3 helpful tips for getting used to CPAP

Adjusting to CPAP therapy each night is different for everyone. While many new CPAP users adapt quickly to wearing their mask each night, for others, it can take time to get comfortable.

Here are three easy ways to help you get adjusted:

Introduce your mask in stages

If putting your mask on right before bed is making it difficult to fall asleep, try wearing it while watching TV or doing things around the house. The more you get used to the mask on your face, the easier it will be to wear while sleeping.

Make adjustments for the right fit

You may need to make small adjustments to your mask each night to get the right fit. If your mask falls off or slips out of place, try tightening it. If you wake up with red marks on your face, try loosening it. And when you first put your mask on, do it while lying down and with the machine on, to help get the right fit and seal.

Stay with it

Being consistent will help you establish a routine and get acclimated to therapy more smoothly. Try using it every night, even if it's a little uncomfortable at first. Practice makes perfect and the more you wear it, the easier it'll become.

Using your CPAP machine every night can be challenging at first. But if you're still having trouble adjusting after a few weeks, don't get discouraged. Some people take longer to adjust to therapy than others. The good news is there are some simple things you can try to help you feel more comfortable.
