Happy 10^th Anniversary to RC

This month marks a special milestone anniversary for Rescue Chocolate which was founded in January 2010!

Over the past decade we have partnered with at least 700 animal rescue groups to raise money for their lifesaving work. A partially complete list can be found here: https://www.rescuechocolate.com/pages/who-we-help

One teeny spotlight on just one of the groups: Little Bear Sanctuary. Despite the name, there are no bears in sight. Instead this great group, based in Florida, rescues farm animals such as pigs and cows. It was recently verified as a member in good standing of the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries. The volunteers who run the place are committed to a vegan lifestyle and to never placing their animals in cages or pens. Read on� https://littlebearsanctuary.org/.

Our support of our rescue partners has taken many forms. Sometimes we donate gift certificates for use in their fundraising raffles or silent auctions. Sometimes we provide our chocolate at below-wholesale rates, and allow them to re-sell at the regular retail rate and pocket the difference. Sometimes we send over an end-of-the-month donation, based on purchases by their members and supporters. And sometimes we donate products or dollars outright.

PERFECT VISION IN 2020

Our 2020 beneficiary, Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue, has a perfect model for rescuing animals from high-kill shelters. Since its founding in March 2011, the group has saved more than 2500 dogs from shelters in the rural South. Here are the steps they take:

Spay/neuter, vaccinate, test for heartworm, provide flea and heartworm preventative, and de-worm at private vets local to the shelter where the dogs come from.

Treat illnesses such as heartworm, parvo and distemper, and provide for necessary surgeries.

Have the dogs stay in local fosters or boarding for at least two weeks or until they are healthy enough to travel.

Ride north with professional rescue transporters who make sure the ride is as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

Upon arrival, send the dogs into foster homes where they can get training and experience living in a home environment.

Find the right dog-human match with a thorough vetting process that includes three personal references, a vet reference, and a home visit.

Covid-19 Update

Thanks to wonderful customers like you, Rescue Chocolate is weathering the storm. Our wholesale business has fallen off a little bit because storefronts are closed. But our online sales are strong. We have very good supplies of all of our flavors, as our co-packer in New Jersey is still running at full capacity. That facility, by the way, consistently receives "A" ratings for superior health and sanitary practices.

A special shout-out to the U.S. Postal Service carriers serving our neighborhood in East Flatbush (Brooklyn) for picking up our bundles everyday with a strong arm and a ready smile.

We have always thought of Rescue Chocolate bars as lifesavers. And these days, we are also reminded of a whole different species of lifesavers: the brave men and women patrolling empty streets to keep life orderly, the elected officials demonstrating far-sighted leadership, the journalists keeping us informed, and the medical workers in the deepest trenches. Trillions of thank-yous!

For the foreseeable future, we will continue packing our nuggets of goodness into boxes and sending them off to you and your loved ones, hoping that they brighten your day.

Of course we love the pics of empty animal shelters due to the need for companions during the coronavirus. But we can't celebrate fully yet. As this article explains, there are plenty of animals remaining in shelters and a "steady stream of strays coming in." We are pleased to announce that Rescue Chocolate is now made with the fair-trade and organic Republica Del Cacao couverture, produced by Valrhona Chocolates. That French company recently became part of our B Corp family, and their US office is in one of our favorite Brooklyn neighborhoods: DUMBO! Here's a handy little glossary for the foregoing:

Couverture = a very high-quality chocolate that contains a higher percentage of cocoa butter (32-39%) than baking chocolate

B Corp = a certification awarded to for-profit companies whose mission includes giving back to our communities and our planet

Now More Than Ever!

Our innocent furry friends still need our attention. The dogs and cats in municipal shelters are still looking for forever homes. Check with your local facilities to note changed or reduced hours of operation. Most are still open for fosters, adoptions, and emergency surrenders. Some are welcoming very small groups (2-4 people) to come in by appointment to help socialize the animals, which can be a great activity for teens out of school!

And here's some spectacularly good news, which we all need like oxygen right now: Our favorite line: "Forget toilet paper, milk and hand sanitizer. There's now a rush to stock up on real necessities, such as cats and dogs. And rabbits and fish, and even a couple of chickens."

As if planning a wedding, bar mitzvah, or other major celebration wasn't stressful enough, you now have life-and-death decisions to make. Pets in Your Pocket

One of our more unique beneficiary partners is called the Minnesota Pocket Pet Rescue. The Twin Cities-based group is all about saving the smaller critters that are often overlooked by the rescue community: rabbits, degus, rats, sugar gliders, hamsters, gerbils, ferrets, mice, hedgehogs, chinchillas, and guinea pigs. Not always as trusting of humans as dogs and cats, these little guys sometimes need patient training so that they can overcome their fears. Thank you for tackling that, Minnesotans!

Let there be Love in 2021

We''re happy to announce that our 2021 beneficiary will be One Love Dog Rescue. The 100% volunteer- and foster-based group is dedicated to the rescue, healing and re-homing of abused, unwanted, and abandoned dogs, primarily on Long Island, NY. Since inception in 2017, they have adopted out over 1,000 dogs to families there.

And take a look at these 6 puppies, all from the same litter and all of whom recently recovered from parvo. One Love has taken on the challenge of paying for those medical bills. We''re honored to lend our support!
