FTO Doubles Work Volume, Crushes Previous Stats
Based on the previous year''s metrics, Fair Trade Outsourcing agents working for ProctorU were able to live proctor more than 50,000 exams, on average, even reaching as high as 72,000 during peak season. In June 2020, FTO beat its own stats and doubled its productivity. Agents have live proctored and reviewed nearly 120,000 exams in a month.

Mike Dershowitz, CEO and founder of Fair Trade Outsourcing, credits the company''s innovative development of a new labor market throughout the early days of the pandemic. The stringent quarantine rules forced many businesses to shut down. In response, FTO has shifted to a work-from-home arrangement that has a turn on/turn off feature -- a key factor in turning its outsourcing model into a highly flexible labor management system. FTO and its clients can scale up or down as the need arises without causing disruptions, such as work stoppages or delays because of retraining and ramp-up hiring.

FTO Garners High eNPS Score Among Employees
Fair Trade Outsourcing recently surveyed its employees and asked them to rate their level of satisfaction on different aspects of operations. As of June 2020, FTO has garnered a highly encouraging Employee net Promoter Score (eNPS) of 57% from its workforce in Iloilo City. These are the employees who rated the company''s overall operational performance a score of 9 or greater. It''s important to note that eNPS remains at a positive score over time, if we looked at the respondents'' length of stay with the company, but it is also important to note that the number generally decreases as the employee remains longer in the company. This behavior will be considered in the conduct of FGDs and in the upcoming Culture Warrior Training.

J-PAL Partners with FTO in Research Study
J-PAL North America, based at MIT, has chosen Fair Trade Outsourcing as its subject for its newest research into businesses making an impact on the lives of their employees. To give you an idea on the kind of research that J-PAL and its affiliates have explored, here are three brief summaries of some relevant papers:
In China, researchers evaluated the effects of allowing call center employees to work from home four days a week. Nine months later, they found that performance of home workers improved by 13 percent, and workers also reported higher work satisfaction and had more positive attitudes. Firm productivity also increased by 20 to 30 percent as a result and the reduction in office space saved the firm approximately USD$2,000 a year per employee.
In Ethiopia, job applicants who received an industrial job offer worked more and steadier hours, but exposure increased health problems and most quit within months. When barriers to self-employment were reduced, applicants preferred self-employment. Five years later, there were no longer any effects in earnings, employment and health.
In India, where an annual minimum wage hike turned out much lower than expected, workers in garment-making firms were invited to take part in a survey asking for feedback on job conditions, supervisor performance, as well as overall job satisfaction. Results found that among workers who were disappointed by the wage hike, enabling ''voice'' reduced the probability of quitting by 20 percent a few months later. Researchers concluded that providing opportunities for employees to communicate their grievances had important implications for worker behavior.

FTO Impact Survey and Budget Tool Launched in Davao and Bacolod Sites
Quarterly, we conduct an Impact Survey and we encourage all employees to participate. The data will be used to shape our impact programs and company policies. It will also be included in our Impact Report which is published every three months. The survey respondents used to be limited to our Iloilo City facility. Now that our Bacolod and Davao sites are up and running, FTO recently launched our Impact Survey and the Budget Tool company-wide.
Instead of simply profiling each agent''s financial capacity, the scope of the Budget Tool now includes income from other members of the household and their respective expenditures. Thus, the financial profile of respondents now cover both personal and household economic behavior.

FTO Launches Company-wide Culture Warrior Training
Fair Trade Outsourcing has proven time and again that creating an innovative and safe work environment through a humanist-oriented approach to managing people produces superior results for our clients. Now, that we have new facilities operating in two major cities in the Philippines, we''re introducing a new company-wide training program. It''s time that we implement a multi-site Learning and Development model for building a cohesive company culture. The program, aptly named "Culture Warrior Training," heavily leans on the Agent Bill of Rights, which is one of the driving forces in FTO''s outperforming business model.
NOTE: Enrollment into this Learning and Development program is voluntary. Employees who signed up for this 9-day program will be attending the sessions outside of their work hours. |

HUMANS OF FAIR TRADE OUTSOURCING

Meet Bam-Bam and Her Journey to Earning 4x Her Household Income in 5 Years
Before she joined Fair Trade Outsourcing, she worked as an agent of a non-voice account at a different BPO company. She was later cross-trained to do outgoing calls for a doctor''s clinic to confirm appointments. However, there were no increases in her salary. She knew she was underpaid and her salary wasn''t enough to sustain the needs of a single mom with two kids. Because she wasn’t stable financially, she had to look for another job.
She found out about FTO from a friend, and she immediately applied for a CSR job. Aside from the fact that they offered a better salary, the job was with a new account, so she was sure there would be bigger opportunities for her in the future.
The company saw how hard she worked and her potential for training people. And so, she was promoted as a product trainer in the account she’s currently part of. Though she didn’t have that much experience in training, she knew that she already had the knowledge and experience to share with new agents and that she would be able to make a difference for them.
Working at FTO made her more confident in dealing with people. She became more responsible for the tasks given to her. In addition, she improved her soft skills, and she learned how to deal with cultural diversity.
The work environment is great, and everyone is treated like family. Everyone is approachable and always willing to help her grow, even before she became a trainer. Even today, now that she is already one of the managers, she still experience the same warmth and willingness to help others from her superiors. Because of this, she was motivated not just to move forward but also to inspire others and help them grow with her.
Before she was promoted from team leader to manager, her goal was to keep the work environment for her team as free from stress as possible. Moreover, she wanted everyone to grow by determining their opportunities and identifying their strengths.
She''s one of the voices of the employees. Even before, she always believed that employees must go first. She believes that "Clients may not come first all the time. Employees will have to come first. If you take care of your employees, they will take care of the clients."
Her employment at FTO helps her cope with her children''s everyday expenses. She can now sustain their daily needs and she no longer have to borrow money from a relative.
Throughout her employment with FTO, whenever her children were hospitalized, the company never failed to offer support by assisting her with hospital bills. She''s very happy that she can enroll her dependents for health insurance. It''s a huge help and she’s now worry-free whenever her children get sick.
"Everything that I have now is not because I''m lucky, but because I''m in the right company."
The company''s mission is to make sure the employees progress economically. The company offers zero-interest loans on a small business or motorcycle purchase to eligible employees. Luckily, she''s one of those employees who availed of the business loan and she started a computer shop. According to her, everything she has now is not because she''s lucky, but because she''s in the right company.
