7pm EDT, we are thrilled to welcome Nina Hasen, PhD. Here's the sign-up info.

WEEKLY SEW-A-THON

Every Friday at 12 pm PDT/ 3pm EDT we host a sew-a-thon. This Friday is Juneteenth. Many of us will be honoring the day out on the streets. If you are honoring the day by making masks, our sew-a-thon is a way to meet up with others working on social justice issues through craft. All are welcome (no need to be sewing).

CURRENT NEED: 336,000 masks still requested.

We know that masks help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

We know that some states are now having COVID-19 surges.

While some of us are already covered, many people still do not have the cloth face masks they need. We are still experiencing a medical PPE crisis. The situation is not ok...and we can help.

Below are some of our organizations of essential workers and organizations serving vulnerable populations in areas that have recorded their highest-ever seven-day average of new cases since the pandemic began (as of June 14). They need cloth masks:

Puerto Rico: Corporaci?n de Salud Asegurada por nuestra Organizaci?n Solidaria, Inc. in Caguas, PR needs 5000 cloth face masks.

Arizona: Tuba City Regional Health Care serves the Navajo nation in Tuba, AZ and needs 1675 cloth face masks.

California: South Central Family Health Center serves a predominantly black community in Los Angeles, CA and needs 9200 cloth face masks.

Florida: Weave Tales is an organization that serves refugees in Jacksonville, FL and needs 900 cloth face masks.

Kentucky: Burton Mortuary Services in Earlington, Kentucky needs 300 cloth face masks.

New Mexico: Palmilla Senior Living in Albuquerque, NM need 75 cloth face masks.

North Carolina: Whispering Pines Nursing Home & Rehab in Fayettesville, NC is a senior care facility and needs 100 cloth face masks.

Mississippi: Family Health Center in Laurel, MS needs 1000 cloth face masks.

Oregon: The Cascade AIDS Project in Portland, OR needs 100 cloth face masks. They serve HIV-positive people who are houseless or housing insecure.

South Carolina: Shriner's Hospital for Children in Greenville, SC needs 500 child-sized cloth face masks.

Tennessee: The Children's Clinic P.A. in Jackson, TN needs 100 cloth face masks.

Texas: Chambers County Public Hospital District #1 in Anuhuac, TX needs 200 cloth face masks.

Thank you for the work you are doing to help keep people healthy and safe. If you are bringing extra masks with you to help protesters, thank you.

Information about COVID-19 is developing quickly and it can be difficult to tell what is fact, ?educated guess, rumor, or just plain false. How do we apply what we know through science to how we are living our lives?

When: Thursday, May 21, 4pm PDT/ 7pm EDT

Who: Dr. William Pewen. We are thrilled to be talking with clinical and infectious disease scientist William Pewen, PhD MPH. His publications include studies of vaccine and drug treatment as well as pandemic response, and include contributions to Science, the New York Times, Health Affairs and The Atlantic.

How/Where: Here is the link to join the conversation on Zoom. For security reasons, you will need a free zoom account associated with the email you use to sign up. We will have a zoom bouncer in case of any shenanigans. We will be looking through questions you bring to the chat and asking Dr. Pewen.

She is the creator of One Health Lessons and has designed curriculum about COVID-19 for students of all ages. ?

Weekly Sew-a-thon:

Every Friday at 12 PDT / 3 EDT, makers get together to talk masks and more. If you want to connect with other makers, this is a great opportunity to stop in, listen and share. It''s relaxed, informal, and one of my favorite parts of the week. Here's the link to register. All are welcome.

Mask Count:

We currently have 340,000 cloth masks requested! We have had requests come in from across the country, from rural and urban areas, and from organizations that serve groups disproportionally impacted by COVID-19. If there is a group you are specifically concerned about, chances are, we have an organization on our list that serves them.
