Dear Noah,

For many, Thanksgiving is a day for connection with family and friends, a time to say thanks for the good in our lives. And yet, for Native peoples, it's often seen as a day of mourning. Can we celebrate a day of gratitude for what is good, while also holding the pain of American history?

I started to search for rituals that hold these disparate elements, but didn't find many (if you know of any, please send them my way!). So, like many Ritualwell contributors, I created one myself: "This Land Belongs to No One: Thanksgiving Prayer Honoring our Ancestors and Native Peoples� Land." It includes a free downloadable, printable PDF.

This prayer takes its inspiration from the verse in Psalm 24, �The earth is God�s.� We begin by acknowledging that this land belongs to no one. We then honor the ancestral Native peoples who cared for this land, followed by our own immigrant ancestors who endured hardship to come here. We then thank those cooked our meal, and those who planted and harvested the food we eat. Finally, we state our commitment to sustaining the land for future generations.

Dear Noah,

Tonight begins the holiday of Hanukkah. After we lit the first candle (in Israel, so it already happened!), sang songs and ate latkes, I noticed my two young children suddenly gazing at the candles. They were paying attention to the intricacies of the light, noting the wick and the different dimensions of the flame. It was a beautiful reminder of the talmudic notion that the Hanukkah candles are meant to be enjoyed in and of themselves, not for a utilitarian purpose, but simply as they are. It was a reminder to pause and just be in the presence of the light.

I invite you to take a moment as you light the candles each night to reflect on the flames, the colors, the warmth, and all the associations you have with light. Take that moment to savor the gift of light, and reflect on the many ways that light dispels darkness in your own life and in the world.

Dear Noah,

One of the most powerful dimensions of Judaism is its ability to hold all the complexity of life, from joy to sorrow. It''s fitting that Purim is connected to Yom Kippur (which is known as yom k''Purim--a day like Purim). Purim is a holiday of joy and celebration, but also of opposites, of turning things upside down. Yom Kippur is somber and reflective, reminding us of life''s transience. Tradition teaches us that joy and sorrow are intertwined, and we must hold space for both.

So as I navigate stressful current events, I have been particularly grateful that Purim is around the corner. Here''s a day where it''s a mitzvah to have a good time. We need this moment of relief now more than ever.

I''m also grateful for the work shared below: a response to the tragic natural disaster in Nashville, a blessing for washing hands during these scary times, and a visionary poem on the dark side of Purim.

Dear Noah,

I apologize for the last-minute notice about this wonderful event, and I hope you will be able to join. Happening today at 11:00am ET (6:00pm Israel time) on Zoom: Holocaust Memorial Day Inspired by Etty Hillesum is an alternative Yom HaShoah event hosted by peace activists Emma Sham-ba Ayalon (Israeli) and Dina Awaad (Palestinian), the amazing women behind the Etty Hillesum Cards, featuring quotes by Etty Hillesum in English, Hebrew and Arabic (you may pre-order the cards, which will be back in stock soon in the Ritualwell store!).

Since I discovered the writings of Etty Hillesum, I''ve become a self-described (and unabashed!) "evangelist" for her work. She wrote her diaries and letters between 1941-1943, before she perished in Auschwitz at the age of 29. Her writing is a profound testament to the power of the human spirit to face the darkness of difficult times with light, love and resilience.

I was recently interviewed for the Talking in Shul podcast about my newfound obsession with the writings of Etty Hillesum, which inspired me to design "Creating Resilience: Writing and Spiritual Practice Inspired by Etty Hillesum." I hope you''ll join me for this special series of gatherings. We''ll dive deep into Hillesum''s writings and into our own souls to find strength through creative expression.

The writings of Etty Hillesum are a treasure trove of the human spirit; she wrote her diaries and letters from 1941 to 1943, before her life was tragically cut short in Auschwitz. Her writings reveal an astonishing spiritual resilience and a deep and universal love for humanity and for God, even during the darkest times. In this series of online gatherings we will read and discuss Hillesum's writings as a springboard for creating our own writing and spiritual practices.

Lag B''Omer marks the end of semi-mourning, a Sephardi tradition during the time of Omer in which thousands of Rabbi Akiva''s students died from a great plague. At this time of turmoil and grief--whether from our new reality of daily life, becoming ill or caring for the sick, or the anxiety of entering a future of unknowns--take this moment to write poetry that honors that loss. Using inspiration from the poem "Meditations at Lagunitas" by Robert Haas, we will also write toward the mysterious mix of loss and joy, and how loss makes us keenly aware of our current blessings.

Dear Noah,

We are proud to share a new prayer titled "Kaddish for Black Lives," written by the Jewish Multiracial Network. While we wish that such a prayer were not necessary, we affirm with its writers that Black lives are sacred, and we will continue to pray and take action for justice and healing.

There is so much to mourn, yet we must create space for hope that will sustain our work toward change. Tomorrow is Juneteenth, the anniversary of the day that slaves were freed in Texas on June 19, 1865. This anniversary reminds us that change is possible, even in circumstances where it seems unimaginable. This weekend we also celebrate Pride Shabbat. We can take time on Shabbat to celebrate the many accomplishments of the LGBTQ community in fighting for equality and justice.

We are also happy to present a special new video and prayer for Father''s Day called "A Prayer for Dad." See below for more newly published rituals and prayers.

May this Shabbat offer us some small respite from the pain of the daily news, and a chance to recharge our spirits to create a more just world through love.

Dear Noah,

New Rituals, Many Voices
We are always pleased and surprised to encounter the many ways people are renewing Jewish practice. Take Shabbat, an essential and ancient Jewish practice. Even our oldest practices can be revived, as exemplified by this "Contemporary Shabbat Evening Kiddush," by Rabbi Brant Rosen. And in "Reimagining Candle Lighting in a Time of Climate Crisis," Maggid Andrew Ramer suggests we not light candles on Shabbat. (Blasphemy!, you might be wondering? Or ritual innovation? Take a read and decide.)

In two more examples of recently published prayers that offer very different responses to similar events, Kohenet Ahava Lilith evershYne offers a hopeful healing prayer for our country, while Darcy Grabenstein shares a Kaddish for Our Country, which mourns: "We have lost our compass." Both prayers give voice to the pain and hope many of us are feeling, in different ways.

Dear Noah,

This morning I woke up with debate hangover. Anyone else? I ate my breakfast, turned on the news, turned off the news. As I made my way to the computer to start the work day I thought to myself, "The thing that really gives me hope is the good people I know doing good things in the world." I thought about all the prayers and poems that arrive in my inbox each day, all the comments expressing how people find meaning in our work. This gives me hope.

What we need now more than ever is to share our voices, to listen to one another, to create a better world together. That''s why I''m so looking forward to this Sunday, Oct. 4th, 2:00-4:00pm ET, when we begin the Ritualwell Immersion: "Building a Shelter of Peace: Multifaith Poetry Workshop." Joined by four poets of different religious backgrounds, we will learn, write and share poetry that uplifts and brings us together. Poetry can help us find the words for what is deepest inside us, and help us hear what is deepest inside others. It''s one of the most powerful ways to create meaningful connection and understanding across difference.

Dear Noah,

It''s been a year, as they say. Though 2020 is not quite over yet, we are already thinking ahead to 2021 and how we can look forward to better days. That''s why we created "A Time for Healing, A Time for Hope: Setting Intentions for 2021." In this interactive workshop you''ll be part of a small group led by one of our rabbis from Rabbi Connect. They will provide guidance and a framework for letting go of 2020 and setting intentions for 2021. This event is free, with a suggested donation of $18. Join us!

Even as we look ahead to 2021, I want to linger for a moment on the last night of Hanukkah. This year, Hanukkah went by quickly for me. I was busy and not as present as I would have liked to be. But luckily, Ritualwell is always there with new forms of inspiration to reignite the spiritual fire of Jewish practice. Just yesterday we received a beautiful new Hanukkah song, a "Pandemic Hanukkah" poem, a Hanukkah meditation (inspired by the Piasetzner rebbe) on accessing our soul''s potential, and a blog post on using the Hanukkah candles as a "writing timer"! I hope you''ll linger with these last bits of light before Hanukkah ends.

And finally, we are now launching our end-of-year fundraising campaign. Her writings reveal an astonishing spiritual resilience and a deep and universal love for humanity and for God, even during the darkest times. In this series of online gatherings we will read and discuss Hillesum's writings as a springboard for creating our own writing and spiritual practices.

Here at Ritualwell we create space for the outpourings of our community during times of change and uncertainty. Words can give voice to our greatest hopes and truths, as we see in the newly published "Protest Prayer," by April N. Baskin, diversity coach and outspoken advocate for Jews of color. Words can bear witness and express lament, as in "Say Their Names: A Jewish Prayer for Black Lives Matter," by Maria Pulzetti.

As we draw strength from words of prayer, we are also reminded of the power of ritual to offer a sense of comfort, routine and stability. On Wednesday, June 17th, at 8:00PM ET, we are grateful to host Casper ter Kuile, ministry innovation fellow at Harvard Divinity School, in a free, interactive book talk on The Power of Ritual, based on his forthcoming book of the same name. Casper will share insights from his research and lead a reflective ritual mapping exercise. The event will take place on Zoom, and registration is required. We hope you will join us.

This historical moment we are living through is potent, and some of us may be feeling this on a deeper, unconscious level, though our dream life. Starting June 17th at 1:00PM ET, Rabbi Haviva Ner-David will be leading a Ritualwell Immersion called Dreamwork as a Window to the Soul. Dear Noah,

I have not yet found the words to adequately express the overwhelming grief, outrage and sorrow I have been feeling in response to the murder of George Floyd. I don''t have any new insight to add to the outpourings of my friends, colleagues and the wider community. This latest tragedy is a repetition of so many others; the trope is horrific especially in its predictability. When I first saw the news, my outcry was, "How many more, America? How many more?" In the next few days, the line from Genesis 4:10 came pounding in my head: "What have you done? Your brother's blood cries out to Me from the ground!"

But because the injustice of the casual murder of black people continues to repeat itself, we who are witnesses must continue to repeat ourselves, until we are heard: This ends now. We demand justice. Enough is enough. Black lives matter.

I stand in commitment to fighting injustice along with my colleagues at Reconstructing Judaism: "We must dismantle white supremacy now if we are to have any chance at building a more just and equitable world for all people."

In self-reflection, I know that Ritualwell has a lot of work to do in our small corner of the internet. While we do publish the voices of Jews of color, we strive to publish many more. That requires action on our part to ensure that Jews of color know that Ritualwell is a space where their submissions are encouraged: in protest, in prayer, in poetry, in song, in creative ritual and in all the ways they seek to express their experience and imagine a better world. We stand with you in outrage and will never stop fighting for justice.
