This is especially significant since English is not the primary language spoken by a large segment of the population we serve. Giving a new book during well-child visits and talking to parents about the importance of reading aloud is an important resource for our health center."

More Evidence that Reach Out and Read Works

Research plays an important role in our model, ensuring that our programs remain relevant, are based in the latest scientific understanding of child development, and deliver the maximum impact for those we serve. Recently there have been several exciting publications that focus on Reach Out and Read.

• A recent study shows strong evidence that effective book giveaway programs require a 2-generational approach -- a key element of the Reach Out and Read model -- that both supports the parent's skills and provides the book for the child. 
• A celebration of Reach Out and Read from our co-founders, Dr. Zuckerman and Dr. Needlman, corrects misconceptions of Reach Out and Read as merely a book giveaway program by highlighting the science of child development in the practice of literacy promotion.
• A collaborative study between the Academic Pediatric Association's Continuity Research Network and Reach Out and Read, establishing the first national survey to describe literacy promotion training and behavior.

Children's books have the power to promote not just literacy and language but also socio-emotional skills and positive identity development. In addition to providing  guidance for parents on the benefits of reading aloud, providing families with diverse and culturally responsive books demonstrates that children of all backgrounds are valued members of our society.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) policy statement on racism affirms that "pediatricians are uniquely positioned to both prevent and mitigate the consequences of racism as a key and trusted source of support for pediatric patients and their families." Pediatricians are in a position to both abate the damage of racism and plant the seeds of humanism within every young patient, regardless of race. All of this can start with the right book.

When we reflect on our childhood, many of us have fond memories of snuggling up with a loved one and enjoying a favorite story together. But even more than the story, it's the feeling of love that stands out in our memories. At Reach Out and Read, our goal is to encourage this sharing of books and love with families, so every child is read to every day, in the arms of someone who loves them.
