Reach Out and Read Celebrates 30 Years

Reach Out and Read celebrated its 30th Anniversary with our Next Chapter Forum and National Leadership Conference at the historic Boston Public Library from November 6-8, 2019.  This important milestone gave us an opportunity to step back, celebrate the progress over the last three decades, and take an important look into the future of our work serving millions of children and families across the United States.  As Reach Out and Read embarks on its next 30 years, the organization envisions a world where every child is read to every day, cuddled on the lap of someone who loves them.

The three-day event started with the Next Chapter Forum, an opportunity to bring together leaders in early childhood development for a rich conversation about maximizing the potential of pediatric primary care to promote the positive language-rich parent-child interactions that are critical for a strong foundation during a child’s early years of life. The Leadership Conference followed with our organization’s affiliate network leaders from around the country participating in lively discussions around best practices in promoting the benefits of reading aloud through pediatric primary care.

We are grateful to our partners, medical leadership and affiliates around the country for joining us in the city where it all began. Stay tuned for exciting updates for the Next Chapter and beyond.

Can Reading Improve Health Outcomes?
While visiting Boston for Reach Out and Read's 30th Anniversary, Co-Founder, Dr. Robert Needlman was interviewed by Boston 25 News about Reach Out and Read's origins. Dr. Needlman described Reach Out and Read's mission, as "What [Reach Out and Read is] doing is we are supporting that incredible energy that parents bring to needing to nurture their kids." Dr. Needlman noted that much has been achieved, but there is still a lot of work to be done to support children and families.  Please click here to watch the rest of the interview.
Screen Time for Children - What is the Right Amount?
In a recent article in the New York Times, Dr. Perri Klass, Reach Out and Read's National Medical Director, shares research from Dr. John Hutton, a pediatrician, and researcher at Cincinnati Children's Hospital about the impact of screen time on young children's brains.

The study concludes that screens should not be seen as poisonous, rather parents should realize that it is their own interactions with their child that make the difference.  Dr. Klass writes, "If screens are taking the place of interacting with caregivers or talking or playing, children may not be getting the full benefit of the astonishing neural plasticity and potential of those early years....In the early years, you are so important, and good parenting involves being there, interacting, talking, playing, singing, asking and answering questions, and of course, reading."  To read more click here.
